Nebulizer

My son (9 months) has had a cough for over a month now and his ped has put him on a nebulizer. After his last appointment yesterday it looks like we will be using one for about 6 more weeks.

We are currently renting one for two weeks and I'm thinking about buying one so I can also have it in the future. As a kid I would have to go to the ped for nebulizer treatments when I would get a bad cough to help them go away.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a brand and/or model to buy?

Also is it worth buying two since we will have to bring one back and forth to daycare everyday?

Thanks

So What Happened?

I called my insurance company and turns out they do cover it with certain vendors... one will be here tomorrow afternoon. When we got one the day after Thanksgiving our local CVS gave us a medical supply company to buy or rent one from in the area, they called our insurance for us and told us it was not covered. What they should have said was that getting it there was not covered! After all of your responses saying insurance covered yours I decided to call my insurance company myself and I'm really glad I did!

Thanks!

I called my insurance company and they paid for it in total -- had to order it through their vendor and had to have a pediatrician's prescription for it. I think the brand was INSPIRATION. Didn't have to pay a CENT. We have an HMO. Just a thought -- I would check with the medical/durable equipment department of your health insurer before paying for one.

The best thing to do, is ask your Pediatrician... for where to buy it, or what brand....
Insurance will probably cover the cost. IF your Doctor recommends one.

Does your baby have asthma????
Does he also have to have an inhaler????
Because he is so young... how is he actually doing the nebulizer????

I know there is also a liquid form of Albuterol.... as well as the inhaler version. My daughter had the liquid form when she was a toddler.

all the best,
Susan

Do you have health insurance coverage? Mine was covered by insurance and we got it for free with a prescription.

Definitely call your insurance company first. They will more than likely cover all or partial for you to purchase this. I think we had to pay like $20 for ours.

We only had one - and just had a bag that we threw it in to transport from daycare to home and vice versa. Just be sure your day care provider remembers to put it back in your bag!!! We got home a few times to realize that we didn't have it packed.

Sounds like everyone has pointed you on the right track. Insurance will pay for most- if not all- of it. Call your pediatricians office and talk to them about it. If the doctor recommends it then they'll contact the insurance office and do all of the paperwork. We took one home from the doctors office the same day, they have them there in stock and we didn't pay a dime!

We had the pediatrician write us a prescription for a portable one and have never had any issues with it. It is smaller than a purse and hardly weighs anything. It plugs into the car cigarette lighter, the elec. outlet with a regular charger, or you can just plug it directly into the outlet. The battery pack is very easy to use and I take it everywhere. I often forget I have it hanging with my purse straps.

It is a Pari. I am adding a link, the yellow and black part is about the size of my hand. It does not hang over the edges when I place in on my hand flat. It is that small. Smaller than an average ladies wallet.

Here is a picture of the battery pack by itself. You know how big the plugs for car cigarette lighters are, this gives a good example of how small it is.

By getting a portable one you can easily carry it back and forth daily. Just hang it up in the classroom where it is out of reach of little hands and then pick it up each day. The carrying bag has a zipper part that is perfect for putting the med vials in.

My youngest has Asthma, the insurance company paid for ours and we got it when she was at the hospital. I would just get 1 and bring it back and forth from day care.

if u have insurance they will cover most of the cost if not all. We had one and this year both kids needed to do it at the same time and it took forever so I asked the ped for a rx for another one and she faxed it to the place who brought it to us the very next day and Ins paid 100 %. L.:)

Definitely worth buying one. However, if you have insurance, that should
cover the cost. If you find it inconvenient to take it back and forth, then
buy another. I did not find it a problem taking it in the AM and back home
later.

I have one, it saves a lot on doctors visits which made the insurance company quite happy. My pediatrician knows I have one so he has me use it on the kids when they get sick or have an asthma attack. I swear it was the best investment ever. Also I got mine from a surgical supply store, the newer ones are much smaller than mine as I was just looking for another one to leave in my car or carry in my backpack (I'm a nursing student).

We got a nebulizer when my son was 11 months. The insurance company had the bassett company from cooperstown bring the nebulizer to our house. The insurance company should pay for it. I would bring the one back and forth to day care. I have to do this when i bring him to the babysitters before i head off to work. Good Luck.

We got our 1st one, 5 years ago, from the pediatricians office and the insurance covered it 100%. That one bit the dust a few weeks ago, and we were given another one. Also covered at 100%.
Talk to your doctors office, they can probably tell you if your insurance will cover it, and how much.
