I want to take my two girls and husband to the Texas coast for a long weekend some time in the coming weeks, but we can't spend too much money. We will probably drive down on a Thursday evening, and spend Friday, Saturday & Sunday at the beach, then drive home Monday morning.

Where is a good place to take the kids (8 and 5 year old girls)? What ideas do you have to make this as inexpensive as possible?

Thanks!

No idea.
What I do know is we have found great places to stay at the www.vrbo.com website. Makes it easy to compare prices for condos/houses.
Good luck!

Don and I will be taking the girls soon to Port Aransas. My sister takes her kids every year and they always have a blast. We'll probably stop for a day in Galveston and then head to the beach from there.

We went to South Padre last summer. It was fun and relatively cheap. The most expensive part was the room. We stayed at the Tiki. They were condos with full kitchens, so we could bring our own food. And they had pools when we wanted a break from the ocean. We walked and played on the beach. The turtle sanctuary was right across the street. That was free (they asked for donations) and my kids learned a lot about sea turtles. We also went for a walk at the bird and nature center. And if you want to, there is a schlitterbahn on the island. We went for a long weekend as well. The drive is very long from our area though, that was the one big draw back. Hubby and I left at night and drove in shifts. We made it work, but I was wishing for a plane ticket the whole way there.

I think Galveston is the closest Texas beach.

There is a family beach and a party beach. Awesome that they seperate the 2!

Hotels on the island aren't any more expensive than on the mainland once you figure in the price of gas, so, you could stay right on the island.

They rent beach umbrellas, but you could get one at Garden Ridge for $20 before you go.

We packed a cooler and got a room with a kitchenette and free continental brekafast. We hit the grocery store before going to the island.

You would be close to the Johnson Space Center, which is radically cool. Also Moody Gardens Indoor Rainforrest and Imax. Theres a river paddle boat.
