I am having my son's third bday party and looking for something different in a cake. I don't want the same ole grocery store cake...does anyone know of a bakery in the Franklin area or a home baker that does something a bit different, without being too high end.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I posted a website below. I believe Erika is in Milford. She made my nephew's 1st birthday cake (it is the safari one) and not only did it look incredible, it was delicious! I'm not sure of the cost...

When little kids are totally into bugs and critters, it's fun to make a caterpillar cake out of cupcakes - you can use greenish frosting (or any color), and line the cupcakes up on a board (covered in foil) or a really large tray. Put them in a curvy pattern, like a caterpillar in motion. Add "legs" out of string licorice, use M&Ms or gumdrops or other candies for spots, use pretzel sticks or thick licorice or even tootsie roll pops for antennas, etc. YOu can also bake cake mix in flat-bottomed ice cream cones (filled about half full), and then let the kids decorate their own hand-held cupcakes. Have fun!

There is a phenomenal bakery in Franklin called Cottage Confections on Cottage Street (right off Union St.). The number is ###-###-#### I think. The woman that ownes it is very friendly. She makes gorgeous and delicious cakes/cupcakes but is very reasonable. We've had cakes and desserts from there many times and they are always soooo yummy and pretty.

There is a wonderful bakery in NorthSmithfield RI. It's not to far from Franklin. They make the best cakes around. Wright's Dairy Farm. ###-###-#### And they are not too expensive.
Another idea would be to make a small cake and put cupcakes around it. Leave the cupcakes without frosting and let the kids do it themselves. We did that once and it turned out to be alot of fun.
