I was just wondering if any moms out there have any suggestions/recommendations/ideas to help make this an inexpensive project. Kits are definitely not allowed.

Suggestions on paints?

Thank you!

So What Happened?

Sorry Moms! Mission Projects in California. My son is doing his Mission Project on San Juan Capistrano. Since it's down South...we can't go there to visit the church, but maybe in the future. :)

It's a project where the children have to make a replica of the church. My first son was lucky enough to miss this project..and now that my second son is in the 4th grade...this is our first run on this project. Hopefully, we'll be pros at this by the time the 2 little ones get to this project.

I am just running out of ideas....My brain is so fried! At the same time I'm working with my 13 year old with his science project..all due in a couple of weeks! *sigh*

He must be in 4th grade! LOL

I remember back when I did my project, I used sugar cubes to build the mission, and hot glue to glue them all together. I forget what I used for the roof? But it looked great. I did not paint it.

A friend of mine recently had her son build his from Play-Doh (they made the play-doh themselves though, so they could get the color they wanted). She posted pics on Facebook and I thought it looked fantastic, but my friend was SO over it - she said her whole kitchen had play-doh in every crevice, worse than when her son was a toddler.

Yay for the California Missions project - just as much the mom's project as the kid's, huh? ;)

Could you be more specific? I'm sorry, I don't know what a Mission Project is.

One of the cleverest ideas I've seen is using lasagna noodles for the roofing - not sure what kind of paint was used to color them red, but the ruffly edges make a great inexpensive stand-in for the roofing tiles!

when my son had to do the mission project for school - he had the option of building a replica of the mission or creating a diarama - or creating a movie, he had other options besides just building a mission. He chose to make a movie about the founder and it was just a simple movie created by a 9 year old, but it had the information about the mission, it was cute. I got a one rate box from the post office and cut out a hole in it like a tv screen and bought some corbels at Lowe's and some little rubber things to go on top of them, used some butcher paper for him to color the scenes from the movie on, covered the box with shelf paper (I looked for black but couldn't find it so we did it in silver) and used the extra rubber nobs for the corbels and shoved them in the front of the box to look like nobs on a tv. Of course the kids in his class probably had no idea that was supposed to be a tv since they have probably never seen a tv with nobs on it instead of buttons! LOL - but he got 100% on it. He was the only one in his class that didn't do a mission.....

When I first saw the question I assumed it was mission project like helping out a local missionary organization - such as a soup kitchen, or clothing bank - or going in to a nursing home or VA hospital and doing stuff for the older folks.

But now I'm thinking it's a school project to build a model of a mission 150 yrs ago? Since we dont' know if your son is 8 or 14 and beingi a NYer I am of no help!!! I did guide my 11 yr old son in making a pyramid - we use modeling clay and a wooden board and actually created hundred of little blocks that he pieced together following dimension he found online.

Good luck mama!

I still remember when I did this project, we used a cardboard box for the building and painted it, we put elbow pasta for the roof and bagged moss from a craft store, for grass, and little pebbles along the walk way. Just be creative! I got an A+ and almost every one else in my class had used the kits! Look up pictures and then use inexpensive art supplies to replicate it! Good Luck!
