Juicer Recipes

My 15 month old son has had a deep, dry cough for almost a month. I have taken him to the doctor 3 times and he keeps telling me that the cough is not in his lungs/chest. This is good I know but I feel so sorry for him when I hear my little guy coughing.
The doc doesn't want to give me meds that my boy doesn't need so he suggested fresh juice because he says this works as a natural syrup and would soothe his throat.

So any suggestions would be appreciated...I have a juicer that was given to me so I've cleaned off the dust now I just need to know where to start considering I haven't offered any fresh juice to my boy because he is a good fruit eater.

Thanks a lot!
J.

i have no juicer recipes either, what i did have was a cough for well over a month, i saw my dr, he said alliergies which caused me to have reactive airway and put me on a steriod based inhaler, 2 weeks later no cough at all. his other option would have been refux but i take an acid reducer everyday. I have 5 children a son who is asthmatic and he does wheeze he coughs. Children do not cough for no reason at all... ask for another opinion.

what a great opportunity to get a lot of leafy greens that most kids don't care for down him! use a big bunch of any kind of dark greens, then sweeten it up with apples and bananas, maybe a citrus fruit too.
yum!
tea made with white sage and honey is also very good for beat-up throats.

J.,

I have not read any of the other replies yet, so forgive me if I am repeating. In the "natural" foods section of most stores there are some teas there, one of them is for kids with colds. I know that you said that he doesn't have a cold, but this tea helps to boost the immune system and if you add honey-a proven throat helper- and then let it cool for your little guy. The other thing that has workied for my kids is just to add honey to very hot-not boiling-water. The honey has its own immune boosters and coats the throat very well.
I hope this helps.

Hi J.,

Something that works for my son is what my Grandmother calls Onion Syrup. Cut up half an onion, and cover it with sugar. Let the sugar extract the juice from the onion, this usually takes a few hours. Give your son one or two teaspoons twice a day. You will be amazed at how it gets rid of the cough, and despite the onion smell, it's sweet. My son loves it, I don't buy cough medicine anymore. If you try it, let me know if it works.

Best of luck!

I have never heard of such a thing. Has your son been tested for strep. Strep throat produces a dry cough. You don't necessarily have to have white patches on the back of your throat or a fever. May children have had it a lot. If thats not the case perhaps your child has allergies. Both of my children have them. My son gets a runny nose with it however my daughter gets the dry cough especially in the morning upon waking and at night mostly due to the post nasal drip. It is that time of year. I would go back to the doc and insist on a strep if one hasn't been done and mention allergy meds. A cough for a month is NOT normal and if your doctor insists otherwise, than I would recommend you find your little guy a new doc

First, you should switch doctors. It might be seasonal allergies in which case they could give your son some children's allergy medicine.

But, in the meantime, he is past a year old so you can try a teaspoon of honey a day for several days. It might be all it takes. If he won't take it like that, which I can't imagine he won't because it's so yummy, then put it in his yogurt or juice or something like that. Keep us updated. I would like to know what happens. But really sounds like your pediatrician is not taking you seriously

Please listen to the other moms here and get another opinion from a different doctor. I'm not saying there's anything very wrong with your son, but for a doctor to dismiss persistent, deep cough with "give him juice" and nothing else seems very, very off to me. He may have allergies, need a nebulizer etc. Or not, and this may pass as the season changes, but why not get an opinion from a doctor who's paying attention? In the meantime, I would actually avoid the juices -- he's a good fruit eater and whole fruit provides essential fiber, which juices do not. Our pediatrician recommends against any juices except occasional, calcium-fortified OJ; all other drinks should be water and milk, she says; too many kids get used to the instant, sweet hit of juices and fill up on juice instead of whole fruit. If you son's throat is sore, that's another thing -- he should be tested for strep etc., not given juices that could sting his throat. Finally, get a cold-mist humidifier and run it in his room all night and whenever he's in there in the daytime -- helps with congestion and likely he has nasal congestion that's dripping down his throat, causing the cough. Cold mist beats hot mist because hot mist will make you all feel sweaty but cold mist is better for the lungs and much more pleasant. And do get another opinion if only for your peace of mind.

I don't know if this is the answer, but fresh juice can't hurt!
Here are some of my favorites... Veggie juice is surprisingly sweet and tasty, especially if you add an apple or some honey.

*Apple-Carrot-Ginger - my favorite
*Kale-Celery-Apple-Spinach
*Strawberry-Pineapple

I hope your little man feels better. In the meantime, have fun juicing.

I don't have juicer recipes but I had a similar experience with my son (now 8). My oldest had/has Asthma and his only symptom was the cough...not in his chest/lungs either (no wheezing) which turned out to be be allergy related. Is it worse at night?

I personally had a dry cough for months and tried everything...turned out to be reflux was causing it. No other symptoms, just a cough. I would talk to your pediatrician again or talk to a different one. A cough for that long is not normal. Have them check him for allergies, asthma or reflux. Good luck.

My six year old son had a bad persistent cough all throughout the fall, from October through December. I took him to the doctor 3x in October/November and they kept telling me it was not in his lungs and he just had a cold. He missed a week of first grade b/c I didn't want him spreading a virus around. The cough would NOT go away. Then on xmas day, he threw up, kept coughing and then really started to wheeze. I got an 8pm appt at the pediatrician and by the time we got there, his pulse oxygen saturation was 90% which is apparently really really bad. They put him on a nebulizer right there, did 2 treatments in the office and were able to get it up to 95%. The doctor said if it had stayed at 94% or lower, he would have sent us to the hospital.

They put him on maintenance steroids for his lungs to reduce inflammation which was apparently there and had just been flying under their radar. It was very scary for me that night at the pediatrician's.

SO my point is, keep watching him and watching him. Keep taking him to the doctor so they can check his lungs and his pulse oxygen saturation, too, if you can convince them to do it (they check this with a little monitor to his index finger, its not invasive or scary at all). Just stay on top of it, so you'll notice any changes right away and can act appropriately.

You know your son better than anyone, and you know what is normal for him and what seems "not right." Don't be afraid to take him to the doctor even if they're telling you that its "just a cough" and will go away on its own. It's not normal for kids to have a persistent cough and it is a huge symptom of asthma and breathing trouble.

I would get a second opinion right away, especially if the cough tires him or interferes with his sleep. I have raised three sons and have a grandson and they have all had varying degrees of allergies. My grandson has had the dry cough problem and was finally diagnosed with a type of asthma and uses an inhaler or when younger a nebulizer machine when needed. When the medication is used properly the cycle of coughing stops and sometimes he goes for weeks before needing a treatment. Fruit juices are helpful and so is water. I would advise doing half and half.
Just really look for another opinion so that you can be confident that you are doing what is best for your son. I don't think a child should have a cough for that long with no real explanation.
Good luck,
C.
