Miserable in Pregnancy
I am 5 weeks pregnant and I am having the worst time of my life. I just can't deal with the vomiting and nausea. My esophagus feels so aggravated due to frequent vomiting; I can't keep much down at all. I know I should make an appt this Monday and I will, still though I wanted to get some word of mouth advice on how you dealt with your morning sickness. It's so unbearable.

I noticed that plain water made me sick ... drinking other flavored liquids helped me. They don't have to be sweet. Also I found that I could keep down jamba juice better than a meal sometimes - and you can have protein and vitamins added to them. Just steer clear of the herbs that they put in them sometimes - some are not safe for pregnancy. I ended up needing a prescription anti nausea because I lost 15 lbs my first trimester - it works and they say it's safe, but you never know so if you go that route take it very minimally. You'll feel better soon, and yes it is worth it :)

I'm so sorry, I was like that for the past 6 months, but I went to a homeopath & she helped tons. Email me if you'd like her number. I also tried: ginger tea, eating more frequently (even though it made me wanna puke at first), acupuncture, B vits, and baths helped alittle too. The good news even though I know this feels absolutely horrible is that it's a sign of a very strong pregnancy. It usually ends around the 3rd month. It may seem like it will never pass, but trust me, it will & it's so worth it! Good luck with everything.

I didn 't read all but wanted to make sure you knew about the top three things to try. I see people mentioned ginger. I hate ginger so couldn't do that. next is cinnamon. My sister swore by cinnamon chewy bears. The third is lemon. That helped me. I was on Zofran for all three pregnancies and it helped (just a little) but the one thing that gave me 5 minutes of peace was chewing lemon heads. Not the hard natural kind but the good old fashion lemons head they sell in the kids candy section. Try any form or all three and hopefully you will find something that works.

My OB gave me Zofran for the nausea. It didn't make me 100% better, but at least I could function throughout the day. I also ate a TON of crackers and not much else. At 17 weeks, it all magically disappeared. Hope you feel better soon.

I can't offer much help because there was hardly anything that helped me. I vomited almost every day of my pregnancy, often multiple times every day, and during my labor. It was so bad that I'd cry at work, lay on the floor curled up between classes (I'm a teacher) and pray for the illness to pass. It rarely did - but once your baby comes, in time, the memory of your current agony will fade.
Preggie pops were somewhat helpful. I've seen them at babies r us recently. I also took emetrol which is an OTC nausea remedy. These things were marginally helpful, but better than nothing at all... Sometimes.
I wish you comfort and health, and a healthy beautiful baby! Have you heard that intense nausea is an indication that your pregnancy is strong and healthy? Perhaps that can offer you comfort.

I had horrible morning sickness until I switched from a prenatal vitamin to Flinstone's chewables. BEfore I switched I was vomitting at least three times a day; afterward I was down to one. Something about artificial iron upsets some pregant women. I also took Unisom at night and a B6 in the morning, which made my remaining nausea much more manageable.
Hang in there. Most likely you'll be done with this in a few more weeks. Ice cream with milk and raisins was always palatable to my stomach. You might try something similar.

ginger or peppermint. frequent, small bites...whatever would be least offensive coming back up. try avoiding dairy. sleep sitting up/propped up on pillows. try motion sickness patch or medication (making sure it is safe for baby 1st). but then talk to your doctor...there is such a thing as hyper-morning sickness and you may need an iv or so other sort of intervention to keep you hydrated. avoid tv or reading and see if that helps....not sure why maybe related to the motion of the action on the tv?

Sounds like you might have hyperemesis gravidarum, not morning sickness, in which case, ignore all the well-meaning advice about "oh, have you tried ginger ale or saltines" and go to your doc for meds and IV fluids. I'm speaking from experience and I don't mean to scare you, but I almost died from hyperemesis because it wasn't managed well at all. People kept telling me to try to eat, but the more I ate/drank, the more I vomited. (If I only had a quarter for everyone who had some idiotic reply like "saltines!") I can't overemphasize the importance of fluids, and if you can't keep them down you'll feel SO much worse. Anyway, I hope this is not what you have, but if you are 5 weeks and this bad, it might be. Also, I highly recommend you check out the Hyperemesis support website, which has a wealth of information and various forms of support. Here is the link. http://www.helpher.org/index.php
Good luck, and keep us posted!

Oh, sister, I know how you are feeling! Definitely try all of the ginger and tea suggestions. I even wore sea sickness bands. All of the advice you have gotten is great.
I finally chose to resort to unisom as well, as my doctor was not forthcoming with the meds (She had a baby in between my two and was much more sympathethic with the second). A friend had suggested unisom -doxylamine- (read the packaging closely - sometimes its a different drug under the name unisom). I researched it on the internet and in a library and spoke with the doctor's office. It did help although not cure my nausea. I probably threw up 3 times per day instead of 10. And I definitely wasn't as nauseous. I still had to have a few IVs. My kids are healthy and happy- above average intelligence, not autistic, and have all of their arms and legs. They do occasionally throw temper tantrums though.
Hang in there. Don't feel bad for hating how you feel when you are pregnant. It's OK to complain- I know I felt bad bit since it was supposed to be the happiest time of my life. I was happy about the child I was carrying but not about how crappy I felt. I was not a good pregnant person but I am a good mom.

I was also VERY sick in the beginning of 2 of 3 of my pregnancies. The third I was only nauseous and vomited a handful of times. The others sound like what you're going through. Little of the suggested remedies for morning sickness worked for me either, but I did get through it! By week 18 it was gone the first pregnancy and by week 15 the second. Try all of the suggestions but do know you're not alone and it shouldn't last too long.

I had horrible morning sickness with my twins. I couldn't eat saltines but could eat bread. I would not get out of bed without having something small to eat. I would eat very small meals every 2-3 hours. Also, do not drink with your meal if possible. Drink your water about 30 mins after you eat. It helped settle the food easier. Pedialite will replace your fluids. Buy the singles so you don't have to use it all at once. The grape one chilled worked the best for me.I hope it gets easier for you:) They say if you have morning sickness it is a healthy pregnancy :) Good luck!

Ginger ale - Reed's Jamaican to be exact - worked really well for me (just make sure that if you start having heartburn or insomnia from it that you decrease the amount you're drinking). Acupuncture can also make a huge difference in decreasing the nausea and vomiting. And if the ginger ale isn't working well enough for you and without side effects, Chinese herbal medicine prescribed by a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist can work WONDERS.
Good luck!

My 1st pregnancy, I vomited over everything(even thinking about something less than appetizing) until the day I delivered-I hope this is not the case for you, but one thing I found helpful that was suggested to me by a pregnant friend was lemon wedges, she said to carry around a container of them and try just sniffing at them at first, working your way up to taking little tastes of them. It seemed to work as well as anything else. Also, the mint thing worked for me a little, too, especially taking a tiny amount of minty toothpaste and putting it on my tongue. Hang in there, early pregnancy is usually when these things are at their worst, and the mom that said having no unpleasant pregnancy symptoms early on may be a sign of a bad thing is absolutely right; studies of women whom have had miscarriges have reported having no unpleasantness or pregnant feelings in many of the cases, so congratulations, our body is doing exactly what it's supposed to to have a nice, sturdy pregnancy!

I agree with the previous poster about medication as well....your doctor can prescribe you something to help eleviate this particular symptom of pregnancy....just give him/her a call, maybe they can even call it in to the pharmacy without you having to actually see you so you can get some relief ASAP.

Good luck sweetie, you are NOT alone. Hopefully, you will get relief at the start of the 2nd trimester. Mine didn't go away until about 2 weeks ago, week 27 (although better than it was in trimester one).

Small meals all throughout the day. My morning sickness went away between weeks 8 and 11. Ask the OB about vitamin B to help with nausea, they can prescribe the right dosage and type (B6 I think, but am not positive) it helps some women. Eat a couple crackers before even getting out of bed in the morning, that helps TONS. Hang in there!!

Preggo pops helped me. They are lollypops with herbs in them.

Have you tried putting saltine crackers by your bed and have a few before you get out of bed? I know it worked for me. Some women have such severe morning sickness they have to take anti-nausea medication so going to the doctor is a smart thing to do. Also, small meals, and eat frequently. I know Tums are okay to take but I am not sure about anything else so I would check with the doc first. Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

I had horrible morning sickness for the whole time for both of my pregnancies, and the thing that helped me the most (besides prescription anti-nausea medications, that of course are prescribed by your ob/gyn and have been found to be safe for the baby) is these sour preggie pops, I think they're called. The only place I've found them is at Motherhood Maternity, they have lollipops and also little hard candies to suck on--the candies helped so much, and I have no idea why! I'm sure there are other versions of this out there if you don't have a Motherhood Maternity near you, but good luck, I know it feels horrible. Also, after I had surgery and couldn't keep anything down, my doctor told me to take small sips of ice cold clear liquids. It helped a little. I hope this helps!

All I have to say is this! I have been pregnant 3 times now. First two were great normal morning sickness pregnancies this last one...oh my! I never new what could really happen very early on. It started for me at 3.5 weeks pregnant the worst morning sickness ever. 4 weeks later I was officially diagnosed with Hyperemesis. It is morning sickness so bad that they don't even call it that. Please watch how sick you get and don't hold off too long if you know you can't keep any food or water down. I went 13 days with out keeping anything down for more then a 1/2 hour and no fluids when I was finally hospitalized. Now that being said their are many different levels of this sickness for me Zofran/ Reglan didn't work but for some with less severe cases it will. I am not saying that you are going to be very bad but try to be aware of what is going on and get in if you feel dehydrated and lethargic. Splitting up your food intake with you fluid intake is one of the best things to do (eat your solids wait an hour and then drink) never mix the two makes the food easier to come up. Zofran does have side effects for the child if used for long periods of time (gastrointestinal problems after birth along with some others) There are other ways to manage the sickness without doing that . I ate my solids for 3 months and then received IV fluids for hydration to avoid the drugs. But bear in mind I had one of the worst cases of hyperemesis. You may not have this but I encourage you to find other routes rather then drugs. And drinking staight water is the harshes thing to put into your stomach. so stick with juices, pops(caffeine free) and Gatorade's...
I really hope you feel better soon, It was a long road for me, and I am still on that road can't wait to deliver in three months. But when you have severe morning sickness very early on it can be a challenge.

Hey Mama to be!!! OMG..PEPERMINTS!!!!!!!!!!! I had one in my mouth ALL the time as I was trying not to let anyone at work know...that being said....mine go so bad that I could not even drink water...(no nutrition for me or my son) SO I talked with my friends and they told me about nausia pills that the dr can give you.. they are used with cancer patients..and OMG It was like night and day.. I really struggled with the fact that I was taking somthing and my baby was getting it...but all my friends re assured me that without the pills i would continue not to get the nutrition, i would continue to stress, and I would HATE carrying my baby. My little man is here, super healthy (90% in growth charts to this day) and the happiest little man in the world! Hope this helps a bit?
One more thing!!! eat before you get out of bed for the first few months... If you have a man have it be his thing each morning to help you.. if not pack some crackers the night before and set them next to your bed.

I had morning sickness with my son. I was so horrible, I never thought I would get over it. Here are some things I tried, that you could try...and hope they help you like they did me.
1. Keep some saltine crackers next to your bed in the morning. This usually helps with subsiding some of the morning nausea.
2. If you are taking prenatal pills subscribed by your dr, usually those ones are coated with a coating, that when your body tries to digest, the pill bursts in your system rather than dissolve, which can cause you to get even more nauseated. Ask your dr about a chewable prenatal. Don't let them hide this wonderful thing from you. ;)
3. Chamomile tea with a dollop of honey in it usually helps with some.
4. Ginger is a great way to fight off nausea...and if you don't like the taste of it, do as I did...get it chocolate coated! Mmmm...
Hope these help you out...and congrats! :D

Preggie Pops! They have them in sucker form, or small hard candies without the sticks to suck on. The sour helps with the nausea. The carry them at Maternity stores, like Motherhood Maternity. Also, lots of snacks, even though they sound terrible. Just crackers or something. Having something in your stomach helps keep it settled. Hope you feel better soon. I was sick up through week 14. But one thing that made it bearable- I had a miscarriage with my first pregnancy and had no morning sickness at all, and I had no idea that there was anything wrong until an ultrasound at week 10. With my second, I had nonstop morning sickness, and it actually made me feel better because I felt like I knew everything was progressing ok. As miserable as I was, it reassured me.

Oh, dear! Sorry!
1. See your doctor -- this is the first thing I would do Since it the weekend, I would call him/her, too, in case he/she tells you to go to the hospital - you could be having hyperemesis gravidarium -- a fancy term for exaggerated morning sickness. Some moms just have them...but other moms may actually be carrying twins or triplets! You may need a second ultrasound to make sure one baby did not get "missed" the first time. Also, not to alarm you, it may also herald a complication with the pregnancy. Either way, best to get seen by a doctor. If it all all hyperemesis, a stay in the ER with some IVF and anti-nausea medication may help a great deal.
2. Once it is settled that it is not (or is) twins/triplets or a complication -- oral Zofran (disintergrating tablets) saved me. My morning sickness was getting to a point to where I would throw up at work. I could not miss work -- so my doctor prescribed my Zofran (I think, at this point, not a too common thing to do) -- and they were wonderful. I used one about every 3 days or so, when it was really bad, and that helped. I would ask your doctor about it.
Good luck! It gets better for most moms by the second trimester.

I had two pregnancies just like that & it was so bad I thought I was going to die. My dr gave me Zofran for the nausea & it was my miracle. The pills are VERY expensive so they had to clear it with my insurance & I was only able to get so many. I foud that breaking them in 1/2 stretched them out longer. My heart goes out to you, as I was the same way. I was so nauseated and would dry heave every two hours on the dot. Dry heaving is so much worse than vomiting because when you vomit, you get it out and done with. When you dry heave, there is nothing to come out, so you just keep heaving and it hurts and feels like it won't stop. I tried EVERYTHING in the book - nothing worked - natural remedy or not natural remedy! The only thing that did work was to keep a pack of saltines by my side at all times...and eat a few every two hours on the dot, before I could have a chance to dry heave. and eat a few just before you get out of bed. That will really help. Make sure you eat when your body tells you to even if you have to get up at three am to cook a full meal like I did. I had twins - so at only one month I had triple the amount of HCG than a singleton pregnancy. Not to discredit anything anyone else is going through, it was just that much worse for me. By the time the boys where born, I was so sick of eating food and so happy not to have to eat ALL the time after i gave birth. I hope you are able to find something that works for you, as there are many things that can help - you just have to find the one that is effective for you.
