Well, my son, Logan, was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (an autism spectrum disorder). It is new to us and I am seeking any advice, links to informational websites, support groups in my area (Lake Worth/Ft Worth, Tx), and stories and experiences other mom's may have gone thru with their child. Since he is already 8 y.o. we are getting a late start on treating him. Wondering if it is too late to make a difference in his future? Thanks

What can I do next?

First of all, it is never to late to make a difference in your son's future! I am a social worker and have had experiences dealing with all types of developmental disabilities. The most important thing you can do is educate yourself and your family....There is an organization in Fort Worth called The Arc of Greater Tarrant County- They are located in The Child Study Center in Downtown. They have lots of resources including support groups and links to other organizations. Something else you will want to do is learn about your son's rights in school- The Arc has some great info on this topic. Good luck to you-

Well I have a daughter thats 3 1/2 and right now we are in therpy (SP and OT) and we got evauled by a physcarist and going to the developmental peditirician and she possb. has PDD which is a form of Atusim. She isnt actually diagnosed w/ Atuism persay but she is so behind in many areas that she posses Autsic like things but cant be diagnoased w/ Autisum b/c of the brain bleed she had a birth. She is also going to be evulated for ADHD b/c she is so extremely hyper active its becomming a learning problem now. Im so scared of medicating her at such a young age too. I understand what you are going through and its scary where to start and I have not much clue of what to do. Keep me posted on what you find out and I will do the same. I live in FTW near Fossil CReek and only about 10min from Lake Worth if you ever want to get together and talk about anyting. I dont really have any friends w/ kids and esp ones that have such a severe prob to deal w/ like I do. WEll thanks....hope all goes well for you.Hang in there girl~...C.

iT'S NEVER TOO LATE. MY SON WAS 8 WHEN HE WAS DIAGNOSED. I ALWAYS KNEW THERE WAS SOMETHING THERE. I DECIDED TO KEEP IT REAL. I DID ALL THE RESEARCH AND VISITED ALL THE WEB SIGHTS (STILL DO) AND WELL DID NOT LIKE THE WHOLE DRUG AND TREATMENT THING. SO I DECIDED TO GO THE NATURAL WAY. WE TOOK MY SON TO A ALLERGY SPECIALIST. CHILDREN WITH THIS SYNDROME CAN HAVE ALLERGIES TO FOODS THAT CHANGE THEY'RE MOODS. MY SON WAS ALLERGIC TO OVER 24 FOODS. MY SON LOVED PP&J SANDWICHES AND COULD EAT 10 IF YOU LET HIM. WHEN THE DOCTOR GAVE MY SON THE TEST WE DISCOVERED MY SON WAS ALLERGIC (LEVEL 4+) TO PEANUTS.
WHICH MEANS WE WERE UNKNOWINGLY KILLING HIM.
OUR STORY IS LONG AND IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO WRITE TO ME.
AS FOR WEB SIGHTS, JUST TYPE IN "ASPERGER SYNDROME" AND I'LL TELL YOU, THEY ALL HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT YOU NEED. EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT, SO DO NOT LOOK FOR EXACTS TO MATCH YOUR CHILD. REMEMBER JUST BECAUSE IT'S WRITTEN THAT IT HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE'S CHILD DOES NOT MEAN IT WILL HAPPEN TO YOUR CHILD.
