I had a baby (vaginally) about 2 weeks ago. This question is directed at mothers who have already had children. How long did it take for your vagina to return to normal size after childbirth? I did not have tearing or stitches.

-curious mom a little wary about having sex after postnatal 6 wk check up

What can I do next?

K.,

I delivered 2 vaginally. Sex after childbirth is painful. Yo can begin to experiment at six weeks, but full penetration has to be done carefully. It's not impossible and the process is fun. good Luck, have FUN !

It's been a while since I've had kids (my youngest of 4 is 21!), but I waited until close to or after the 6-week check-up, and I remember it hurting some. I'm not sure you ever return to your "normal" size after you've had a child--of course, 2 of my kids were over 9 pounds! Just do what your head tells you and tell your husband to be patient and gentle. He'll live until you're ready!

K.,
An understandable concern. But it has only been two weeks and recommended healing time is minimally 6 weeks. And I probably shouldve waited a bit longer. You can try and do Kegel exercises which I am sure you have heard of. You contract you pelvic floor muscles by squeezing them....kind of like you are trying to keep yourself from urinating. (The best way to describe it!). You can either do sets of 5 or try yo hold it for a 10 second count. Do as many that you can everyday. This should help at least internally. But I communicated my concerns alot with my husband before resuming our sex life and he could've cared less, and it wasn't a problem. He was just happy to be intimate again after such a long time!!

I think that it generally takes about 6 weeks however i had a friend that only waited 3 weeks to have sex. I guess it just depends on the individual. I actually went back to the doctor 4 weeks after my baby and he told me to wait the full 6 weeks.

Give it some time it will go back to your pre-baby state. At least you didn't have stitches. I have 3 children(2boys 18 & 13, 1girl 7 1/2) all vaginally all w/an episiotomy, and the girl tore me as well. God made us like that, you will bounce back. Don't worry get some sleep and relax-the fun is just about to begin....H.

I didn't stop bleeding for about 3 weeks, and I was so exhausted the thought of sex was just laughable...but, then a couple of weeks later, I thought it might be OK, and it was. My main concern was how to NOT get pregnant, and you have to be very, very careful. As far as becoming "normal"--don't look for any part of you or your life to return to where it was before your baby was born. You're a mom now! While you are still you, there's a new part of you that was born when your baby was, and that changes everything--roll with it, accept it, and have fun!

It will never be exactly the same. Sorry but that is the truth. You will be better in about 6 weeks. You might be uncomfortable with your husband at first. If you have pain or long term discomfort you should tell your doctor.

I also had my son vaginally, I did tear a little and had to have a few stitches. My husband and I had sex the day before I was scheduled to go to my 6 week check-up and it did not hurt at all. Although everyone heals differently, I would say that when it stops hurting every time you sit down (I had to sit down tenderly for a few weeks) then you are probably okay. Another things is when you wash if it doesn't hurt to wash down there or wipe regularly then you have probably healed.

Good luck with your new baby and have fun!!

Hi K.,

To your question. My son is now 2, and when I still in the hospital I asked my doctor. She said 8-15 weeks but still will not be complete. It takes 1 year for your body to go back to his normal.
If you believe that then okay.... From my experience I have to agree... She was right.

I think I waited about 2 weeks after I gave birth to my son...and I had stitches! But of course it was sore...I'm not sure how long it will take to go back down...My boyfriend was more afraid to have sex again than I was....I guess cause he watched it all from---the direct point of view if you know what I mean. But don't be scared!! Just go slow and be gentle.
