My daughter (5 year old) two front teeth are loose. One of them is turning a light black color. They have been loose for several weeks now. She went to the dentist about 2 weeks ago for a regular cleaning and xray. Then dentist didn't mention anything abnormal said everything looked fine. However, her tooth wasn't turning black at that point. I've only noticed it over this past weekend. Has anything every dealt with this or know what is might be caused from?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the great advice and information and for putting my mind at ease. My little boy bumped her in the mouth Friday and the tooth came right out. Everything looked fine underneath. The best part for this tooth fairy is she spent the night with her grandparents and he visited her there.

Hey don't worry . My little sister had a what I would call a grey tooth yes in the front it happend because she fell when she was 3 and hit the coffee table. when she was 6yrs she lost it tuned out there was blood in it. when new tooth grew in it was fine. I really don't think it is anything to worry about after she looses it I bet it will be fine.

Hi A.,
I am a dental hygeinist in Tupelo, Ms.
Your child proabably fell or hit her mouth on something in the past year or so. That black tooth has or "had" a live nerve inside of it. After somthing hit that tooth, over time, the nerve dies, causing it to lose it's vitality and natural color. This is OK now, if she is not in pain, since it is loose and she is about to loose it anyway. If this were a permanant tooth, it would need a root canal.
Don't worry! It will be lost soon to her BIG GIRL tooth!
Hope this helped..

When my oldest daughter was 3 years old she tripped over my foot and i tried to catch her but she fell too fast and hit her 2 front teeth on the coffee table in my livingroom. I had noticed not long after the incident that one of her front teeth started to turn a grayish color. I called a dentist and they told me that she has nerve damage and that is why it started to change colors so that was why hers did, but maybe you should take her back and let him see it again so that he can take it out if need be because it may nt be good to leave it in.

Same thing happened to my oldest. My Dentist finally just took it out for her because she did not like it and was going to come out soon anyway. 2 years later she was lost her permanent tooth, YES, the whole front one. We put it in milk, went to CHildren's Hospital and 2 Dentists came and put it back in. She had to have a root canal but so far, 4 years later things are good. Just hope your childs permanent teeth stay put. It is much worse to deal with than a baby tooth. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about the tooth turning black. Since it is loose it is loosing it's blood supply and therefore the tooth is dying. Not all teeth turn black before they come out. This by no means has anything to do with her new permanant tooth. Everything sounds normal. Have fun being the tooth fairy!

A., I was a dental assistant for 5 years.....dont worry about it. The tooth is turning because its already dead. The dentist probably didnt say anything because its a baby tooth and already loose. Encourage your daughter to wiggle them out. Its probably just hanging on by the skin. The roots of a baby tooth actually kind of disolve(I want to say its called resorb) when the tooth is ready to come out . If your still worried you might want to call your dentist and ask about it . If they took x-rays you can have them check to make sure the permanant (adult teeth) are not affected . Good Luck , A.

My son that is eight(he was six at the time) flung open an iron gate and it hit him in the mouth, loosening one of his two front teeth. Luckily they were his baby teeth. It turned a grayish color and was very unsightly. The dentist said that it was from dead nerves and that there was really nothing he could do, that it would fall out on its own like normal baby teeth. Don't worry.

A.,
My 3 yr old fell and hit his mouth and his tooth started to change colors about 1 and 1/2 weeks later. I took him to the dentist and they did an xray. They were able to determine that it didnt effect the tooth underneath and that there was no abcess. You really should have it xray to check those two things, they told me to watch and if he gets a sore above that tooth then it is abcessing. His tooth seems to be lightening back up which our dentist said could happen but just to watch it.

My 5yr old daughter just recently lost several of her teeth and one of hers turned black also. (Just before family pics with the new baby and she wouldnt let me pull it. Nice pics!!!LOL) But it was right before the tooth fell out and it was very loose. I decided it was because the root had already died and therefore was no longer supplying the tooth with blood flow to keep it healthy looking. After the tooth fell out her gum was nice and healthy just like any other normal lost tooth!

My little girl fell and hit her mouth causing one of her front teeth to become lose and eventually turn black. Short of getting it pulled, there really isn't anything you can do. Sometimes, the tooth will turn back to it's normal color, after the nerve damage has cleared. My daughters did. I wouldn't worry about it, she is going to lose the teeth anyway.

A few years ago my son fell and hit his front teeth (around age 3). Within a week they were turning black. They basically had a bad bruise. After several months one of the teeth became white again while the other stays dark but looks healthier then it did. The dentist said that as long as the teeth don't abscess we just leave them in. My son is now 5 and his teeth are no problem.
