Need Advice from Women Who Have or Have Had Iuds

I had an IUD put in about 4 months ago, a better, safer alternative to getting my tubes ties.... or so i thought. Since then, I have had "cists" on my ovaries over and over and over, almost back to back. I say that in quotations because the doctors assumed that's what my pain was just prescibed pain medicine - which really didn't help. I can barely walk when i get this pain. I've never had anything like this in my life before the IUD. And, on top of that I have bled every day but maybe 10 for the past 12 weeks. My bleeding is heavier when its time for my menstrual cycle, but it never stops all the way. I continuously have to wear a pad and tampon, or i'm in trouble! IUDs are supposed to stop or tremendously slow down bleeding from menstrual cycles. I'm just confused and lost. I went to the OB for my bleeding, and he gave me some medicine to take on a daily basis if i'm bleeding and shouldn't be and want it to stop, called Enjuva, but that hasn't stopped it either. I'm obviously going to go back to the doctor, but I was curious if anyone else has experienced anything similar or might know what's going on? Is all this from my IUD? I didn't have these problems before. That's all i can think that it is. Thanks to all and God bless!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I ended up going to the doctor this past Friday. I think he was trying to eliminate all possibilities before spending the money on running tests. He said the only other thing he could think it might be was that the IUD wasn't sitting in there perfectly straight and it was starting to puncture through the estrogen wall surrounding it and was infected therefore hurting me. He gave me a shot in my hip of strong antibiotics and some meds to up my estrogen to strengthen the wall so it will not go through again. I figured I'd try it, but if this doesn't work, i will have it removed. Just so you all know, the only reason I have not gotten my tubes tied, and i am hesitant to have it taken out, is because we've already had way too many non-planned pregnancies. We always wanted four kids, so it worked out up until the last pregnancy. My husband had a vasectomy, and it came undone. I became prego w/twins. I miscarried one and the other we gave up for adoption. He got a 2nd vasectomy, which of course i don't completely trust now! I had 4 pregnancies in 5 yrs, and my OB said i was not a good candidate for having my tubes tied. My body had been through too much is such a short period and my pregnancies were full of problems and awful! That is why I am hesitant! But not stupid - lol. If I need to get it taken out i will. And i cannot take the pill/shot/patch because I am a smoker. At any rate, i am on the Mirena for those who asked. Thanks to all! I had no idea this was a "normal" thing among so many women. When i go back in 2 weeks, i'm definitely having it taken out if nothing has gotten better. Thanks again! I really appreciate everyone's responses and still welcome more. Ya'll have a great week.

I had the Mirena twice the past 4 years. The first time I had a few problems because it wasn't inserted correctly. It actually started coming out. The second doctor reinserted a new one and I had it in for over a year. I never had problems with heavy bleeding. My period stopped all together. The only negative side effects I had were hormonal. I took it out because my husband and I wanted another child and 4 or 5 months later we were successful. It's been a year since I had the last baby and I'm actually thinking about re-inserting another one.

I have one and I can say it is not all what they put it up to be. I have had mine since Sept 06. And I have more pain then before. I also am very heavy and very regular which I have never been, and it last more than 7 days! I would really be careful and maybe see another Dr. As soon as I can I am going to have mine removed. Good luck.

I read all these responses that say they have NEVER had these. I have had a friend who had the exact side effects you are relaying. She ended up having to get it removed and has not had a problem since. Since she had it removed she has no more cysts. She also had painful intercourse when having it. If you want to chat with me to get more info you can reach me ____@____.com

i have an iud and several friends who have them and i have never heard of this. we all have mirena. im not sure what brand you went with but that is deffinately not normal. i have little to no period what so ever, i have had cysts, unfortunately part of the consequences of not taking a daily hormone (like birth control) that keeps the cysts to a minimum. but all of the women in my family have poly-cystic ovaries anyway. maybe and iud wasnt a great choice for you. im not saying you have to get your tubes tied but i would deffinately suggest talking about other forms of low-hormone birth control with your doctor. lo-estra is a new one on the market.... good luck.

I'd go see a different doctor. Sounds like he doesn't give a damn. I've never heard of such trouble being acceptable. It really depends on the type of IUD you get. If you have the copper (paragard), your flow may be heavier for a while but should regulate. The only way your flow should stop is if you have the one with hormones, which may cause you more problems. It's possible the IUD is not positioned correctly. Go see a good doctor who examines you thoroughly and gives you an ultrasound to check for cysts and positioning of the IUD. You should not have to go through this much trouble. Mine (paragard) has been hassle-free for 4.5 years. Good luck, and take some iron pills for all that blood loss!

Hey J.,

I'm kinda experienceing the same thing ou are going through. What IUD brand did you get? I got the paragard which lasts 12 years and the doctor told me that my periods would be heavier. AND THEY ARE. I bleed for 2 weeks at a time. My pains are soo bad that I have to lay in bed all day. I just got it done in Feb. so when it was time for my period to come I was in so much pain I thought I add a kidney infection or a kidney stone becuase my back was killing me. But then when my period came the pain stopped. So I am not really looking forward to this months friend visit!! The doctors really haven't said anything to me about it just that mine is going to cause that becuase its all copper and it doesn't have any hormones on it to slow down the period. If you find anything else about this could you please let me know? Thanks and I gope you finnd out whats going on. Now about the cysts--when I was younger I had cysts alot on my ovaries and they would burst and that pain in HORRIBLE. I don't know if the iud causes that but if you are getting cysts you really need to get that checked out becuase it can cause damage to your ovaries if the cyst gets to big. SO I would deffinitly talk to your doctor right away.
Hope that helps
A.

I had the IUD put in about seven months ago after having my son, and I too had the same problems that you are having and trust me this month everything has changed it has just miraculously went away no more pain no more bleeding... It is truly a waiting game if you can wait it out you will be in heaven. Your body takes a long time to get used to a foreign object so I would give it a couple more months if I were you.. you will not regret it.

I had an IUD a year before I got pregnant. When I had my cycle, I would bleed for two weeks as if I were hemoraging. My cycle was extremely painful and extremely heavy. I would bleed for two weeks stop for two weeks bleed for two weeks stop for two weeks. I had it removed and everything went back to normal as if I had never had one. I'd recommend having it taken out and use another form of birth control.

I just had my IUD placed at the end of January, because I too did not want to get my tubes tied and I also have 4 children who ar 6,4,2, and 5 months. I haven't had excessive bleeding I have just had spotting everyday for 2 months. The doctor said that it was OK and bleeding regurarly but not to bad was normal up to 60 days after the IUD is placed. You sound like you may have a real problem and if you are not satisfied with what your doctor is telling you get a 2nd opinion.

I have the coppertop IUD, and I love it. I get some pain in the area of the IUD Placement every month around the time of my period, but my periods are about 2-3 days shorter and only a tad heavier than normal. The first few days I had some pain after placement, but it went away. I have not had sex with it in yet because my husband is in Iraq. I hope you get everything taken care of and that must be a nightmare. See a different doctor if you have to, and get that IUD out asap!

Well I had an IUD put in about 2 years ago. I have the same problem with bleeding. As time goes on it gets better, but it is still obnoxious. I thought I wouldn't bleed as much, but sometimes it never seems to end. It isnt usually heavy, put there is enough that I have to have a pantie liner on at all times. I have had some extreme pain at times, but only when it is around the time of month that I should have my "normal" period. I don't get it nearly as much as when I first had it put in, but I too can barely walk. It is something very new to me, as before I had the IUD I had never gotten so much as a minor cramp during or before my period. I would still check with my doctor, but maybe hold out a bit longer until your body gets used to the foreign object. Good Luck and I hope this makes you feel better knowing that you are not alone.

I agree with that last post...You need to see someone else. When you get an IUD put in they warn you about side affects like what you're describin. I had one put in between pregnancies and didn't have a problem and I had the Mirena. There is also the possiblility that your body may be rejecting the IUD and that can lead to VERY serious problems!! It can lead to PID (Pevlic Inflammitory Disease) or other very serious problems like the IUD going thru your uterus(which from what I heard is VERY VERY painful), which can cause you not to be able to have more kids. If you live in the Wilmington, NC area or Brunswick County area try going to Cape Fear OB/GYN. That's mine and there is only 1 male doctor and the other doctors are VERY VERY good. They would do an ultrasound or whatever is needed to help you and if you don't have all the money to pay upfront, they will work with a payment option. I hope this helps out!!

Well, I have never had an IUD and honestly don't know too much about them. However, as you already know, what you've got going on is absolutely not normal. I have learned in my past 10 years of working in several different aspects of the ob-gyn areas and having 2 children myself, doctors can be lazy and do what's easiest to them, instead of trying to truly find out the cause of a problem. That is why we have to go in and tell the doctor what he/she needs to do. When you go back in, tell him/her that they have to find out what's wrong, and whatever it takes is fine. If it's the IUD, then it needs to come out, and maybe that should be a start. I would request and MRI or ultrasound, whatever they would do to see in and find out what's going on. Doctors are great, but again, they sometimes need direction. Look online at some of the information they have on IUDs and the symptoms you're having and inform yourself on it all.
Hope this helps a little. :)

J., i wish i had asked before i did it. same as you this was the other alternative to tieing my tubes so i thought. the docotr said i would bleed for a couple of days but my periods would be shorter and lighter. i bleed for 4 months strait. i kept going back to him because of teh extreme pain. i was given vicoden and he put me on birth control pills to regulate the bleeding. go figure i get the iud and i'm put on birth control pills. it got to the point where they did an ulrasound to see if maybe i was having a tubal pregnancy. after 7 times back and forth to his office and the er i made him remove the iud. i feel better but my periods are stronger than before. i would have it removed asap.

Hey J....I'm not sure what an IUD is made out of but is it possible that you are allergic to what it's made of. Let's say it's made of Latex...my daughter is allergic to Latex. Just a thought.

I know about IUDs from my aunt. Well she bled for a whole year!! She had to get them taken out because of it. She had alot of pain also and it turned out to be endometriosis (?) she eventually had a hystrectomy (?) Yes all your problems are from the IUDs. My aunt never had problems either until she got them. I never got them because of her. Also do not get the Depo shot if you plan for another alternative. It depletes the density in your bones. That I have experienced. But i hope I have helped some with your question. Good luck.

I have three kids and after my second I tried the Depo shot. That messed up my hormones so I tried the IUD for a year and a half. I had all the bleeding problems you are having and so did my best friend who also tried the IUD and she lives in a different state than I do so it's not the doctor. We both ended up having ours removed and both ended up getting pregnant again and both have subsequently decided to bite the bullet and have tubal ligations. I was scared at first, but afterwards I was so glad I decided to go through with it. My relationship with my husband is better too because we don't have to worry about any more babies.

I had mine put in shortly after having my daughter and I had it for a year. I had a full period every two weeks after having my IUD put in. The problem was I having really heavy periods. These were lasting 8 days and I would flood everyone of them with cramps that put me to bed. I was told that it was normal for the first 3 months, then it should pass. Well, it didn't. I became very anemic and had to go on heavy duty iron pills just to keep my iron at a 9. I was also told that I shouldn't feel it, but I did. It hurt, especially when having a bowel movement. I had mine taken out and now I just use condoms. The bleeding leveled out after having it taken out. My husband had his wife again. I hope you have better success than I did.

Hi J., I had the IUD placed about 4 months ago aswell. I had to have my follow up to see how the IUD was doing a couple of weeks back but i been feeling so well that i have been changing my appt. date. At first, i did feel a little cramping and a little spotting but nothing too bad. I was suppost to have had it as soon as i gave birth but i didnt because i was scared about all the complications but finally decided to have it done 4 months later. I dont know if i is because am still breastfeeding or because the IUD but i havent had a period since i gave birth.

I dont know if your bleeding is because of the IUD or not but i dosent sound good. Maybe you should have it removed and try another form of birth control or maybe change your doctor.
