Need a Pediatric Orthopaedist for Scoliosis in Austin for 12 Year Old

The only true fellowship trained pediatric orthopedists in Austin is Central Texas Pediatric Orthopedics and Scoliosis Surgery. The two doctors who have been there the longest are Drs. Shapiro and Williams. (Although a wonderful physician, Dr. Kahn does not treat scoliosis.) They both trained at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas. They are excellent physicians who keep up with all the latest research and techniques on scoliosis treatment. They will not do surgery unless they feel it is necessary. There is another physician there, Dr. Michelle Prince, who also deals with scoliosis, but she has not been in practice that long. Good luck with your search! As a nurse, if my child had scoliosis, I would only use this practice as they are fellowship trained in pediatric orthopedics and that is all they do. I would suggest Dr. Shapiro or Dr. Williams. I do not know who you have seen. For older children, Dr. VonRuden is a possibility.

We have seen Dr. Jay Shapiro for years & have nothing but positive things to say about him. He is located near Dell Children's Hospital.

I'm a 34 year old Mom to two kids who had scoliosis when I was a child. I'd be happy to share my experiences with you. I can tell you that the doctors that I had were WONDERFUL! At the time, I went to Dr. Thomas Lowry who was known all over Austin and the USA for being one of the foremost doctors in scoliois. He trained and worked with another doctor, Dr. Laura Flawn, and they were the docs to see in this area. Since that time, he has retired and she was tragically killed in a car accident. I did see that they had trained some other doctors in this area who opened a clinic in Austin called SpineAustin and that Lowry still does some consultation with them. I've never been there but I sure would give it a try if it was my child, based on my experiences with Dr. Lowry and Dr. Flawn. They were conservative, up to date on latest procedures, and truly remembered that they were dealing with teenage girls. From reading the SpineAustin website, it seems like this is the same case. You can check them out at www.spineaustin.com. I wore a back brace for a year and then had surgery (severe scoliosis) but my brother wore a brace and never had to have surgery.
