It is ok to have sex as soon as you get it inserted. I have had mine for 6 months and I did not wait. Before that I had an IUD for 10 years. For the first few months you will have irregular bleeding. That is the only thing that is nerve recking but otherwise it is great.

I had my period for a yr after my mirena but it got less and less each month until it was gone. I dont think its anything to worry about since its so close to you giving birth and your cycle had not gotten on schedule yet anyway. Give it some time, and it could be that just because you hadnt gotten your cycle and gotten the mirena so soon, you might not have one either.

i have the mirena and at the end of jan. it will be a year. after i had my daughter i had the same problem but it was like i bled and then it went away and came right back. i told my ob about it and she put me on estrogen pills for like 2 weeks. and the bleeding stopped . i got the mirena and then it was like i was having a period for like 2 wks, then be good for 2 weeks and then the same thing again!!! it drove me crazy!it got better with time and now i have my period regularly and its lighter than it used to be!! hope this helps! i wish someone would have told me, it would be like that. about the sex before i got the mirena they had me on birth control pills, but i still took it easy with the sex. someone wrote that if you breastfeed you will not get it, is not true that only happens to some people. i always get my period and i still breastfed full time . and you can get pregnant very fast after you have a baby! it happened to my brothers g/f.

I believe I had to wait a month before its ok for nookie. The very 1st month I bled the whole month, the dr said it just hadn't taken hold yet and give me some meds. After that I occasionally spot here and there but no other issues. I've had my in for a yr now and its been such a peace of mind! Don't worry I'm sure everything is just find:-)

Hi, A.. I don't know much about the mirena, but I know that you will, indeed, bleed for a while after giving birth, and that's normal unless it's very heavy for a very long time or smells bad. Bleeding for 4 weeks, which gets progressively lighter and then goes away, is normal after giving birth.

You will not get your period back right away. It may take a few weeks or a few months. You are very smart to start using birth control right away so that you don't risk getting pregnant too soon.

You're supposed to wait 4-6 weeks after giving birth before having sex. That's to give your body time to heal and stop bleeding. It's very, very UNlikely that you could get pregnant 4-6 weeks after giving birth, so this is something you should not sit around and worry about.

If you're breastfeeding, you probably won't get your period again for at least a few months. If you're not breastfeeding, it will probably come back sooner. Even though you don't have your period, you still have a chance of getting pregnant -- again, very smart for you to use the mirena just in case, even though your period hasn't started up again.

Enjoy your baby, and don't let yourself fall into worry. It sounds like you are doing the right things.

Peace,
Syl

I had my Mirean inserted three months after I had my son. I was breast feeding and therefore they said I didn't need to have had my period. I have never had a period since having the Mirena inserted. It is also effective from the time it is inserted as it keeps any fertilized eggs from implanting in the uterus. You should be fine. Call your doctor if you are still concerned, but don't be surprised if you don't have any more periods!

Hi A.,

I'm very surprised you didn't get a briefing over the Mirena and everything about it.

You can have sex once the doctor says it's okay. Did he/she say that during your exam when he/she put the Mirena in?

The Mirena is effective right away. Your husband might feel it and you should let him know that before hand.

I love my Mirena and have had it for almost four years now.

Please check out their homepage before taking others' advice: http://www.mirena-us.com/index.jsp

Good luck!

I'm not sure about the Mirena, but I went through the same thing with bleeding. I bleed the whole first month and then I didn't have a period. This was because I was nursing. I didn't get a period until after I stopped nursing my daughter (one month later!). Not sure if you are nursing or not but this could definetly be why you are not getting your period. This is normal for a lot of women who nurse their children. I hope this helps!!!

If you're breastfeeding there is no telling when you're period will come back. After having a baby your hormones change. ALso the fact that you're stressed from tending to the baby and the lack of sleep etc etc will also affect when your period returns. I would call and ask to speak to the doctor, nurse practioner or possibly even the medical assistant they should able to answer your question.
