Music That Makes You Feel Strong

This is kind of stupid, but I just started running again after my third baby armed with an MP3 player for the first time (woohoo!!!). I put music on that I thought was upbeat and would be motivating and find myself skipping a lot of songs and only listening to a few specific ones. I've noticed that certain songs make me feel stronger, and they are the same songs I listen to on my commute that make me want to stop my car and go for a run. Interestingly (or not) they are all female rock/metal musicians.

It made me wonder if, when it comes to pushing ourselves for workouts, hearing strong-sounding female voices inspires us to push harder and want to be fit and strong, whereas a male voice is just a male voice. There is one song I LOVE that makes me run harder by Devin Townsend, but there are female back-up vocals on it.

What do you all tend to listen to and find yourselves pushing harder to? Does anyone else notice this or just listen to anything at all?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for sharing. The funny thing is I don't like very many female vocalists (no offense, but Lady Gaga scares me!). I like a lot of classic rock, metal, and a lot more music that I would not work out to (classic, chant, etc.), but lately find Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation have been great for running. I think it's the female vocals. :)

Melanie--that is awesome!! I'm just putzing away at my mile and a half or so. I never ran distance when I was younger so feel good if I even finish something as short as a mile or so--marathons are definitely not on my horizon! :)

Here is a great website I found while training for the 2 marathons I ran earlier this year. You can choose songs by pace/genre/etc (I did the 26 mile runs at about a 9 min pace, so I used that for my guide). When I do shorter/faster runs, I use something around an 8 min pace.

Hope this helps: http://jog.fm/. Good luck with the running. I started up after my daughter was 6 months (she will be 3yo next week) and since I have run 2 marathons, 3 1/2 marathons and am training for 2 more 1/2 marathons this fall and winter.

I usually listen to T.I. (my fave rapper) or Lil Wayne (the music I like of Lil Wayne anyways). I like to listen to rap when I workout, a lot of it seems to be getting out of the hood and making it or I've made it and I'm awesome type raps. I like to listen to Kris Allen live like your dying and Chiodosn or Hawthorne Heights when I work out and I'm in a rock-out mood.

I don't think I listen to many females when I work out unless I'm working out because I'm really mad, then I'll listen to stuff like Ashanti "Freedom".

It does matter what music is in my iPod! I like a steady beat, about the same speed as my pace (not too fast!) but it can be female or male. Sometimes I buy a couple new songs, and they just aren't right once I'm running, and sometimes they are just what I need to keep moving!

Hmm, I find the songs that get me going the most are the most rockin' ones, or the ones with the killer beats. I have actually created a playlist on my ipod called "work out" for that very purpose. I'm not sure what your taste is but here's what currently gets me pumped up the most:
classic rock: van halen, def leppard, kinks, who, foreigner, queen
80's: prince, madonna, cure, police, U2, new order, beastie boys
more recent: green day, foo fighters, killers, cake
oh, and SHOW tunes, like wicked, hairspray and phantom of the opera (I may be a rocker but I am a gleek too!)
As far as strong female voices I love Annie Lennox, Tina Turner, Pat Benatar, Heart and Beyonce
I'm sure I'm leaving something out but this is what comes to mind at the moment :)

I was thinking tonight as I heard that new Lady Gaga song "Edge of Glory" that I'd love to run to that. Other songs that make me feel like running:

"Dog Days are Over" by Florence and the Machines
"Telephone" by Beyonce and Lady Gaga
"I Got a Feeling" by Black Eyed Peas
"Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J
"Zombie" by The Cranberries
"Raise Your Glass" by Pink

So yep, I'm with you on hearing a strong, funky woman belt out fast song to get me going - the LL Cool J song is an exception from way back I guess.

So what do you like?

I listen to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on my NOOK or just sing to myself since I don't have an IPod or MP3 player or anything like that. However, I prefer rock with a male voice. Elton John, Rascall Flatts, Green Day, Phil Collins.

I've been listening to the Hard Candy CD by Madonna. My daughter got me into Avril Lavigne. Also Black Eyed Peas. I never noticed it, but I guess I listen more to females than males while working out.
