Mirena IUD Issues

Hello. You may have had bleeding this weekend because you'd been active gardening. I wouldn't give up on a birth control that you like just yet. I haven't heard of the body "rejecting" the IUD and it not being effective just because of bleeding or spotting. I'm an OB/GYN physician and that's news to me. You can have some irregular bleeding with it in and that may happen more frequently in the last 2 years. That doesn't mean it's not working. I'd stick with it for a while longer and see what happens.

I have been on the Mirena for four years now, and have had no period for over 3 (yay!). I haven't had any bleeding like you but it is very possible that you did have a cyst burst. The way Mirena works it doesn't completely stop ovulation, so cysts are still possible. If you still have bleeding, get in to your Dr. quick - or the E.R. if it is heavy or has a lot of cramping. Any IUD does cause an increased risk of tubal/ectopic pregnancy where the embryo is attached outside of the uteris. When this ruptures it could be life threatening. Quite rare but still possible.
As far as your body rejecting the IUD ... I haven't heard anything about that yet and you know how the media loves to play up those "oops the treatment we gave you is really bad for you" things. Ask you doctor - each woman's body is a bit different and reacts differently. At any rate, really you should see your doctor for a full exam, at least to put your mind at rest; then you can discuss your options.

he chrissy my names A.. i too have been on the iud for two years and have experience both light and heavy periods on it. periods are so eratic on the iud i suggest you go speak to your gyno bout the issue. cause i personally am not having any problems. i do have some cramping but not very often at all. good luck. "For those of you currently using IUDs or those considering getting one, I want to share my story. If you're considering an IUD, my advice is to stay away from the Mirena brand and get a copper one. They've been around a lot longer than the Mirenas and their track record seems to be better. If you already have a Mirena in place, be sure to check the strings on a regular basis.

I had a Mirena in place for over two years and thought it was great - light periods and no need to worry about daily or weekly birth control routines - until I got pregnant. The IUD had perforated my uterus and planted itself in my abdominal cavity. I'm sad to say I miscarried, after which I had to have the IUD surgically removed. Come to find out, one of my sister's best friends also had a Mirena "go wandering", one of my friend's next-door-neighbors had the same thing happen, and another girl delivered a baby in Parker, CO this summer, after which an x-ray found her Mirena IUD to be firmly planted in her abdomen (instead of the uterus, where it's supposed to be in order to prevent pregnancy). And these cases are just ones in the Denver area that I know of personally. This makes me curious about how wide-spread this phenomenon is. Rather than wait for the Mirena company to develop a conscience and decide to let people know of the risks, I thought I'd do my part to help get the word out. Please tell as many people as you can. I have had a copper T IUD for about 2 years now, but I am on my third IUD. The 1st time I had it in for about 4 months, then I decided to have my 2nd child and then I had another one in for about 11 years. I had it taken out and replaced. I did give my body a break for about a month and then had another one put back in and it has been about 2 years now and I will never go back to anyother type of birth control. Yes you do have some cramping but mine isn't that bad to where it lays me up.I do know that alot of doctors do not do the copper T IUD's anymore for some reason I don't know. I do know that Planned Parenthood still does them. That is where I went for mine. Good luck to you and I hope you like it. They do last for upto I think 12 years. Good Luck,...Angie

You might consider using the NUVA ring. I use it and love love love it! It is a flexible ring you insert and leave it in place for 3 weeks, take it out for a week for your period. It comes with little reminder stickers that you can put on your calander. There is no generic for it so it may be a little more expensive but if your insurance gives you the ability to do the mailorder that is your best bet.

I have never been fond of an IUD for personal reasons. If you decide to keep it, that is a personal choice. but for me I would rather use a diaphram or the pill if I did.

This is an obvious sign that you body isn't liking it. Well it worked for a while and hopefully you didn't damage your self. On a lighter note listen to your body. I have heard good things about depo shots. You might want to try it. And if your religion does not get in the way then you might just think of having your husband get a vasectomy so your body can heal from the iud. The procedure takes about 10 minutes and they use a local and do it in the dr office. He will be back to narmal in 3 days or less and be able to have sex again in 7-10 days or sooner.

I'm not sure if I had the Mirena IUD, but I did have an IUD in for about 2 years and it's since been about 2 years since I've been off of it. I would have periods with the bright and dark blood and they could last up to 10 days. I never went without one though. I went ahead and had it removed, and it was the best decision I could have ever made. My periods are now like clock work and come every 28 days and only last about 2 days heavy and 2 days of spotting to nothing. Right now I'm not on any birth control and it feels great. I wish I could refer you to some other type that works, but I thought I would share my experience with the IUD with you anyhow. Good luck.

There are different kinds of iud's. Read up about them on the web and then talk to your doctor again. There is also the depo shot and the patch (you have to change the patch weekly).

I had a cyst burst on the operating table. Yes, I still got the IUD but after full recovery from a DNC.

I just read about the vasectomy - ah - now that would have been better!

if the iud is causing you problems then i thing you should try something different i am on the pill called lybrel on it i don't have my period either. it works great.

I had an IUD in between my 2nd and 3rd children and had no problems. After the 3rd my husband had a vasectomy and let me tell you this is one of the most wonderful things he's ever done for me! Minor out patient procedure, 45 min, done! And then You don't have to be on hormones for the next 15 years.

i have the paragard, the copper iud and have not had any porblems. i have had it for almost three years now. i know a few women who have had problems with the Mirena, then swithched to the paragard and do well.

I used a copper IUD for years and loved it, I like the ease of an IUD. Look and some other options.

I would check with your doctor. Are you having pain? Sometimes if the IUD is trying to perforate the uterus it can cause bleeding and pain. You can schedule an ultrasound to be sure...Mine actually did perforate after thirteen months, so I got it taken out and replaced a few months later and have had no problems at all since putting the new one in.

I have the Mirena and I love it, too. I would call your doctor and insist that you want to have the placement checked by ultrasound and to check for cysts. If you are just getting a period then it would make sense that it's dark because it's been there for a long time. Anyway, no one can tell you to keep it or get rid of it - only you can decide that. You have to weigh the pros and cons of any contraceptive before using it and base your decision on that. Do some research and you'll find out what's best for you.
