Nasty Tasting Vitamin Supplement Drops - Are They Really Necesary?

My doctor just recommended that my son take the standard liquid multi-vitamin at his 6 month check-up. no particular reason, he just said that most babies start needing a little something extra at this point. i tried giving my son a dropper full with his meals a couple of time, but he just gags and spits it out and makes hilarious faces like it is the most disgusting thing he has ever tasted - well it is actually. he hates it. anyhow, even though it is kinda cute, i just feel so bad forcing him to take the drops if they are so nasty tasting and it upsets him so much. just wondering what other parents are doing about that if anything? and i guess i was also wondering if it is really necessary to give him a vitamin supplement at this point. he is happy, healthy, and growing like a weed. he is about 80% breastfed, but gets a night time bottle of formula, and formula at the sitter's when she runs out of pumped breast milk, and also eats 1-3 meals of " solid foods " per day depending on his mood.

* thanks for all the responses - i think the doctor reccomended them because of the flouride. apparently portland does not add flouride to the water*

What can I do next?

My son has been taking them for almost 2 months now and he actually seems to like it. He sucks it out of the thing now. To start off with though I put it in his food. I would just mix it in his other foods and he didn't seem to notice. Every once in a while I would give it to him out of the sucker and he is now used to it. I guess I just assume that vitamins are always good for anyone. Whatever they don't need they'll just pee out. Hopefully that is helpful.

Babies get plenty of nutrition from breastmilk, plus he is eating food. He should be doing well as far as nutrition. I don't know why our society is so hyped about vitamin supplements. I think it is because most people eat such bad food. Vitamin enhanced foods are junk foods too. Sugar, sugar, sugar, vitamins and minerals are the ingredients. Yet people think they are healthy foods. It just teaches our children tht sweet junky foods are healthy. If we feed our children breastmilk, they are getting perfect nutrition. When they grow, healthy foods have perfect nutrition. No need to worry about supplements.
It is so simple.
Doctors hardly ever know what they are talking about. Moms usually know best.
Follow your heart and listen to your little guy.

Hi M.,

I am a mother of a ten month old we never give a supplement vitamin to give to our son. All the books that I have read and what our doctor suggested that breast milk/formula and introducing food items is all that babies need at six months. We are into more food items now and less on formula now that our son is ten months old, but extra vitamins are not necessary unless your baby is not gaining enough weight or not getting enough breast milk or formula.

I would suggest stop giving him the vitamin supplement, your son sounds like he is getting a good diet. You can always call your doctor and ask if it really is necesary for your little guy is not enjoying the vitamin:)

Help this helps~

get a second opinion it may be that he needs vitamins but all studies that I have read and heard about say that everyone even little ones do not need vitamin supplements as long as they are getting a well balanced diet with the exception of pregnant and breastfeeding moms in fact the only time our dr. even mentioned vitamins was incase our daughter stopped eating a certain food group like meat or veggies. and then only a 1/2 of a childrens vitamin. but I am not a dr. and I don't know the specifics on your son like is he anemic and he needs the iron. so just talk to another dr and see what they say.

You seem to be in the same situation we where in when my son was 6mo. Breast milk, solids and a little formula. My doctor never said we needed vitimins, so maybe a second doctor's advice might help. As far as your bio, I thought I would tell you about a playgroup that meets in Waldport. Kids from 0-4 go and there are some under the age of a year. We meet MWF at the seashore center from 9:30 to noon. Most show up around 11. The program stops when school stops, but I think we might try to keep it going by meeting elsewhere. You sound like you might fit in, so if you find yourshelf with a lack of something to do ha, ha huh?

I was told to also give my 2 month old multi vitamin drops as well because with living in oregon there is not enough sunlight so there for with breastfed babies I guess they don't get enough vitamin d, but with my last child who is 2 1/2 did just fine without it. I guess the choice is yours. They are always going to say this or that because of some new study but do what you feel is right for you and your child. We have to remember that when our moms had us we were just fine without it.

If YOU take a multi-vitamin and breast feed - that's all he probably needs. That's a back door way to give him the vitamins he needs. Also, Seattle Super Supplements has all kinds of great vitamins for the kids including gummi bear vitamins. Why does he need these?

I can't tell you if it is necessary or not, I can tell you what I decided to do. I decided not to give my daughter the supplement and made an extra effort to try and get her to eat a balanced diet. Now that she is older I buy gummy bear multivitamins from the natural food section in my grocery store. They have less additives and sugar then the other gummy multivitamins. She eats those and enjoys them and then I figure they fill in what she might not get in her diet. I just had to wait until she was old enough to chew solid foods. I hope this helps.

Don't have much experience with kids yet, but I have had to give my dog a liquid that he did not like. I mixed it with peanut butter. Assuming it is ok to be given like that, you could try it. But if he is eating a healthy balanced diet, then I might not be so concerned.

My son has these as well, and I sometimes use them if he's going through a perticular picky eating spell (He's 3.5 BTW). Usually when I give them I mix them in with something he loves. . like peanut butter on crackers (which is too much for your little one obviously) but try to mix it into a stronger tasting food substance. I tasted them once and I nearly gagged, but it's a good suppliment if he's going through a picky stage and I'm not sure if he's eating all his foods.

Though it sounds like your little one is getting everything he needs, so I don't know if I'd even use them. I only use mine if I'm worried about him losing his nutrient values with his regular eating.

i'm sure every other person has told you this lol, but i put it either in their cereal or in her bottle of milk. only milk cuz it masked the taste better than juice or water. there was no way i was going to make her take it plain when i couldn't even stand the smell lol. try that and see if he notices. mine didn't notice at all. good luck!

Our doc told us to give the drops also. Apparently it's mostly for a vitamin D deficiency that we have here in the NW because of the lack of sun... I give them to my son every other day or so. My friend had a baby who choked on the drops, so she stopped altogether. The baby is now a healthy 1 and 1/2 year old. I've always thought that breastmilk has everything a baby needs, but I guess the doctors have to be conservative...

I would say that Yes they are necessary. I put my daughters in her juice or milk. No reason they should have to taste it =) Good luck.

My son takes the same fluid vitamin because it has flouride in it (we have well water). At first he hated it too, I usually mixed it in with his fruit or veggies and he never noticed it all in there. Now(at 17 months) he opens his mouth for it and doesn't mind it all.

My mom kept trying to get me to give those to my son, but he did NOT lke them and I thought they were unnecessary. I never really pushed it and he is just fine. Now he is 3 and I give him chewables that his doctor prescribes because they have extra flouride (they don't put it in the water here in OR- bad, bad!) and he likes them. Plus I give him the chewable vitamin C's from whole foods and he LOVES them and it really gives his immune system a kick. (he hardly EVER gets sick when stuff is going around.) Also, if you are looking for people to kick it with give me a message. Where are you in P-town?
