Intolerable Nausea and Sickness All Day During Pregnancy- Medication?
I recently found out that I am pregnant with our 3rd child. Again, the extreme nausea all day long and just feeling sick has set in. The only time I seem to feel well is for a few hours during the night when I am asleep. After suffering through 2 pregnancies with similar symptoms for almost the entire nine months, I am considering requesting medication to help me through this time. But I want something safe, as I usually don't take anything at all during a pregnancy.
Have any of you had such symptoms throughout your pregnancy and then found relief from medication, over-the-counter or prescription? If so, please let me know what you took so that I can be informed and ready to request something when I go to the OB/GYN. Thank you!

E.,
I take vitamin B6 and 1/2 a Unisom tablet at night. This has been a lifesaver for me, and was recommended by my ob/gyn. I am 19 weeks, and I have tried to stop the medication occasionally just to see if I still got sick. Usually, by noon the next day, I am vomiting and unable to continue at work. So, the ob.gyn said to just keep taking it as long as I need to and that it's safe. The doctor did give me a prescription for Zophran (sp?) but I haven't had to have it filled since the unisom and B6 are working for me. Sometimes I still don't feel great, but I can at least function. I think it's definitely worth asking about...

You do have options you can discuss including, B Vitamins, ginger capsules 250 mg 3 time per day try sprouts or sunflower market and whole foods (have to take a few days before they help) motion sickness wrist bands. Ginger tea is not rec. I wrote a book chapter including this but have lent it out for all of the details. Get some help! I have 3 kids and understand you can't be sick and be a parent. My babysitter had great success with ginger capsules. Good Luck,

I would say Zofran is the most popular and seems to work for anyone I know. I must be so hard feeling so sick and taking care of two kids. Call your doctor asap. I hope you start feeling better really soon : ).

Hi E.,
During my first pregnancy I was horribly sick throughout the whole pregnancy. My dr. had me first try the same old stuff...ginger, eat crackers first thing, sea sickness bands. None of it worked and I lost a good amount of weight. Around 9-10 weeks I was given Phenergan. Wow...huge difference. I could actually eat! It can make some people drowzy or tired, so you will have to watch out for that. My sister couldn't handle it and was given Zofran during her pregnancy. It worked wonders for her. I've used Phenergan for two pregnancies now and she used Zofran for her two pregnancies, and we are both so thankful. Talk to your doctor about your options. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,
I suffered through my first pregnancy and was so, so sick. I was just so miserable from the constant vomiting and nausea. I told my husband I couldn't have another baby without relief this time--my body just couldn't handle it. I'm 12 weeks pregnant with number 2 and am taking Zofran this time. I was a drug designed for people suffering from nausea from chemo. It is VERY expensive, even the generic version, so ideally you would have good insurance, but if not it might be worth it anyway. It also can make you EXTREMELY constipated so either use stool softeners or prune juice immediately if you start taking this drug...trust me! This medicine makes life bearable for me (not much more than bearable I'm afraid). Instead of absolutely nothing helping my nausea I'm now like a "normal" pregnant woman who eats some pretzels and finds temporary relief or lays down and get a little relief. For some people this is a miracle drug that takes away all their symptoms--it's not that good for me, but it does help a lot (I realized this when I was a couple hours late taking a second dose and got violently ill). There are other drugs but they have the awful side effect of basically making you fall fast asleep (not an option with little ones). I've done a lot of research on the drug, I wish there were more test on outcomes for pregnant women and our babies, but ultimately what I've read about it makes me believe that it is better than the alternative, at least for me. Good luck, I've never felt more horrible than when I'm pregnant. I always wanted to be one of those happy, glowy pregnant women, but instead am a vomiting mess who ends up a lot skinnier than when I started...I know how awful this is for you!

Ask about vitamin B. It helps some women with nausea during pregnancy.

I haven't had the horrible sickness that you have, but I definitely think you should ask if there is something that can help ease your symptoms. You will have a much more enjoyable pregnancy and your kids will have a much happier mama if you can be on something to make you feel better. Sorry this probably didn't help much!
