Magazine Ideas for Kindergarteners

hi. my kids get the national geographic for kids. it is a small magazine, with puzzles, games, stories and picture cards...a lot of fun...

My kids (ages 6 and 3/12) get National Geographic For Kids and love it. We've also gotten some of the many Cricket series of magazines from the library. Either of those are great options.

"Highlights" does have a version for smaller kids. The name escapes my now but I'm sure you'll find it on their website. We also get National Geographic for kids ( it ships internationally) and the kids really enjoy it, but it is small an there are only 6 issues a year.

the national wildlife foundation has a magazine called "in my backyard" (or something very close to that)...it's excellent...comes with a magnifying glass...my daughter is two and has been getting the precursor to that "animal babies". but as soon as she's older, she'll get that one. we gave a subscription to her cousin last year and she loves it.

plus its a non-profit, so your subscription helps with their mission.

Ranger Rick or My big backyard are good ones if she enjoys nature and crafts.

My daughter also gets Your Big Backyard and loves it! We read it at night for a week straight after she gets it in the mail. It has great little poems, songs and even an idea for breakfast or dinner.

"My Big Backyard" (I think it's put out by Ranger Rick), or if she's Christian, "Clubhouse Jr."

CricketMag.com has a ton of choices - Ladybug, Spider and Click are a few for that age group I believe.... scientific type ones, and story time ones... they are great! I give them as gifts often. For babies they even have "baby bug". So cute! I've also seen samples of that National Geographic for kids that look cute.... lots of animal stuff in there.

Check out "Click" and "Cricket". If those aren't appropriate, the company that publishes them has a whole line of magazines. My son loves "Click" and so do my students!

Clubhouse Jr. (Focus on the Family) is great.

Just wanted to add my recommendation of both My Big Backyard and Ladybug (from the Cricket company). My daughter (now in Kindergarten) loves them both. She, and my son, both love the precursors, too (Wild Animal Baby and Babybug). Great magazines! My Big Backyard often has crafts, cooking and other activities to do, as well as activities to do outdoors.

Our son loved Your Big Backyard when he was little. He now gets Ranger Rick and still loves it. He also gets Kids Discover which we all love. Kids Discover has a different theme each issue, and we keep them for quick reference on all sorts of topics, from science to geography to history to anything.

Subscriptions that didn't do much for us or our son were the kids' version of National Geographic (it had way too many ads) and dare I say he was bored with Highlights (the only thing he really enjoyed was the picture searches).

He continues to get Ranger Rick, Kids Discover, plus he reads Boys' Life (through boy scouts) and sometimes my husband's Air and Space. At 13, his interests have evolved but he still loves all of these magazines.

Another cool gift for kids is a magazine from Lego. I think it's called BrickMaster and the child gets a Lego set along with a magazine...every couple of months, I think.

My Big Back Yard or Ranger Rick are both great magazines. You would have to go online and determine which would be best for her. They teach about nature and animals. I think My Big Backyard would have more activites for her to independently. I use the toddler version in my integrated pre-k class and my students, both special needs and typically developing peers, love to read it and learn new things. Good luck and I hope this helps you.

Libraries usually have a few different kinds of kids' magazines that you can check out, if you want to get a good idea of what they're like.

At the bottom of the page there is a place to get a sample magazine. The magazine has different publications for different ages. For example for babies the magazine is called babybug, the next age group is ladybug and so on. This keep it age appropriate but also keeps the interest going for the kids.
