Itchy Forehead and Nose

My son is 5 months old and we are having a problem with him rubbing his forehead, nose, and eyes alot. It happens more during the night, he will rub is face on his sheets and wake himself up. He does have a little dry patch on his forehead, but I am not sure if it came before or after the rubbing started. I have put hydrocortisone cream on his head, lotion, everything you can imagine and it only helps temporarily. He is also a drool monster these days, soaking through several bibs and outfits a day. So, I dont know if this is all related to teething or if the itching is from something else. Anyone else have this issue?

What can I do next?

It sounds like ezcema. My daughter had it bad and we found something that got rid of it completely. It's called arbonne. They are all botanically based with no harmful ingreadiants. I actually started selling the products because of the results I saw. Anyway if you'd like to try a sample just let me know.

I would check into allergies. If you are breastfeeding, change your diet by taking away a certain food for a few days, if that doesn't change the itching, try another food.

Common allergies are: wheat gluten, dairy, citrus, nuts, soy. Be sure to let your doctor know what you are trying.

If you are using formula, see if a different formula makes a difference.

Best Wishes,

My daughter does the same thing. She's been doing it for probably about 2 months. I asked her pediatrician and he said that it's normal sometimes. She only does it when she's sleepy or even just laying on her tummy. I don't think it's allergies but it could have to do with teething (the nose anyways). My dentist told me that when babies teeth are forming and getting ready to show that the roots are actually near the sinus cavity, which can irritate the nose when they are developing. Many times if you have a stuffy nose, your teeth feel like you have a cavity because the roots can sometimes end up in your nasal passageway, which will make them super sensitive. If you're still concerned, I would ask the doctor next time you're in.

Both of my boys, at about that age, did the same thing. They also scratched pretty badly. They both had eczema, and it is called the "itch that rashes" because the rash often appears after scratching. Of course they tend to scratch or rub more when tired or frustrated. I would check for food and surface allergies, but sometimes they will persist even though they are not allergic. My first son outgrew it by 7 or 8 months. I'm hoping for the same this time around!

Could be some form of allergy, not sure, I never experienced it with my son. Best thing is to call his peditrician. What kind of detergent do you use. I would use Dreft laundry detergent on all his clothes and bedding. See if that helps.

I wouldn't think that if it's his nose, forehead and eyes that are bothering him it wouldn't be connected to teething, but you might want to check with your pediatrician just to be sure. So many babies and children these days suffer with ecsema(sp) and dry skin. Arbonne has an awesome all natural baby line, including a baby lotion, that really has helped with those issues with tons of my clients. It's both dermatologist & pediatrician tested. I use it on my own grandkids, especially one that has very dry skin and it has worked wonders. If you would like more info, I would be happy to share and send you a free sample. I can offer you a discount as well. Hope you find something soon that remedies this.

If he does it only in his bed, then I would rule out the allergies first. Bedding tends to collect dust and other allegens a lot more then other things. If you wash his sheets in the same detergent that you do his clothes, then that is probably not the culprit. If he is teething, the rubbing could just be his way of dealing with the pain and a running nose is common with teething but I wouldn't think that itches eye would be a part of it. A lot of people are having lots of problems right now with allergies because of all the storms that have been going through the area so start with the allergies.

I second Jacque H. If it is allergy, I would far rather eliminate a food than add a medication. I would also consult an MD before using hydrocortisone on a baby.

The drool is very typical of teething.

R.,
Aquaphor! Have you used this before? It is great. I used it with all 3 of my kids when they are teething and drooling a lot. Also when they get colds and their noses are runny. It just keeps all moisture off their face and it clears up in a day! Also, I keep all chemicals out of their clothes, sheets, etc.. by using organinc natural detergents, baby soaps/shampoos, lotions, etc... This has helped my kids in a lot of different ways. I buy these products at wholesale so they are actually less expensive than I was buying at the store. The company is called Melaleuca and they have been making organic, natural, environment and kid- friendly products for over 23 years. You buy their products on line or over the phone from a catelog. I can help you set up a membership with the company to use their products if you like. Send me an email if you would like more info at ____@____.com
Good luck!

Classic allergy symptoms ! Talk to your pediatrician about getting something for him for seasonal allergies. The dry spot is probably from rubbing,(since he is rubbing on the sheets). It could be eczema, but I doubt it because you would have described it more as a scaly, or dry red rash. Moisturize it.
The general rule of thumb for rashes is this;
if it is moist, dry it up (such as with cortizone), if it is dry, moisturize it. (Such as with baby lotion or baby cream)

He is probably teething too, since he is 5 months old, but excessive drooling is also a classic symptom of allergy issues. If it were my child, I would definitely be asking what I could give him to relieve allergies. They have a lot more products out there now than they had in my day, so I won't recommend anything. You'll have to ask your pediatrician to do that. One thing I WILL recommend though, (and it can be used even with meds) is "Little Noses". It is simply a saline nasal spray, to keep the nasal passages moist. That cuts down on some of the itching, and helps to prevent sinus infections. My daughter has been using it for my granddaughter since she was a tiny baby. It is so effective, that I carry a bottle in my purse for my own personal use. (I, too, have allergies, asthma, and my sinuses can get terribly dried out from medications) It's great stuff, it's over the counter and it's cheap.

I wish you well. :o)
