Vacation Ideas in Texas

My husband and I are going on vacation at the end of this month without children. When we get back we will be taking a vacation with our children, 5 yo and 2 yo. We are wanting to do a driving trip, so nothing extremely far or too costly, which is why we want to keep it in Texas. I want to go to the beach, but it has been since I was little that I have been to the Gulf Coast. We would like to hit San Antonio and go to Sea World on the way there or back. I keep hearing mixed reviews with my ideas.....Galveston, Corpus Christi, Padre. Not really sure where we want to go but we need to decide so we can make accomodations soon. We don't mind staying in a motel/hotel since there is only 4 of us and am well aware that staying in a house on the beach will cost more. Remember, this is our 2nd vacation within a week from each other so cost is a major factor. Any suggestions?

I live in Galveston County. In Galveston, you can hit Moody Gardens, walk The Strand...you dont necessarily have to be ON the beach.(renting, I mean) We also have the Kemah Boardwalk that is only about a 20 minute drive from Galveston. Nasa Rd 1 with Space Center Houston is only about 15 minutes from Kemah and maybe 40 or so minutes from Galveston.
I have lived here my whole life (BOI) thats "born on the Island"....have any questions, feel free to PM me.

HYATT LOST PINES IN BASSDROP (just East of Austin)...is AMAZING.
totally kid friendly, the whole place is geared towards family fun. pools, horses, movie nights on the lawn, smores on a campfire after dinner. We went last year w/ our then just 3 year old and 18 month...it was great. we met some of our friends from playgroup there and we are already planning another trip for late in the summer...really, you can't go wrong.

San Antonio is a great city. You can visit Sea World, the zoo, Morgan's Wonderland, Six Flags, the Riverwalk. Corpus Christi is okay. I've seen nicer beaches, but for kids water is water. Have fun.

For 21 yrs now, I have gone to Fiesta Tx in SA and Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. In my opinion, Sea World is very expensive and it is all about the shows and kids your age want ACTIVITY! My kids are older but I still don't like Sea World.
The actual beach in the city of Corpus is somewhat easier to get to but seems a little dirtier(trash). But there is public beach area right next to the Aquarium in Corpus. The Aquarium is way cheaper than Sea World and more hands on. Then if you go to the T-head area, you can walk along the walk, see the fishing boats. Another fun thing to do is a boat that goes out on a tour of the bay-open air on the top and closed in with AC on the bottom. If you are really serious, I can look up the name for you. Corpus has a 40 things to do in Corpus on facebook.
If you travel 15 miles more, you can be at Mustang Island. They have public bath areas to rinse off before getting in your car to drive so you would not have to stay in a costly motel on the beach. But it is a State park and has entrance fees.
Just remember to buy your beach toys before you get there cause they are much higher! Make sure you bring a baggy for shell collecting! We would collect them and then come home and paint them!
I live between San Antonio and Corpus and love to play tourist in both towns. SA has a S.A.V.E. program which gives great discounts (from the Visitors center). Downtown has the river boats, the tower with interactive 4 D movie, no fee at the Alamo. Some of the other downtown tourist places have high fees and probably not good for kids your age. But they do have a super nice kids museum downtown that my kids always loved and spent an entire afternoon there. Very hands on. Then you have the Zoo with a train thru the park and the Witte Museum with a kids zone. And a great kids theater, Magik Theatre.

I agree about The Hyatt Lost Pines. We go 2-3 tomes every year. Perfect get away from the Dallas area. Last fall we saw Jack Black and his family there as well as Shirley McClaine. They were actually filming in the area as well as at the hotel. If you really want to hit San Antonio and Sea World then maybe you should consider The Hyatt Hill Country. It's the sister property of theHyatt Lost Pines-same resort and amenities really AND just down the street from Sea World. Your kids are perfect ages for both resorts. Have a great time!

We recently stayed in a condo at Surfside Beach. It was just a little more than a hotel and you can cook inexpensive meals rather than eat out. The beach was right outside the door. In Galveston, I always thought it was such a hassle to have to haul everything across the highway.

We have gone to the beach every summer since our granddaughter was two. We love going to Corpus Christi (staying anywhere in that area). We have been to Galveston but she seems to enjoy CC more so that is where we go. Other than cost for hotels, gas, and food, a beach is fairly inexpensive. We do spend at least one day at the Texas State Aquarium, but she is happiest on the beach. Then on our way back home, we stay a night in San Antonio. The past two years we have gone to Sea World, but this year we are thinking about Schlitterbaun. There is so much to do in the San Antonio area. Check out traveltex.com. It is a great site that lists everything to do throughout the state.

Have fun what ever you decide to do.

We stayed at the Vintage Villas last Thursday night overlooking Lake Travis. It's amazing!!! You can drive to SA for Sea World, do some water activities on the lake, go to Gruene for tubing or just great Texas fun. It's at 4209 Eck Ln Round Rock Texas. The breakfast each day is wonderful! The atmosphere was so relaxing!! I highly recommend staying a night! My father had a home in SPI for ten years, and there's not much to do unless you just spend the days drinking. It gets old, especially after driving 11 hours to get there. If you have a passport, you can shop in Mexico, but that's it.

Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels. Just 15 minutes from San Antonio. Reasonable, very family-friendly, and lots of fun for kids (even 2 years old - we took our son there several times last summer when he was 2). So cool, plus then you are close to SA for the stuff you'd like to do here.
