Moquito Repellant

My kids are very alergic to Moquito bites, the bite area gets bigger then the size of a dollars coin. I know I have read in the past from everyone about some vitamins I can give them. I just can't remember what. Also, when they do get bit how to treat it. My son god willing be turning 2 years old in June. I have taken them to a dermatoligist, and was told to use woods off. I would like something other then sprays. The spring just started and I already see the mosquitos, this week I will be putting up the canopy nets over the beds. :(

What can I do next?

You could try the wipes. A few different brands have them now. I think Off is one of them. Wipe it onto their clothes, not their skin. At least with the wipe, you can better control where it goes and they won't breathe it in like a spray.

Hi M.,

I certainly understand you being cautious of using harmful product on you children - Although I in now way condone using toxins, Please Never, ever apply directly to the skin - this is the easiest way into the body.

A great video is Toxic Brew.

We do not get bit often in our family. I attribute it to our laundry cleaners, personal care products & vitamin supplements. Scents, perfumes etc will attract bugs.

People say eating sugar makes "your blood sweeter". what it does is use up your Vitamin B levels to metabolized the sugar - I believe this is what makes one more suceptible to bugs.

TRY the "Don't Bite Me" PATCH.

It's all NATURAL, NO chemicals, it has B-VITAMINS that emit from the patch on your child's skin, which supposedly deters the mosquito's from coming near you.

I bought it at RITE-AID - so you should be able to find it in most drug stores over the counter.

Hi M.
My first thought as I read your request was I wonder if they are deficient in B vitamins. Most bugs don't like you when you have enough or an abundance of B vitamins. That would be the first step. How do you get B vitamins? Well, my way is to realize that if you have enough or an abundance of Vitamin C, your body will make its own Vitamin B in the amounts you need to keep yourself in a balanced vitamin B state. OK so how much Vitamin C do you take? An allergist told me to take enough to give yourself diarrhea and then back off 1000 mg. Of course I was an adult then. I don't recall what he told me for the boys who were small then.
When bug bites are different on you than everyone else, it is an allergic reaction. Again that is a sign that there is not enough Vitamin B in the body to keep the cells built up so the allergen can't get into the bloodstream where they would produce a histamine reaction.
As for bug repellent, I liked a natural bracelets for the girls. They liked to wear them as anklets. I never used spray. Check with the health food store to see what they recommend. I did try Skin so Soft by Avon and back then it was only in oil and I made a terrible mess so didn't do it again.
Just a thought.
God bless you and let us know what you find helps.

Hi M.,
I have had the same problem with mosquito and green fly bites since I was a child. I used to take a B-vitamin every day to help prevent the bites. Now this is going to sound strange but I remember my parents making a paste of meat tenderizer and water to put on bad bites. I have also used Benedryl cream and I had a topical cream that was prescribed by my doctor that really helped to take the swelling out of the bites and to prevent the bites from getting infected (sorry, but I don't remember what it was called). Now I just apply some sort natural repellant and that seems to help prevent me from getting tons of bites. Sprays with lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint, citronella, and/or lavendar all work as natural repellants. Good Luck.

Try garlic or food with garlic. I was very allergic to mosquito bites and live around the swamplands of NJ. I know I have a diet heavy in garlic and also know that it deters lots of other pests, i.e. ticks as well. Never been bitten by one of them it must be the garlic. My daughters are not bothered by them either.

Try avon's skin so soft. It's a spray or oil you rub on, but it is kind of like baby oil and doesn't contain deet. You can also get it with sunblock in it.

I have used California Kids for my child. They have a natural bug repellent. I have also heard that Skin So Soft by Avon has bug repellent properties.
