Mother Worried About Possible Allergies (Skin Redness That Come and Go)

Hi moms,

I'm a little worry because my 19th months daughter began showing up some marks since labor day's weekend. This red marks come and go within minutes (20-30 approx) that is why it has been difficult for her pediatrician to see them. Some days the marks look just like mosquito bites (without bumping up of the skin) and other days it could be like a thick up-raising scratch. The marks are not itchy, don't swallow, and my daughter is feeling well (no fever, playing around and eating well). And they can appear in the cheeks or arms or legs during the same day.

She has never had any food allergy and so far has not try any different food that could be considered the cause of it. If anyone has gone through something similar please let me know. Any advice will be thankful.

I start each day thinking the mark will not show up and sleep at night with question in my head. Should I take her to an allergy doctor? Is she to little to see an specialist? Would the marks simply just go away on its own?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your help and responses, they really help me guiding me in what steps I needed to make.

What my princess has are Hives. According to her doctor, who was able to see them when we went in for a consultation, the 70 % of the time they can not know the reason that originates them. She prescript some medication for 3 to 4 days, if they still appear repeat the medication after a week. So far they almost gone.

What I figure out is when my daughter is outside is when the hives appear. The doctor told me that probably something in the air (such as bacteria or viruses) or just the change of season could be the reason for their appearance. The good thing is that it was nothing to worried about and not contagious, with the medication she's almost back to normal.

Again thanks to everyone for all your comments.

When do they show up? All of my kids get red on their faces if certain foods get on thier face. Ranch Dressing is the biggest one we have noticed. As long as it is wiped off, it goes away fairly quickly, and it is nothing to worry about =)

Hi T.,
Sometimes we use things that over time can cause results like negative results. We don't suspect it because we've "always used it."

For instance, if you look at the back of most Johnson & Johnson Baby products or even Gerber Grins & Giggles, you'll find there's a chemical called Quarternium-15. Q-15 is formaldehyde [embalming fluid] and it's found in many personal care products. If you google it or simpely go to http://dermnetnz.org/dermatitis/quaternium-allergy.html take a look that the effects this chemical can have on someone's skin. If you visit www.walgreens.com, and do a search for this chemical, you'll also find approx. 10 pages of commonly used products that contain this known toxic chemical.

If you have some free time, I'd like to share more with you that may be helpful to you and your little princess. We can certainly do this ove the phone or at a local coffee shop. Part of my business in wellness is making people aware of commonly used things that are contributing factors to many illnesses and conditions we face.

That happended to my son. one day he woke from a nap and I was changing his diaper I noticed something that looked like spider or misquito bites. I was very worried so I called his doctor and explained the rash. She said it sounded like hives, and to just give him a bath if I saw them again. I did see them for a few days (less and less each day) and it always disappeared quickly. Although I never found the cause, I have not seen them before or since, and its been 7 months. So I would just check with the doctor to rule out anything else.

I was thinking eczema also, my 3 year olds eczema showed up closer to birth. Here is something to consider. Where are the marks? What type of toys does she play with prior to the marks showing up? What does she eat prior to the marks? My three year old began getting red rashes and welts about a year ago. It turned out to be a Nickel Allergy. If the pediatrician cannot figure it out, yes, take him to a specialist. My sister could not figure out what was wrong with her infant son with stomach and skin problems, it turned out he was allergic to wheat, which he was getting from breast milk.

My son had something simular he would have a fever. For instance the fever would occur on a monday and the redness would show up on Friday. He would not be in pain, but it pained me to see him that way.

Another thing you could check is the dyes in the food. My husband was allergic to a type of dye when he was younger with the same symptoms.

I hope this helps a little.

Sounds like Nickle allergy or eczama. Allergies are bad right now, I would take her to see a specialtist, it would hurt. If her skin feels rough I will guess eczama.
Good luck.

Hi T.,
My daughter had reactions to her soap and lotion. We use Berts Bee's (you can purchase at CVS). Soap, shampoo and lotion contain a lot of irritating things to the skin. Like mineral oil, alchol, laureth, I would change this first to rule out any irritation. My friend son had a bad reaction to his soap and once she changed it, it went away.

Good luck

My daughter has had strange red marks since birth she even reacted to snow when it got on her skin she got huge hives. So we did the allergist and he tested her for everything and she has a few allergies but nothing major but he said some people can react with a type of hive when the wind blows and that is exactly what I have found to be true for her, some days she just wakes up all blotchy and red and others she is fine. I do watch what I wash her clothes with nothing that has alot of perfume. One thing that I found made her worse was grape tylenol I can give her childrens motrin and nothing happens. So maybe first start a journal and each day start out writing how she woke up and then just log how the day goes and what she has eaten and done keep that for a couple weeks and see if you can find a pattern to it. Then if not I would say go to an allergist.
Alan Resnick MD ###-###-#### is the allergist I have taken all my children too He is the top childrens allergist at Childrens hospital in Chicago

You don't say how quickly it comes and goes but I was wondering if it could be eczema. My son has it and some days there is nothing, other days some dry patches and other times red bumps or patches. It isn't itchy and doesn't bother him. His pediatrician diagnosed it. The best thing we found to prevent it is Aveeno bath stuff & lotion.

I would take your child to a dermatologist. It sounds like something I have and it is a skin bacteria that will come and go. Mine came more when I was warm or sweated more. You will see this in areas that do not get that much air flow as well. Mine came and went and I barely had the rash and my dermatologist knew right away what it was. It was nothing to worry about and he prescribed me some cream. Thanks, T.
