Names: Love It or Too Weird??

Our second daughter is due in just a couple months...We had the hardest time naming our first, but finally came up with Lilliana Bree, which I love so much! She mostly goes by Lilly, but sometimes we call her LillyBree, and even just LB. For the second we want another longer name that can be shortened - and right now the front runner is Abrielle. Is this too weird? I really like it, but am still having second thoughts, because it seems a little weird to me-Gabrielle, but without the G...Is she going to have to constantly tell people that?? Most likey we'd end up calling her Abby. Also, looking for middle name ideas - kinda leaning towards one that statrs with J, but open to all ideas (except maybe a B name, initials ABC!). Flow is really important to me, it all has to sound good together! And I'm not sure of the flow on any of our middle name ideas yet...Last name is Curry. Thanks in advance for the help!!

So far we've talked about:
Abrielle Jaida
Abrielle Jaden
Abrielle Jayla
Abrielle Jasmine

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for all your input!! This is why we have to ask others opinions, you all have pointed out things DH & family hadn't!! So I guess Jasmines out, someone pointed out the food connection & I hadn't thought of that, even though I just made some curry chicken with jasmine rice a few weeks ago!! XD Anyways, I also honestly hadn't really considered the whole Bree-Brie connection, since we were just planning to use Abby as her main nickname! DH loves the nickname Abby, but Abigail is out! (I hate that name!!) And we don't want to just do Abby, we both like the longer 1st names. So, does anyone have any other suggestions on a less common frilly/fancy longer name that can be shortened? Keeping in line with the Lillliana Bree, LillyBree, LB kinda thing??

Abrielle is going to be mistaken for Gabrielle, without a doubt. She might not mind that, though. She can always be Abby if she likes. Abrielle is an unusual name, so you might want to go with a more classic name in the middle - Jean, Jane.

I don't really like Abrielle. I'd go with Gabrielle. Or just name her Abby or Abigail. She will spend her whole life correcting people who think it's Gabrielle.

Jaden is a boy's name and a girl's name, but more often these days for boys, so I would avoid that. I love Jasmine as a middle name (or a first name).

I also think Abrielle, when written, looks a lot like Lilliana and I would personally want to avoid that. Lots of double L's and it makes me a little dizzy looking at them written together.

I wouldn't choose it myself, but I don't dislike it or find it weird or anything. But be prepared that she WILL go through life correcting people's pronunciation the first time she meets someone (or at Dr's appts, etc).
But the same could be said (pronunciation wise) about Caroline.
(Is it "Carol en" or "Carol INE"?)

It will sound pretty, but she will spend her life correcting people ("No, it's not GAB-ree-elle, it's AB-ree-elle") and correcting spellings and correcting forms when they show up with wrong names. It's your call, of course, but be aware that for the first 18 years you will be correcting others constantly and after that, she will have to do it. I'm just not a fan of names that beg to be misspelled and especially mispronounced constantly. Why not just give her the name Gabrielle, or if you want to ensure she is not called Gabby, just give her the name Abby? It's now accepted as a stand-alone name.

It's an awful lot of syllables and she's going to have a miserable time spelling it out when it comes to writing it all down at school.
(She'll wish her name was Ann or Ivy or Joy - those are easy to spell and fit on name tags).

Are you going for Ay-bree-ell (rhymes with Gabriel) or Au-bree-ell or Au-bree-ell-ah?

Have you considered Aubry?

Aubry Ella (her monogram would be ACE, which is cool!)

Aubry Jasmine would work too

My niece was supposed to be Gabrielle, but all during her pregnancy my SIL and BIL referred to her as Brielle... and it stuck. She's Bryelle Marie and I love that!

If you like Abrielle, go for it. Yes, she will have to spell it and repronounce it forever, but if you are going to call her Abby... problem solved!

It's not horrible but will take some spelling and pronunciation. I do prefer Brielle or aubrey, like others have said. I like jaida, but also spelled jada or jaeda. I also like Jane, Julia, and Jillian. Non j names I like are Anna, Avery, Clara, Eliza, Genevieve (Gen), Olivia, Paige, Peyton, Quinn, regan. And now that I say it out loud, Abrielle Quinn Curry sounds fantastic! My daughters name is Amelia if you like a names, and she's got plenty of nicknames! Mimi, Millie, lia, Mia, may may.

Another post mentioned Ellie as a nickname for Ellington, ellery, Elise, ellison. There's Allie/Ali, short for Alison, alicia. Francesca can be shortened for Frankie or chessie, Genevieve to gen, eve, evie, anneliese to Anna, Anne, liese, lee, Elise, Victoria to Vicki, tori, Annabelle to belle, anna, Anne, Bella, Madeline to maddie, Addie, Lynn.

If you are going to end up calling her Abby, why not go with Abagail?

I think it's a beautiful name, and I don't think it's weird at all. Jaden, to me, though, is a boys names, and I wouldn't use that (not to step on any toes...I just know one Jaden, and he's a boy.) I'm not fond of any of the middle names...just my opinion, I guess. I do like just plain Jade, I like J., and I can't really think of any more middle names.

Look up the Hebrew words for thoughts/words you like and take inspiration there. That's what we did for our second daughter's middle name, and we had a hard time choosing between many beautiful and unique options.

***EDIT*** I LOVE B's suggestion below to make it two names...Aubrey Ella, or even Aubrey Elle (like Elle McP). I think that is an AWESOME name, honestly, and would choose it for my own child if I had another (PLEASE God let me have just one boy!!) I think that's a beautiful rendition and I love it.

The only thing I see is that with that spelling, I think it should be "AH-brielle," like in Aubrey, not a short "a" like in Gabrielle. She will ALWAYS be correcting people because it doesn't sound like it's written. I actually very much like the name with the "ah" sound, and she could still be Abby. I don't like it so much with the short a, which seems like an unnatural pronunciation to me (this could just be my own quirk, though...). Yes, you'll always be saying "like Gabrielle without the G." But if you love the name, it shouldn't matter what we think. I'm just giving you food for thought.

I personally think Abrielle would sound good with a one-syllable middle name. I LOVE Lilliana Bree, so I think something to the same effect would be lovely. Maybe Abrielle Jade?

Good luck.

i like Brielle.. i dont know how that wouldbe for you though because the nickname would be bree .. and your other daughter is lillybree i will say that i have to agree with the others, if you go with Abrielle it sounds better with a simple middle name ..Abrielle Rose maybe?
my other first name suggestions would be.. Arabella, Isabella .. or if you like Abby you could do a hyphinated first name like Abby-Jane (or whatever middle name you were considering) and not have an official middle name.. i have a cousin who is Kristy-Lynn and we were thinking of nameing our daughter something similar but ended up picking a longer first name so it didnt sound right .. i think those hyphinated names are best with 2 shorter names
dont get me wrong i think Abrielle is pretty, and its different i can guarantee you she wont end up in school with 3 others with the same name but i also think that looking at it in print, pronouncing it may be a little confusing to people.. or they may assume its a typo and someone forgot the G

I don't think it's weird, but it can cause issues.
My daughter, age 20, says that I've given her the most difficult name ever and no one ever gets it right. Kirstyn (pronounce Kur-stin). People usually turn it into Kristin. Or Kiersten. or Kris. Whatever. I think it's laziness and rudeness to not listen and pronounce someone's name correctly. My name is Suzanne (Sue-Zan) - not Susan, Sue, Susie - ugh! My daughter has resorted to telling people "It's like Curse Them - Kirs tyn" - ugh! really?

answers from Seattle on

Yep.

As written, following English rules, it would be read:

Ah-breel or Ap-reel (like April with an equatorial accent)

To put the emphasis where you want it doesn't work in English, so it will be a verbal thing. "Like Gabrielle, without the G."

People will catch on fast, it's a beautiful name, but it will be read wrong. So those situations (first days of school, called back to the doctor, etc.) where names are read cold... it will get messed up. Along with about 1/3 of the rest of the class / patient list/ etc.

If *I* were reading her name cold, with the Abrielle, I'd tack a Y sound on the J in Jasmine, just as a heads up (Ah-breel Yaz-meen). Actually, even knowing the correct pronunciation, I'm STILL reading it Ah-breel Yaz-meen. So I'd be a bit leery of the double mistake there.

Huh. It's a syllable thing, apparently Abrielle (correctly) places the emphasis on the second syllable of the middle name. Abrielle Jay-DA, Abrielle Jay-DEN, Abrielle Jay-LA, Abrielle Yas-MEEN or Abrielle Jaz-MIN. NONE of those names should have the emphasis on the second syllable... and placing it on the first syllable "mushes" it in the mouth... so instead of being lyracl, it's ending up 'mushy' or 'mumbly'.

I'd look for a single or triple syllable middle name, like Jane (Jeyne, Jayne, Jayn), Jace, Jet, Jade, ...or... Jericho, Jerika, Jordonna, Jocelyn, Jillian (NOT Jill, too many L's mush it up again), etc.

Yes after you mentioned it, it does just sound like Garbrielle without the G. I wouldn't get the pronunciation wrong though. I think some people might get the A part wrong. As in a long A or short A sound.
It's not really wierd, but I don't love it. I also think it's too similar of a sound with Bree being your other daughter's middle name and you using it along with her first name sometimes. What about Arabelle or Arabella? The only middle name I like is Jasmine out of all those.

I don't know that I mind the name, but I have a suggestion (you can ignore if you'd like). What about putting an 'a' at the end instead of an e?

Abriella

It might add better flow with a middle name, and you could use Ella as a shorter nickname. It's cute and not used as much. You could also use the 'E' with another letter for the cute EJ or another middle name letter.

It's a lot of work to get it just right, isn't it? :)

I like it. Since it's like Gabrielle without the "G", it'll be easy for your daughter to give others a way to spell and remember her name. Like some other posters below, I think the one syllable middle names sound best with a longer first name. I vote for Abrielle Jean. So many Jades and Jaydens already. Jean sounds a little retro and cutting edge at the same time.

years ago when I was in middle school I read a book (and it was an old book when I read it in the 70's) where the two main characters were Abrielle and Emmalina ... I loved both names and if I'd had more girls at least one of those names would have gotten used (Heard/saw the name Kayleigh in high school and fell completely in love).

I'd go with a more simple and/or standard name for a middle name since the first name ISN'T a common name and it's a lot of syllables :)

Edited to add: I had them as Abrielle Lynn and Emmalina Anne :)

Congrats on your new little girl! I personally have this thing about names that have a history as names. They can be super-unusual, from way back in history; I just think they mean more if they're already names.

SO, I would either go with Abigail or just name her Gabrielle and call her Abby. I mean, if you can get the nickname Bill out of William, or Bob out of Robert, or Peg(gy) out of Margaret, or Jack out of John ... then Gabrielle --> Abby makes at least as much sense. I'd recommend:

Abigail Jade
Abigail Jasmine
Gabrielle Jade
Gabrielle Jasmine

Congrats again. Your older daughter's name is beautiful, btw.

I didn't read any of your responses, so sorry if this is redundant.

I don't care for Abrielle. I think she will spend her whole life correcting people on the spelling/pronunciation of her name. There is a girl in my daughter's grade named Abriana (Ah-Bri-Ahna). She is constantly being called different variations of her name such as a long A instead of a short A. I can tell it bugs her.

I think that if you want to call her Abby, you should go with Abigail. People will ALWAYS assume that her full name is Abigail anyway. I have a friend who named her daughter Allie. Just Allie. Everyone thinks it's short for Allison and even try to call her Allison sometimes. My friend regrets the name now.

For a middle name with it, I think Abigail Jane or Abigail Jade sounds nice.

As far as her having to tell people it's said like Gabrielle without the G, my daughter has to do that. I get alot of compliments on Gunnar's name but find myself repeating myself 2 or 3 times when someone asks me what my daughters name is, I guess they don't hear it correctly. Most people realize right off the bat that the names are of Norse origin. But no one really ever asked me how I came up with them. BTW... I love the Jasmine middle name. Yes! Love it and yes, it's weird!! lol!! I love names that are different but just not TOO different. I almost used the name Lily for my daughter's middle name but it just didn't have the right "ring" to it with her first name - Samantha. I actually call her Lily once in awhile just as a joke!!

As for the actual name - this is how I look at it.... She's your child, name her whatever you want in spite of what anyone else says. Well, except your husband, maybe!! BUT, think about your child - will she like it? will she be made fun of? will the initials spell something terrible? will she be able to spell it? will kids in school shorten it to something she/you won't like? (For me, I would have a problem with the LB - in gradeschool some nasty girls would call me that because it was their abbreviation for "little boobs"!!! crazy! sorry, I digress!! lol!!)

Anyways, as for the spelling - I ALWAYS have to spell out my name because people automatically go to the other spelling! It's MarCIA, not MarSHA!!!! And it's also pronounced differently but usually I just let that one go!!

I like the choices you've come up with. I think A Jaden is my favorite. A Jayla has too many L's. lol!!

Good luck!!!
