Intolerable Nausea and Sickness All Day During Pregnancy- Medication?

I recently found out that I am pregnant with our 3rd child. Again, the extreme nausea all day long and just feeling sick has set in. The only time I seem to feel well is for a few hours during the night when I am asleep. After suffering through 2 pregnancies with similar symptoms for almost the entire nine months, I am considering requesting medication to help me through this time. But I want something safe, as I usually don't take anything at all during a pregnancy.

Have any of you had such symptoms throughout your pregnancy and then found relief from medication, over-the-counter or prescription? If so, please let me know what you took so that I can be informed and ready to request something when I go to the OB/GYN. Thank you!

What can I do next?

E.,
I take vitamin B6 and 1/2 a Unisom tablet at night. This has been a lifesaver for me, and was recommended by my ob/gyn. I am 19 weeks, and I have tried to stop the medication occasionally just to see if I still got sick. Usually, by noon the next day, I am vomiting and unable to continue at work. So, the ob.gyn said to just keep taking it as long as I need to and that it's safe. The doctor did give me a prescription for Zophran (sp?) but I haven't had to have it filled since the unisom and B6 are working for me. Sometimes I still don't feel great, but I can at least function. I think it's definitely worth asking about...

You do have options you can discuss including, B Vitamins, ginger capsules 250 mg 3 time per day try sprouts or sunflower market and whole foods (have to take a few days before they help) motion sickness wrist bands. Ginger tea is not rec. I wrote a book chapter including this but have lent it out for all of the details. Get some help! I have 3 kids and understand you can't be sick and be a parent. My babysitter had great success with ginger capsules. Good Luck,

I would say Zofran is the most popular and seems to work for anyone I know. I must be so hard feeling so sick and taking care of two kids. Call your doctor asap. I hope you start feeling better really soon : ).

Hi E.,
During my first pregnancy I was horribly sick throughout the whole pregnancy. My dr. had me first try the same old stuff...ginger, eat crackers first thing, sea sickness bands. None of it worked and I lost a good amount of weight. Around 9-10 weeks I was given Phenergan. Wow...huge difference. I could actually eat! It can make some people drowzy or tired, so you will have to watch out for that. My sister couldn't handle it and was given Zofran during her pregnancy. It worked wonders for her. I've used Phenergan for two pregnancies now and she used Zofran for her two pregnancies, and we are both so thankful. Talk to your doctor about your options. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,

I suffered through my first pregnancy and was so, so sick. I was just so miserable from the constant vomiting and nausea. I told my husband I couldn't have another baby without relief this time--my body just couldn't handle it. I'm 12 weeks pregnant with number 2 and am taking Zofran this time. I was a drug designed for people suffering from nausea from chemo. It is VERY expensive, even the generic version, so ideally you would have good insurance, but if not it might be worth it anyway. It also can make you EXTREMELY constipated so either use stool softeners or prune juice immediately if you start taking this drug...trust me! This medicine makes life bearable for me (not much more than bearable I'm afraid). Instead of absolutely nothing helping my nausea I'm now like a "normal" pregnant woman who eats some pretzels and finds temporary relief or lays down and get a little relief. For some people this is a miracle drug that takes away all their symptoms--it's not that good for me, but it does help a lot (I realized this when I was a couple hours late taking a second dose and got violently ill). There are other drugs but they have the awful side effect of basically making you fall fast asleep (not an option with little ones). I've done a lot of research on the drug, I wish there were more test on outcomes for pregnant women and our babies, but ultimately what I've read about it makes me believe that it is better than the alternative, at least for me. Good luck, I've never felt more horrible than when I'm pregnant. I always wanted to be one of those happy, glowy pregnant women, but instead am a vomiting mess who ends up a lot skinnier than when I started...I know how awful this is for you!

I haven't had the horrible sickness that you have, but I definitely think you should ask if there is something that can help ease your symptoms. You will have a much more enjoyable pregnancy and your kids will have a much happier mama if you can be on something to make you feel better. Sorry this probably didn't help much!

Ask about vitamin B. It helps some women with nausea during pregnancy.

E. - I have been where you are!!! The medication you are looking for is Zofran. It is the safest of all anti-nausea meds. Be prepared to fight for it with your insurance company, as insurance can sometimes not want to pay for it.

Feel free to check out my morning sickness blog:

www.whiningpuker.blogspot.com

It's my personal blog now, but it was started as a compilation of morning sickness research, and some of the side tabs might be helpful to you. Specifically, try the forums at www.helpher.org.

I also used an over-the-counter combination of Unisom (doxylamine succinate) and B-complex vitamin.

Blessings, and feel free to contact me! Congratulations on the coming of your newest little one!

I feel for you!! I had hyperemisis gravidirum with my first and was throwing up even water for 7 months. They put me on Zofran and it finally went away and I finally kept food down (I lost 13 lbs in my first trimester and was in the hospital 3 times). I just had my second child in December and that pregnancy was MUCH better but I did have nausea all day throughout the entire pregnancy. Not so much vommitting and no hospital stays but I was put on omerprazole (spelling?) which is the generic for Zofran (there was not a generic available during my 1st pregnancy) and I took that on and off when it got bad so that it would not get to such a severe stage. These are prescription only and my OBGYN told me that nausea lasting after week 15 is a digestive issue and heartburn medicine would be relief. I took Prevacid and it helped somewhat.

Hi,

Let me just say that I can't imagine what you feel like. I have 3 children now and my pregnancies went pretty well. I felt sick a little bit with my second child and I requested Zofran (it's the best medication for nausea in my opition) and it works great. It's very safe and used widely. I'm a nurse myself and we use it all the time even with small children. I definitely feel like you, I hardly take any meds, but why suffer your entire pregnancy if you can help yourself and actually enjoy your pregnancy. Hope it helps and good luck.

Congrats on your pregnancy! I also had terrible nausea with my first pregnancy and lost 30 pounds the first trimester (although could afford to lose it!) It wasn't completely debilitating like some women have experienced so the doctor recommend Unisom and B-6 vitamins. Apparently there used to be a prescription med with similar ingredients but it is off the market. Anyway, it worked wonders, but it did make me very sleepy! I also found that a prescription medicine I was taking for high blood pressure, increased the nausea. Once we switched that medicine, I was much better. A couple other things that helped me was eating a cracker any time I woke up during the night, so my stomach acid had something to work on instead of making me sick! I also ate crackers before I got out of bed in the morning. I had a friend who used Phenergan and that worked well for her too. I hope you find something to help!

I sympathize! With my first, I was only sick until about 10 weeks or so. With our second, I was sick all day, every day. I started to loose so much weight that my OB was very nervous. They prescribed Zofran, and it is amazing. I would stick it under my tounge before I had to get out of bed and would lay there for about 10 minutes after. I was still sick occationally, but most days I felt great and was able to keep foods and drinks down. My insurance didn't cover it, but Costco carries a generic brand that was affordable and worth it to not be sick. I took it even while I was in labor, but as soon as I wasn't pregnant, I was fine. Good luck and feel better!

I also have constant nausea with pregnancy and this time around have decided to work with our homeopath to find a remedy to relieve the nausea. True homeopathic remedies are safe during pregnancy. However, not all herbal/naturopathic remedies are safe during pregnancy. I recommend looking for a homeopath in your area to help you with your nausea.

I sympathize. I had constant nausea and vomiting with my three pregnancies. I still cry when I think of how horrible I felt ALL THE TIME. The only thing that touched my nausea was acupuncture. It didn't completely relieve me, but it helped some. During my third pregnancy, the only person I know who took Zofran miscarried. Probably totally unrelated. But since I want to avoid medications, it didn't hurt in swaying me from pharmaceuticals. Good luck!
