HI. I'm looking for a fun, safe & clean park area to have my sons 2nd birthday. We had at Harry Griffen Park, La Mesa last year but would like to hold somewhere different this year. I'm just not that familar with different areas / parks. I would like to have a playground and not a huge rental fee if possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated...

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I have a couple of thoughts for you. First, have you considered going to the zoo? They have a petting zoo area for kids with picnic tables, etc. an you can bring in your cake and food.

If you are really wanting a park, I live in North Park by Morley Field which is a great park (it's just east of Balboa Park). It has a playground, plus it has tennis courts, softball fields, archery fields, open space where you can set up an area for soccer, or other fun games for the kids. They have bbq areas as well as picnic tables.

San Carlos Rec Center,6445 Lake Badin Ave, San Diego 92119, is a nice place. The playground equipment is enclosed. There are several picnic tables and lots of grassy area. If your planning for a weekend and want tables, I would go early to save some.

Our family lives in Lakeside. On the border of Lakeside and Santee there is a great park call Shadowhill. You can go out Highway 67 North to the Woodside Ave. exit and turn right to go to Shadowhill. Turn left and follow the street right to the park. It is also possible to come out Mission Gorge through Santee. Continue on Mission Gorge until it goes under the 67 bridge. By now the street has turned into Woodside Ave. Continue to Shadowhill Rd., turn right and follow it up to the park. You can also go onto mapquest to find the easiest directions. We have had children's parties there. They have a nice playground with very fine sand and padding. There is a gazebo and tennis courts as well as a basketball full court and large grassy area. You don't run into any riffraff there during the day. Many families use this park so you might want to get there early or go through Parks and Recreation to reserve it. The bathroom facilities are good. There is an alcohol and cigarette ban there as in all county parks now. We did a fire engine party there and it was a great big hit when one of our grandsons was five. This year the same grandson had his 10th birthday there and had just as much fun. K. Kosanke
