Hi Ladies -
So, here's all the gory details.
I had my period 3 weeks ago. My breasts started to hurt quite a bit, my right one more than my left one. Lets see if I can describe it.....my nipples hurt on both breasts if I (or my husband) touch them (or when I am in the shower, or if my kid accidently squishes them, ect). My right one hurts a bit more, not just the nipple but underneath (on the right bottom side) as well. I have no fever, neither breast is hot (which I would attribute to mastitis, and I haven't nursed for 1 1/2 years, no dripping or milk coming out AT ALL). If I am in a bra they don't seem to bother me, it's just when they are free "flying"!
I am on birth control (Ortho Tri cyclen LOW) so I'm not pregnant.
What could it be?
L.

What can I do next?

On the "buy a test in a week" crowd...my son was conceived on BC pills (I'd been taking for 5 years straight without missing a pill), while using condoms with spermicide. He reeeeally wanted to be born.

So, too....eating a lot of soy (esp. edamame beans, darn I love those things), can trigger pregnancy-like DANG that HURT!!!! effects with my breasts.

Cysts or a strained back (go figure, as if hurting your back wasn't enough) or a pinched nerve, or many other medical reasons can cause breast pain. I would personally: wait a week (yeah right, me, I'd buy 2 tests one for now and later, because I'm paranoid), take a test, and then call the doc.

So tough, though. I'm right with you for 2 days straight every time I hog a whole bowl of salted edamame. Mmmmmm. If only they didn't make me hurt.

Ummm... Women have been known to get preggers even on BC. If you are concerned, get yourself checked with the doctor. It could also be a hormone thing... ya never know until you check it out.

At one point I had some strange breast tenderness and weird shooting pains and my doc told me it was hormonal and quite normal. She suggested taking Evening Primrose Oil to help. It took a few weeks, but after I started taking it, it did get better to the point of my forgetting to buy a second bottle. ;)

Also, I know you're on the pill, but are SURE you're not pregnant, nothing's 100%...? It sounds a LOT like what my breasts felt like at the beginning of my pregnancy.

Otherwise, I'd probably say to consult your doc for further evaluation if it doesn't go away soon.

I cannot take birth control pills because my breasts become so sore and tender from cysts that I can't even take a complete cycle. I'm betting the hormones in teh pills are causing this. Is this something that has been steadily getting worse?

Cysts are VERY painful in my experience. The other thing that aggravates my painful breasts is coffee. If I drink more than 2 cups of coffee or Turkish coffee I get painful breasts. With Turkish Coffee, it's horrible.

Could just be hormonal levels changing. Even though you are on birth control, you might want to double check with a pregnancy test to make sure that that 0.99% didn't slip through.

Since they don't hurt when you are wearing a bra, it may be that their weight is pulling on them and making them a little sore when they are free. I have had a problem with my breast aching off and on when I spend too much time out of a bra. Especially if I go without a support bra at night when I am sleeping for too long.

I had this happen (my youngest was 12 yrs old) and it turned out to be a cyst (triggered by hormones) causing anywhere from tenderness to stabbing pain, especially in the week before my period. The doctor checked it out and suggested treating it like mastitis - massage it in a hot shower. He said if it got bad, he could try to aspirate it. If you haven't had a physical exam or mammogram lately, this sounds like the time to get checked out.
