Morning Sickness Help - Mequon,WI

I am about 6 weeks pregnant and have had a little morning sickness here and there and smells are starting to get to me at time. All in all not bad. With my last pregnancy I had horrible morning sickness for 5 months. I found a few ways to deal with it but still had to take a leave from work. I have a 22 month old son so there is no break for me with this pregnancy. I've found myself being really anxious about the morning sickness being like the last pregnancy and how I would deal with it if it got that bad having to take care of a little one. If anyone has any advice on what worked to help with the morning sickness or if you had bad morning sickness with the first and not the second, I would really appreciate it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! The morning sickness did start to kick in pretty bad the last 2 weeks. Strangely the things that helped with my last pregnancy are not for this one. I have tried the ginger tablets, ginger soda, various food combinations and nothing seemed to be working until I tried the ginger water. I used to make cucumber, lemon and ginger water all the time, I don't know why I didn't think to try that on my own. So I made a batch of that water using bottled water today and I feel almost normal (fingers crossed). If it comes back or gets worse I am going try the acupuncture (which I love to do anyway) and if that doesn't help I'll ask for help from my doctor. I don't like taking medication for anything, let alone while I am pregnant but I can't curl up on the couch and not leave the house for 5 months like I did with my first pregnancy;) Thanks again!

Hi L. and congrats on the pregnancy!

I would try to stay off prescription meds as much as posible as they do impact fetal development. I know sometimes that's the easy answer but it's not always the best answer. Try this, keep a bag of crackers next to your bed. Eat three or four in the morning before you even sit up in the morning. Trying something warm to drink in the morning rather than cold will help also. I would also go to a local co-op and buy some ginger capsules or you can even buy ginger chews. Ginger, if taken in adequate doses, is a great calmer of nausea. The other thing you can do is to eat small meals and snacks throughout the day. You don't want your blood sugar levels to drop and cause stomach upset. I would also try to avoid foods high in sugar, they tend to upset our digestive system as well. They also sell motion sickness wristbands at your local Walgreens, they use acupressure to reduce nausea. I found those helped quite a bit.

I'm a mom of three and a nurse, if you want more help please feel free to send me a note.

I had morning sickness, all day long, with both of my pregnancies. I didn't try to tolerate it for a minute! I had my doctor give me a prescription for Zofran the first pregnancy and the second pregnancy I used the generic version which worked just as well and both are safe for the baby. There's no need to suffer - especially with a toddler at home.

I was so nauseous that was unable to eat anything even water but after continuous use of no to morning sickness tea I am much better. It was the lifesaver for me.

I know its hard to deal with being sick especially when you have to take care of a little one. I have 3 kids and had morning sickness with each. My first 2 are 19 months apart so I can completely relate to your situation. There were a few things that helped. I always tried to keep something in my stomach. Crackers helped and ginger ale somewhat helped. Try to get rest. Your husband should be able to help out with this whenever possible. I also took some prescription meds from my Dr. I can't remember the names right now, but they did help somewhat.

One thing to keep in mind. This is your bodies response to growing a baby. I had 3 healthy kids and pregnancies and the sickness was over by 16 or 17 weeks. Its only temporary and in no time you'll be moving on to other uncomfortable things like moving around and heartburn and eventually the beautiful bundle you are working so hard to grow.

Hang in there and do your best to get through it.

I had the same trouble with both my pregnancies and what worked for me was to eat half a bagel loaded with peanut butter right away in the morning (in bed if possible!) then continue to nibble all day - on anything you can handle, malts and shakes were a lifesaver too. Keep suckers and candies on hand everywhere. I handled it all better the second time around, mind over matter? I knew it would end (even if it lasted 4-5 months!) and that I would have something so awesome in the end. Good Luck and congrats!

Congratulations on your new bun. All of the advice here is good. I will just add, sometimes it helps to set an alarm in the middle of the night to get up and have a really lite snack. Many times your tummy gets empty and this triggers nausea. Eat anything that sounds good. Stay away from the fatty stuff as the fatty and greasy foods. This is harder on your sysytem and makes your gallbladder go into overload and can trigger gas and nausea. Seabands as one of the posters mentioned is also a thing that many times can work. Do try the crackers by the bed. Eat 2 of these in the AM before your head leaves the pillow. Also small meals every 2 hrs or so is very helpful. Now if you find yourself loosing weight, unable to keep anything down for 2 days or have not urinated for 16 hours, then you do need to contact the doctor and get some medication. They can start with something as basic as OTC Unisom, if that does not work, move to Reglan all before bringing out the big guns and go to Zofran. Now I had such bad hperemisis that I lost 42 pounnds and HAD TO go to Zofran. (Zero nutrients sure are far worst than that drug will do!) Just to let you know, I even had to take IV doses and I have wonderful little muffins.... Congratulations again.

L., congrats on the baby on the way and sorry you arent feeling well. I would talk to your doc and ask for meds. I had horrible nausea/vomitting the entire time with all of my pregnancies. It isnt worth suffering, especially with another child to take care of. Talk to your doc about med choices, it will help big time. Also, relax, every pregnancy is different and it may not be as bad this time. Think positive. :) If it get really bad and you need someone to talk to who can understand, feel free to email me. Good luck.

I'm surprised that someone else hasn't already suggested acupuncture! I tried it with my second and wish I would have done it with my first. It worked great and was relatively painless. I went to a chiropractor in Uptown once or twice per week for a few weeks. It was a lifesaver. If you want more info, e-mail me and I'll send you his name and number. Otherwise just Google for "acupuncture morning sickness minneapolis". You should get some results from that. Good luck!

Congratulations! I'm in a similar situation. My daughter is 21 months and we're due in March, I also work part time (in a coffee shop--talk about inopportune smells). My morning sickness was all day the first time around, and this time it has been much worse and I was losing weight. The doctor put me on generic zofran and it's been a lifesaver!! I could actually get up and make lunch for my daughter, can take her to the park (for a short bit of time) and just generally function pretty well most of the time. It certainly doesn't make you feel 100% all the time, but any improvement is great when it's so bad! If it starts to get bad I highly recommend talking to your doctor about medication. It was offered to me the first time, too, but I don't like medicine; with a little one to take care of I saw no alternative this time. Good luck and hopefully you won't have to worry about it!

Hi there!

Congrats on the baby!!

I had morning sickness SUPER bad with my first. I tried everything...the crackers, B6, all the herbal teas. You name it! I threw up non-stop and violently for the duration of the pregnancy no matter what. I found that eating bananas helped me though. Maybe explains now though why my son is so big as he is today...he is always TOP of his height percentile! The wrist bands also did seem to take the edge off...though I tended to only wear them at night as they look kind of dorky. I threw up so much that they also started talking that I may need to be hospitalized..or at least wanted to put me on Zofran. But I just didn't like the idea of meds with a developing fetus too. So, I then resorted to salty chips with Kool-Aid. Back then someone told me there's something about combinging salt with sweet that fixes the nausea form morning sickness. It actually worked. But you have to watch how much you eat of this stuff...obviously tends to pack on the pounds! Plus too much salt is not good.

Second child, I had morning sickness again. Maybe not quite as bad?? But still bad enough...and it also lasted the duration and was super bad too. The month before my due date...it finally let up. 'Let Up' is the operative word. Watermelon worked like a charm for some reason... But you have to be careful as that stuff has lots of sugar and can send you easily into Gestational Diabetes too. So, I discovered Ginger. That works really good. I'd just get fresh Ginger and cut up thin slices of it into my water bottle (pregnant Moms always seem to have water around). You can peel Ginger fairly easily by using the back of a spoon...much like you would using a regular peeler (note: regular peelers do NOT work as good).

Best of Luck!
Renee

Hi, congrats! My first pregnancy I too had morning sickness all day long for the first 5 1/2 months. My second pregnancy I started out the same way but I found something that works wonders! At bedtime, take 1/2 of a Unisom tablet and 1/2 of a B6 vitamin...I didn't have any morning sickness after I tried it! Of course I ok-ed it with my Dr. and she said it was fine.. The combination of them is what does the trick... I tried them both seperately with my first pregnancy (both recommended by my dr...) the B6 made me even sicker and the Unisom helped a little but didn't take it completely away like the combo of the two does. I've been telling everyone I know about this, I wish I would've known the first time around!! Best wishes!

I, too, had violent morning sickness for 5 months with my first pregnancy. Vomited so forcefully that I broke a blood vessel in my eye. My second pregnancy I had maybe 4 days of morning sickness, only vomited once. Each pregnancy is different. I hope all goes well with you!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I understand where you're coming from. I am just over 15 wks pregnant with a 2 yr old and still having morning sickness. I've tried a lot of things that did not work. Sour things actually seem to help me a little (like sour candies), but not a whole lot. My doctor finally gave me a prescription since I was losing weight. It has helped, but if I don't take it all the time, I get sick again. I'm not a big fan of being on medication, but if you do get really sick, it might be worth it to ask your doctor if they'll prescribe something. It can be such a relief to be able to eat and not feel nauseous all the time, especially when taking care of a little one! Good luck!

Hi! Congrats on Baby #2. My son will be 2 in October, and my 2nd is due in October; so I know what you mean about no breaks! My sickness was worse with the 2nd, and for a while the only thing that got me through the day was hard candy. Get some that you like, but isn't your favorite -- I don't like the ones I had then:) Ginger tea helped some. Eat anything that doesn't sound repulsive -- I ate cookie dough pop tarts, even though I don't even normally like them. Pretzels helped. Once I could stand it, peanut butter toast helped. Eat a snack before bed if you can. And don't feel bad about going to bed when your toddler does -- lack of sleep makes morning sickness worse.

Good luck! It can be a hard time, and you'll get through it:) Hopefully you're like some of the other ladies and it will not be as bad with your 2nd!
