I can't imagine that a toddler would tolerate the use of an interdental brush or pik, not to mention the concern of accidentally injuring your child's gums during use.

Perhaps you should call your dentist's office and ask what the hygienists recommend. For now, I would imagine that a gentle flossing or use of a water pik type tool would be enough.

I think it's important that you are concerned about dental hygiene and good practices with your toddler. However, if you do too much on those tender gums or if you get your children to the point where they resist any toothbrushing at all.

I'd spend more time making brushing fun, finding a song to sing that lasts the right amount of time for toothbrushing, etc. You can mix that up with them choosing a different song to play on an MP3 player or CD - as long as they aren't singing instead of brushing!

I'd talk to your dentist - it's a free call and someone will call you back if they'r not available at the moment. The hygienist can help you even if the dentist is not available, but these kids are this dentist's current or future patients so he/she should be very motivated to help and advise.

I imagine it would be fine if you aren't trying to force them into gaps where they don't fit... But I would definitely double-check with the dentist.

What's wrong with regular floss? I have used the floss picks on my DD ever since she has had two teeth close enoug to floss, and her dentist is always impressed with the cleanliness of her teeth.

Why are you asking on a web site and not calling your dentist's office?

I am a dental hygienist.
You shouldn't need to use interdental brushes on a toddlers teeth as the teeth are not touching. For the teeth that are touching I would simply use floss sticks. Interdental brushes are really intended for adults. They are fiddly to use and bend easily.
Other tips. Use a fluoride rinse once a day that is made for children, and let them chew xylitol gum.
It's good that you are concerned with instilling good dental hygiene in your children now.
