Keeping Bra Straps on Young Girls Shoulders

My daughter is turning 12 and is developing physically. She is very thin and lanky. She is at a stage where a bra is needed. Our problem is that the straps keep falling off her shoulders. Since she does not use her right side (due to Cerebral Palsy), the problem is worst on that side. For now the long sleeves hide the strap. But soon the weather will be warmer and the short sleeves would allow the strap to show. She fuses with the strap at school and in her class this is a problem. I'm not aware of any specialty shops in Odessa area. I'm not even aware if they make something special for this kind of thing.
I'm open to any advice. Thank you

So What Happened?

I really appreciated all the advice. We have tried sports bras and they help with some of her clothes. But she complains of the discomfort. Against Chauntal's will, I took her to Dillards for a professional fitting. The bras they recommended were great. And not as expensive as I thought they would be. I also ordered some of the "stapkeepers" that everyone seen on Opera. We are going to try them on the bras that we bought before. I hate to through them out. They still fit some and I hope the "keepers" will help. I had no idea that I knew so little about bras untill I talked to the ladies in Dillards. Of Chauntal is still mortified. But she does like the new bras. Thanks everyone for the help.

I have a couple of suggestions. In the lingerie department at Wal-Mart, they sell elastic strips with clips on either end that connect to each bra strap. Also, I was at the Penny's yesterday in Odessa and they have the cutest line of bras for young girls and a lot of them were racer backs. Hope this helps!

Does she get enough support from a sports bra? I'm 25 and I still have problems with my bra straps falling, lol. Sports bras are my best friends!

Another thing you might want to think about is a professional fitting. It's embarassing, I know, especially for a teenager, but just ask the ladies in the lingerie department at Dillards or JCPenney to give you a hand. They may be able to recommend some brands that will fit her better.

Good luck!

Try getting her a bra with straps that cross in the back. It will help keep the straps where they belong.

Have you considered sports bras? They'll definately keep the straps up...whether she thinks they're comfy is a whole other issue ;)

Good luck! I hope you find a solution!

Hi R.. I've seen something in a catalog that is kind of like body glue. It's used for this purpose. I've never used it and don't know if it works, but I thought of it when I read your question. If you want me to find the name of it, let me know.

They sell sports bras that might help out in your situation. The sports bras have room to let them grow and aren't all smashed in. I hope this helps. The bras that I'm talking about I'm pretty sure are sold at Walmart. I hope this helps.

Go to a dance or gymnastics clothing shop and tell them the problem - they sell what is essentially a loop of elastic that goes around the straps in the back to hold them up.

Could you just pin the straps to the shirts she wears? Not right on top of her shoulder, but a little down behind them. This way it wouldn't be seen from the front and wouldn't press into her skin too much if it's close to the top of her back. If you wanted to go all out you could sew little snaps on her bras and shirts to latch together.

Have you considered trying a racer-back style with her? I still have problems with straps falling down, but I find that racer-backs stay put. Also, I believe there are products on the market now that will hold the straps closer together in the back. One such product is called the strap mate, I believe.

Well I would say you should look into getting her a sports bra. It does the job and because of it's design the straps won't fall down. You may also want to look into a taylor, they might be able to help you sew it to where it is tight enough to stay put. I hope this helps.

How about a racer back bra? Or if the straps are detachable, cross them in the back. - B.

I recently came across a handy little product in a catalog. It is a small attachment for a bra that converts it to a racerback bra. So it pulls the straps in closer to the spine and away from the shoulders. I imagine it would solve the strap slipping problem. I have so many catalogs and I don't remember which one I saw it in but I will flip through them today and get back to you.

they're from qvc. you can use them to hold bra straps to skin, or to clothing, or keep the front of your blouse together, mend a quick hem, etc.

if the weblink doesn't work, go to QVC.com and search item number A66434.

best of luck.

Have you tried using a sports bra instead? They have thicker straps and some have the clips in the back just like normal bras.

R.,
Cheap and Easy... double sided sticky tape on the bra strap against the top of the shoulder(a bandaide works in a pinch but harder to remove). You don't feel it and its a quick fix. Better than buying all new bra styles. My straps would fall down constantly as a teen (and I was a B)untill I started to increase the muscle mass of my shoulders. Also try to possition the strap closer to the neck(at the joining of the shoulder and coller bone) Good Luck :0)

A professional bra fitting is a great idea! Another one is to see if she likes racer-back straps, many look like a Y from the back. That will keep straps from falling off of her shoulders for sure. Good luck!

I would try a Bridal Shop they have tux tape they should have something for those dresses that are alittle risqe. This may help by sticking to the bra strap and comfortably to her sholder. I dont know what its called but its a double sided tape for the purpose of keeping clothing in place.
I hope this helps in some way.
