Hi Ladies,

I'm moving to Sienna Plantation at the end of June and am need of a pediatrician for my kids. I have a 6 year old, a 3 year old and one on the way. I'm fine with a pediatrician who follows immunization schedules. I'd like one who supports nursing and isn't pushing to introduce cereal at 3 months, reserves the use of anti-biotics for when they are actually needed, and spends more than two minutes with their patients. I'd also like one who is at least somewhat local as I'm going to be looking at frequent visits with a newborn. TIA for any recommendations!

What can I do next?

Thanks for all of your responses! I really appreciate it. I have a call in to Dr. Kahn's office and am awaiting a call back from their new patient coordinator. Thanks again!

Kahn,Gmoser,Atlas- three of them are in one office at Hwy 6 near Murphy Road (1092) -5819 Hwy 6 S. 3rd floor. ###-###-####. We've seen all of them but Gmoser is our main pedi. He's very calm, very understanding, no antibiotics unless warranted- can't say that I have ever disagreed or been unhappy with his advice or recommendations- he seems to get it right. He has three kids himself so he has been there/done that.... I have found Kahn to be very good with the kids but not as good with the parents- but have many friends that love him. (And that just may have been a personailty conflict between the two of us.) Atlas is very nice also- I have just not had a lot of interaction with her beyond her seeing my kids when Gmoser is out. Anyone in the office would be a good choice...

Welcome to Sienna! We've lived here for a little over 2 years now. I LOVE our pediatrician. He has been around this area for over 25 years (a friend of mine had him as a pediatrician when she was a kid) and he is so knowledgeable. I was using a different pedi in the area and switched to Dr. Kahn when I had my son (a year ago tomorrow), so I have been through the newborn stage with him as well and I nursed my son also. They said not to introduce solids until 6 months, so they don't push that kind of thing early either. The girls in the office are great and if you have an issue, you almost always get seen same day. There isn't a time I can remember not getting a same day appointment if I needed one.

Also, just to give you an example of the wealth of knowledge Dr. Kahn has, here is a little story. We went to San Antonio for a vacation and my son got sick and started running a fever of 102, had a cough and was generally miserable. Of course, this was on a Saturday, so I called the answering service and the doctor called me back within 20 minutes. He asked several questions and then recommended that we take him to the ER because he was afraid he might have pneumonia. Now, we were in San Antonio and he didn't just say "take him to the ER". He told us exactly which hospital to go to (a Children's hospital) and what we should tell them, etc. He was so great! Thankfully, my little guy didn't have pneumonia, but he did have RSV which never got diagnosed until we saw Dr. Kahn in his office on Monday.

I have several other stories about how thorough these guys are, but I won't go on and on. I have just been very pleased with them. They are located on Hwy. 6 across the street from the Target in the Capital One building (about 10 minute drive). His name, again, is Dr. Kahn and their number is ###-###-####. He will also do an interview with you if you would like. I did that and was happy with the resources they have with an association to Texas Children's Hospital. Good luck and let us know when you get here and we'll get you plugged in to the women's and mom's Yahoo groups here. They can provide a wealth of info for you.

How funny! I got on to recommend my doctor and see that their office is already recommended here by several others. We have been seeing Dr. Kahn for 8+ years and have been very happy. He is very conservative in the use of antibotics/medicine but knows when a child needs to see a specialist/go to the hospital (we have, unfortunately, had both happen). He does not go "gaga" over the kids (I know some people look for that) but he is still friendly and my kids love him and all his nurses and do not fear going to the doctor. I have not seen any of the other doctors in the practice but have friends who do and they like them too. What I especially like is that I have NEVER had to wait more than an hour for a return phone call (usually much less) and they have ALWAYS worked us in if we need to be seen the same day. And when my children were much younger and calls were more frequent, the nurses were very patient with all my questions--no matter how silly they may have seemed!

BTW, I live nearly in Richmond and drive that far to see him! Good luck!

Dr. Emily Todd - She is at 59 & Williams Trace. I love her!!! She has small children herself so she has been (or is going through) most everything I have gone through with my kids. When my oldest son was 4 he got REALLY sick. I took him to her on a Friday & she called herself on Sat. to check on him & see how he was feeling after having been given shots of antibiotics for the first time in his life. She is about an hour away from where we live in Alvin but she is SO worth it!!

We live very close to Sienna and my son goes to school in Sienna and plays on the Sienna baseball league, welcome to the neighborhood!

I highly reccomend Dr. Laurie Hogarth at Town Center Pediatrics in Sugarland. She is also affiliated with Texas Childrens. She is wonderful, always gives us her full attention and willing to discuss any concerns. She is a proponent of breastfeeding and definitely does not push feeding solids. The important thing is she listens to me and my mom instincts! There office is fairly new, they have a separate sick and well waiting rooms and even a separate room for newborn waiting. The office staff is great and always helpful as well as the nursing staff.

You can read more about Dr. Hogarth here:

Hi B.!

I have lived in Sienna Plantation for 6 years, and I have two small children (3 months and 3 years), and they both see Dr. Dean Gmoser as their pediatrician. He has a good bedside manner with all ages, he is part of a progressive practice, they offer non-preservative flu shots during flu season, and they're close (they're located on the 3rd floor in the Capital One building next to Dairy Queen I believe on Hwy 6 - across from the Kroger/Target shopping centers). There are a lot of women in Sienna who take their children here, but I think you will find several great recommendations from those who live here. Also, send me a message when you arrive in Sienna as there is a wonderful 800+ member women's yahoo group that I'll send you the link to join -it's great for discussing random topics, providing references for anything you can imagine, networking, making friends, etc. There is also a subset of that group called the Sienna Mom's, and they have a forum as well as a Bunco group, both of which I am a member of as well. Would love to have you join us. I work outside the home FT, but for those who stay at home, the Sienna Moms group has already set up play date groups and routine get togethers!! Feel free to contact me directly with any other questions about Sienna, the surrounding area, or anything else!

If you feel like driving to Pearland, Dr. Decker and Dr. Gant at Pearland Pediatrics are wonderful. You will end up waiting for a bit in the office, but they are also great about scheduling newborns first thing in the morning, when the sick kids aren't there. they are VERY supportive of breastfeeding, don't push vitamins (they both agree with me that sun is all that is needed for breastfed babies' vitamin D!), Dr. Decker doesn't push cereal, has never prescribed an antibiotic to my kids at all (they have only had slight sniffles), he even gives literature explaining why they don't prescribe antibiotics unless needed. Once he's in the room, he's yours until you're finished! That's probably why the wait is long, but that seems to be a common thing.

I think Dr. Decker is very good at gauging his patients and their parents. A friend was told at 4 months that "some people start cereal at this age and it is up to you" and when asked said point blank "I don't think she needs it yet." But he knows that I have no intention of starting any solids until 7 months or so, and didn't say a word about cereal at the 4 month visit!

They are very understanding of AP lifestyle, and really let the parent be the parent there. Good luck and welcome!

As several others have said, Dr. Kahn is great. I have a 19 year old that still goes to him. My 14 year loves him, too. My whole family has used him for close to 28 years - you can't go wrong with any of the doctors in the practice, it's just your personal choice. The nurses are great too, espcially Rose! Good luck!

Hi,

The answers in this section were very helpful to me. I am now switching to Dr. Kahn's practice. I moved to Sienna in 2011 and have had a tough time finding a pediatrician for our children. We found one Dr. Dickerson on Sweetwater. The Doctor was nice, but the office staff was not professional. Records were lost, misplaced, insurance information was not verified at the time we made the appointment and overall the back office staff was just so rude we had to find another Pediatrician. We have never been exposed to that and we have been seeing our former pediatrician, before moving for over 10 years.

Thank you for all the information on Dr. Kahn's office.
