Iud - Lodi,CA

I just had the Mirena IUD put in this morning. I am having really bad cramps from it. I know this is normal (they told me before I left the office), but I was wondering if anyone knew how long they would last? I have a pretty high pain tolerence (went through both labors without pain meds), but sitting here at work is driving me nuts with the cramps. Any advice would be great. Oh and I took two motrin about an hour ago.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to thank you for your responses. The cramps really only last a couple of hours (at their worst) and were on an off very mild yesterday. Today so far has been a good day. I really hopes that this works for us as I really do not want any more kids, but my husband will not get "fixed" and I was not ready for the major surgery of getting my tubes tied.

In my own opinion, I never felt normal in anyway after i got that IUD. I felt and was told by my family and friends that I was miserable to be around. I always had cramps and had bleeding for like 6 months. I was always very moody and and just not happy. The DR.s will say that there isnt enough hormones in them for all the irritation but I tell you what I had it removed and it was like I came out of this fog and I felt better. My girlfriend went through the exact same thing. Later when talking to other women about that IUD I found that many others have had the same experiences as I did. I know thats probably not what you want to hear, but with the bad there is good and I have heard women say they love it. So good luck and I hope it works for you.

Hi M.,

I would take some advil and get your feet up for awhile. I had cramps in the first two days but they progressivly got lighter and then went away.

Hang in there...it is totally wirth it in the long run. I have had mine for two years and love it.

Hope you feel better soon,
N.

I had cramps on and off for about 3 days and they progressively decreased. I found that they were the worst when I was sitting not doing anything (like riding in the car) The more active I was the better, and the less I thought about it the better. So exercise and distract yourself - keep busy - and they will be gone before you know it!

M., I feel for you honey. Yes, I too had the same issues when the IUD was inserted. Give it some time, cause it does go away. You may have pain for a day or two, but not anything more than simple cramps. When the intial pain goes away, you will never even know it is there, and it is a great birth control. If you have any really heavy bleeding with these cramps, call your doctor. Good luck. P.

I did not have bad cramps but I hear they are normal. After 5 years, though, I concluded that the hormones were causing me to have extreme moodiness (screaming and crying at my husband, for example). I've had it removed and have felt pretty much great since. Your mileage may vary!

Well it looks like you got your answers, however I wanted to let you know how wonderful the IUD is after the cramps go away. I have had two IUD since my daughters birth (6 now) they only last 5 years but let me tell you it is so worth it. I never had any problems and it helps with my bleeding. After my daughter was born I couldn't stop once my menstrual started and since I was not planning on any more my doctor recommended it. Good luck and I hope it works as good for you.

I had cramping for a day or two, no pain after that. It's been in 1.5 years and I haven't had any problems. I do still have some spotting/light period for a few days each month so I may get a mild cramp, but not typically. Overall I've been really happy with it.

I had bad cramps with my Mirena IUD. In fact, I felt pretty rough, sweating and feeling sick and faint.
It did pass pretty quickly...I will admit though that I still get cramps every now and then. Nothing to worry about apparently, but it's still not nice. I hope it works as well for you as it has for me though, it's changed my life for the better.

Hi M.,
From my experience....the cramping did not last more than a week. I consider myself someone who also has a high tolerance for pain, (three kids no meds for labor) but I thought I would die from that IUD! It was the worst....but like I said, it seemed to only last about the first week, then it subsided dramatically. You will make it through. Motrin does nothing for me, so I would suggest a warm heating pad when you are at home. The good news is, that the IUD removal is absolutely pain free!! :)

Hi M.,
I can't say I've ever had an IUD, but I'm a nurse and have given out a lot of advice. The cramping may last up to a week. If it's still goin on after a week, or if you start bleeding and saturating your pads, you need to get back into your OB/GYN and have the placement rechecked. You can take up to 800 mg of advil/motrin/iubrofen every 8 hours. Lots of fluids and rest whenever possible. But it really should go away soon. Also, getting up, stretching and walking around whenever possible, even at work, should hel. The more movement the better. Good luck to you..
