My OB Screwed up - Should I Be More Upset than I Am?

Hi All,

Trying to make this short. I posted last month b/c due to my two pregnancies I am in need of some surgical repair. My bladder will be put back where it belongs :-) My uterus has collapsed and will be removed (we're done having kids and I'm ok with it) and it was thought that I had separated abdominal muscles that would need to be repaired as well. I went for the ct scan for my abdominal condition and it was found that I have a non cancerous tumor that needs to be removed - it is on my ovary and I will probably lose the one ovary as well. Here's my problem with my ob...

3 weeks after I delivered our son (last March/April) I was in the ER at Lutheran b/c of a kidney stone attack. Had them before but not in years and years. The CT they did then showed this tumor but nobody told me about it. My ob was informed - she was the doc I listed and the report went to her office. They talked to her while I was in the ER. The only reason I know this is b/c my internist called me when the recent ct was done and said "I got a copy of your new ct and the tumor is still there"...that's when I asked "what tumor" and she said "this is new info to you? "Your ob has this info at her office."

Soooooooo....I'm just looking for feedback. My internist faxed the new ct with the tumor that is still there to my ob and I've had no call - zip nadda. Would you be upset? Should I be upset?

Thanks for your thoughts.

N.

Yes, I would be VERY UPSET. I might have a conversation with an attorney.

Oh my gosh, N.! I would be furious. I have heard nothing but horror stories about LGH and its physicians associated with it. I would definately have a conversation with an attorney at the very least. I would also call Northwest Women's Consultants in Arlington Heights ###-###-####). They are absolutely wonderful and really dot their i's and cross their t's!

Good luck!

I am so sorry that happened to you! You have every right to be upset with your doctor for not being honest with you and owning up to her mistake. Luckily it sounds like you have not been harmed as the tumor was noncancerous (though it needs to be removed). Even though your doc may have been negligent if you haven't been damaged, a lawyer will not be able to do anything for you. Can't hurt to talk to one if you feel you have been damaged. You should file a complaint with the organization who oversees doctor licensing (not sure who that is). Doctors are human and make mistakes but not apologizing is cowardly, rude and unprofessional!

Hi N.

Yes, you have every right to be upset. I had an OB group give me some test and news unprofessional. I did let them know how upset I was, but they did not seem to care either way. Therefore, I left them and found another OB/GYN. If you would like more info on the doctor I went to - please email back.

On another note - I feel you and I have alot in common. I searching for a part time job too. I have been a stay at home mom for the last 3 1/2 years and very excited to return to work. Your message sounds just like me... I'm not being corny here, but it is nice to hear/see someone in the same boat as myself. I have alot of friends- who are a SAHM and do not have the desire to work right now. Me on the other hand - bouncing off the walls to use my brain in a work setting. I just wanted to say hi and thanks for the posting.

woe! You need to contact a lawyer and get the heck away from this ob and go to someone else who knows what they're doing. S/he had no right keeping that kind of info from you, the patient. I would be livid...

Hey Stranger-

It is good to hear from you but geesh, sounds like you have been struggling quite a bit with health problems. As someone who works in the medical field, I can tell you that I would be very upset with my OB. I can understand that he didn't tell you about the tumor initially. Sometimes papers get crossed (or lost) or Doctors get busy and forget but there is no excuse that he didn't respond when your Internist sent him the documents for a second time. If this were me, I would seek another OB and would not allow him to do surgery on me. It sounds like he is either scattered or just doesn't care, for one reason or another.

I have a FANTASTIC OB that I could refer you to, but he has offices in Elk Grove Village, Bloomingdale, and Arlington Heights. Let me know if you need is information.

Out of curiousity, is this OB out of Lutheran? If so, I would love to get his name.

Take care.
N.

I'm sorry that this happened to you. I would be very upset! You should definately change your ob. Not all doc's at LGH are bad. I've had great experiences with LGH. I'm not sure what your legal options are at this point. I don't know if you can sue her for malpratice.

Best of Luck to you
