i wish I could be more help- but all I know is my Sister-in-law did hypnobirthing with her 3rd kid- she found a class she took and they gave her the books, cd, and tapes- I saw the video of her birth and it was really cool, she never panted, screamed, or grimmaced- and she was laying on her side and said <"Go get the dr- she's coming... (then a small grunt) and oh, the head is out... yup the head is out) Honest- that was her delivery! Try it out!

Hi. I did hypnobirthing for the birth of my son. I did it all on CD, and never went to any classes. I ordered the CD's on Ebay, so if you live far away from everything that might work for you. My mom was my labor support person, the hypnobirthing method was awesome, but if you do not take a class I would strongly recommend enlisting someone as a labor support person, as I kept forgetting to do the things I learned how to do when I was in labor and needed alot of encouragment. The program I did was called hypbirth and I loved it. And I ended up not having an epidural or any drugs just like I wanted! Although I was still in pain, but the hypnobirth techniques allowed me to get through the pain for the natural birth I wanted. Good luck!

I read this book: HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method: A natural approach to a safe, easier, more comfortable birthing. It comes with a Hypnobirthing CD. The book is very good. I took a private class with my husband from a hypno-therapist in Minneapolis (I don't have info with me, but if you want it let me know and I'll look for it).

I didn't use drugs during my birth. I felt that my birth was still pretty intense, not painful, but I had moments of thinking "why didn't I get drugs". I never gave up though and I feel proud of myself for going all of the way. I didn't have any complications. This was my first baby. I started my labor at 9:30a, was at the hospital at 1p and started pushing at 5:30p and delivered at 7:32p.

If I could redo it, I would do two things differently. 1) When I went into labor I tried to take care of a bunch of things for work and last minute packing, so I wasn't relaxed. I would forget everything and start practicing the hypnobirthing techniques to get into a relaxed state from the beginning. 2) My husband went to the class with me, but didn't practice with me. I think it's important to have someone at the birth that is going to be your hypnobirthing advocate, so your not on your own.

I would do it again with the two changes above.

Hope that helps,

P.

Hi M.,
I also had a hypnobirthing birth with my daughter. I took a private class through a hypnotherapist in Green Bay named Trish Poole. She was a good teacher and miss going to those classes! Her website is: www.patriciampoole.com She provided the books and cds. i don't really know if you can order books on your own or not.. maybe on the hypnobirthing website... otherwise try amazon.com, i am sure there are some on there and then you can get cheaper used ones. It really takes a lot of focus and meditation and breathing techniques. It is slow deep breaths that really helped me... it totally just relaxes you and puts everything else out of your mind. I think at one point in practicing for the actual labor, I was down to taking only 3 breaths in a minute, thats how long they were. But it is so helpful in trying to relax. If you have any specific questions, please contact me and I will try to be of help.

Try asking on the mothering.com message board, they have a pregnancy/birth area on their message baord. I am sure you will find a wealth of information about "alternative" birthing options there.

Hi M.,
I teach HypnoBirthing and have for about 6 years.
You can find more information on my website at www.kimwildner.com, the official HypnoBirthing Institute website at www.hypnobirthing.com (probably your best best for finding a prac in good standing near where you live), or you can read about the introduction to HypnoBirthing presentation I'm giving at the Fond du Lac Center for Spirituality and Healing on Monday at www.fcsh.org (information for that event is also my website on the 'calendar' page).
My experiences with clients and HypnoBirthing have been amazing! I was on the path to becoming a midwife...in fact had taken and passed my NARM (North American Registry of Midwives) Exam, when my world was rocked by what I saw with HypnoBirthing. I put that career goal on hold to teach HB exclusively.
You get the CDs when you take the class. You can buy the book at the bookstore, but the book and CD for labor are included in the class fee. The CD in the book isn't the one you use for labor...it's a bonus for pregnancy relaxation. The book is an introduction to the philosophies and it compliments the classes, it doesn't replace them. None of the in-class hypnosis is provided in the book. So without the 12 (plus) hours of instruction and the CD from class, you won't have the entire HypnoBirthing toolkit.
A HypnoBirthing class series is 5 classes, each 2.5 hours long. In my classes, I utilize a biofeedback tool to show parents how well they have mastered the relaxation, and I also have an Empathy Belly for willing partners to share the pregnancy experience. :-)
Every birth is different, but my birthing paradigm shifted when I found HypnoBirthing. Several of my clients have had painless labors. Several have had labors that were pretty comfortable for the most part, with rough patches here and there. I've had one woman who had a medicated birth (Stadol) who regretted it because she birthed before it even took effect. She said, 'If I'd have known I was going to be done in 5 minutes, I wouldn't have taken anything. It wasn't /that/ hard.' My best friend birthed her 10 lb. 4 oz. boy over a broken tail bone with HB and her first words were, "It's over? Already? It was so easy!" In fact, her labor was only about an hour and a half, and she insisted that because it was so short and easy, she regretted 'not using the HypnoBirthing' (because she never had time to listen to the CD during labor). I pointed out that she DID use the techniques and she DIDN'T have fear...as a result of HB...so she DID have a HypnoBirthing.
If you (or anyone) is in the FDL area, Monday's event will explain how HB works through a PowerPoint presentation and short hypnosis demonstration, we will see a video of a HB birth, I will bring a scrapbook of some of my past clients, and we will have a Q & A period after. The cost is $10. It will last from 7-8:30.
If there is anything else I can tell you, please feel free to email or call me. My contact info is below.

Woodwinds hospital offers classes. Here's a link to their website: http://www.woodwinds.org/CareService/3_Maternity/index.cfm#

You can also take private or group sessions. I'm currently in a small group session given by Shannon Gibson. Her email is ____@____.com't tell you yet if the method works but I've heard lots of good things about it. Also, if Woodwinds offers it as a regular class there must be something to it.

Don't buy the book if you're planning to take a class. The cost of the book is rolled into your overall session costs. Additionally, you do need to take training sessions in addition to reading the book. The book doesn't explain things well enough to use it as your only source of training. Class also gets your husband or birth partner involved which is very important.

Good luck!

You can do a search and find a hypnobirthing practioner in your area. If you don't want to do the series of classes, the book with the CD can be purchased separately. Deep relaxation is the key to an easier and enjoyable birth and that is what hypnobirthing is based on. I integrate some of the hypnobirthing principals like affirmations, relaxation and birth rehearsals into my childbirth classes. You might be able to find another class that would help with the relaxation part. Find a class that is focused on birthing naturally and you will be able to practice the principles. Good luck. If you are in the milwaukee area feel free to contact me for more info. I know a couple of hypnobirthing practitioners in the area. ~~W.
