Humana

I'm thinking about switching from Unicare to Humana. Does anyone have any experience with them? Unicare has raised our rates twice this year totaling $2,700 in increases (that's not a typo) and they raise the rates every 6 months. Frankly I can't keep up with them anymore. Any advice about Humana? We are both self-employed so that doesn't help.

My husband and I are also self-employed and have battled the health insurance game for many years. We were in a similar boat as you a few years back when someone referred me to a wonderful health insurance broker, Deeann Jacobs. We have been very pleased with her. She works with all insurance companies, so she does not try and push any particular plan on you. She also keeps a watchful eye on rates and informs us well ahead of time if she learns of any increases and/or if she stumbles across a better and less expensive plan for us. I don't have her number handy, but you can shoot her an email at ____@____.com and I am sure she could advise you on whether Humana is a good choice for your family.

Have you looked into Blue Cross/Blue Shield? Surprisingly, they were the most offordable when we were looking for insurance. You should give them a try!!

We too are self-employed and for our daughter, went from Unicare to Humana. They have covered all they say they will, even our daughter's asthma medication, which Unicare would not. They are also much less expensive. No problems so far and hopefully we won't have any.

Good luck,

T.

Blue cross Blue shield raises our rates twice a year. We got a great intro rate 4 years ago but it just keeps going up.

Hi Pam,

I have Unicare group insurance (last month of COBRA) and I just applied for Unicare individual and BCBS individual. I did not know that they can raise the rates once you are approved in a certain level. Check the contract with Unicare agent. I heard Humana is OK too, so I would definetly try too. I know it's not too much help...but keep in touch! I will let you know what happened wiht my "unicare case too".

Thank you,

D.

Hi Pam,

I don't know anything about Humana, but I do know a great insurance person for you to talk to. He will look at what your needs are, review your current policy and he can tell you where you are lacking based on your needs. My husband and I are also self-employed and typically we go online to find these things on our own. Greg always says "You don't know what you don't know about your insurance." He has been in the business for 20 years and reads all the fine prints so he knows what he is talking about. Here is his contact information.
