Magazines - Likes and Dislikes

It's that time of year again - fund raising. Both the school and girl scouts are selling magazines and I like to support them by purchasing a few subscriptions, but I'm not sure which ones. Does anyone read any magazines that they really love, or any that you've been disappointed in?

Hi L., If you like recipes, quick and easy you should get: Every Day with Rachel Ray! I ordered it from my Grand daughter's fundraiser. It is packed with good stuff. My best, Grandma Mary

I subscribe to Reader's Digest, and TV Guide, both of which I enjoy, and although I don't have a personal subscription to it, I also enjoy reading People Magazine, when I'm lucky enough to come across one in a doctor's office or someplace like that!

I second Real Simple. Love that magazine, and have for years. Better Homes and Gardens is usually ok for decorating and flowers/gardening. Parents is good, but the Disney magazine for families "Family Fun" looks like an interesting one other than the Parents/Parenting.

I think "O" magazine (from Oprah) is the best women's magazine out there. You do have to take it with a grain of salt that she's on the cover every month... but inside, the articles are great--it's like they actually acknowledge that women can be smart and have wide-ranging interests. They have real articles--well-written & entertaining-- about books, psychology, ethics, articles of interest to single & married women, and still some great fashion/beauty coverage (including models over the age of 30!) If you find a good deal out there, give it a whirl!

Hi L.,
All You is one of the best of the newer magazines I've seen. It has real fashions for real women, excellent coupons, budget and decorating ideas, etc. I would definitely recommend it.
Glamour is my all-time favorite magazine too. It's just a fun indulgence.

I like Kiwi magazine - it's a parenting magazine - but more focused on health and eco-friendly living in reasonable ways - not overly preachy or unattainable.

I also like the parenting magazines and Real Simple is one of my favorites. It has good suggestions for organization and easy recipes. It really has a little bit of everything.

i like all those parenting mags, parenting, parents, wondertime is good for little crafty ideas and stuff... the writing is ok, i like reading the letters, they make me feel normal lol... cookie has some really good and deep and smart articles about some real stuff, if you dont mind a million ads for $300 sneakers for your 2 year old and stuff like that. i cancelled my subscription to them when they first came out because i was really offended by the ads making little kids look like adults, imo right on the cusp of inappropriate. but it seems better with that now, i can stomach the ads and get good info from the articles.

I think the best magazine out there for current events/news/politics/general-information-about-what's-going-on-in-the-world is "The Week," which is sort of like a "Reader's Digest" of news magazines and newspapers. And for cooking, I love "Everyday Food."

One magazine that I find disappointing is "Prevention." Every issue has promising stuff on the cover, like "How to walk away the pounds." But then when you turn to the article, the answer is "by changing your walking routine into a running routine." It feels like there's a lot of bait-and-switch like that, or else just fairly unrealistic (for my life, anyway) health advice.

I like Rachel Ray, O, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Architechural Digest because I like to cook and decorate. I would recommend a magazine that speaks to your interests or passions. Perhaps something like Disney mag. for the kids.

I also love the idea of giving them as gifts for the holidays. That is just wonderful because for six months to a year the recipient of these gifts are still receiving them.

Hi L.,

I love Family Fun. It is cheap, easy to read & has some great craft ideas. If you like to cook, Taste of Home has some great recipes! I also try to get some info on current events with Time or Newsweek. Best of luck!
