Individual Health Insurance Policy

My husband is a contractor (self employeed) and I am a SAHM/student. I was the one who used to carry our health insurance through my employer. When I decided to quit work and return to school, I found an individual policy for my son and husband (my daughter wasn't born yet) and I was on COBRA. Well, my COBRA has since expired leaving me and my daughter uninsured. I am not really happy with my husband and son's coverage so I am in need of an individual policy that will provide the best coverage at the lowest cost. I have been doing a little shopping of my own to find that many of the insurances have very high deductibles (avg $2500) and they still want $500+ in premiums. Does anyone currently have an individual policy (not through an employer)that they are very happy with? Thank you in advance.

I am an insurance broker and I have found that BCBS of TX has great policies for individuals. However, like someone mentioned earlier that maternity isn't covered. Aetna has also branched off into the individual market. I haven't sold any cases to them since they just entered the arena but I have heard they are competitive. You can also try Unicare, Golden Rule (which is United HealthCare's individual insurance company). Good luck and please feel free to contact me if you need any advice or help.

I have heard that Unicare is sopost to be pretty good and a decent amount per month. Also I dont know how much you make but Chips plan will take the kids....You would have to check into that not sure on the amount you would have to make to qualify...I know the co-pays are super cheap too.

My husband and I own our own businesses and have Blue Cross/Blue Shield. We pay $210 per month for a $750 deductible (the lowest they have.) According to their rate sheet, a woman aged 30-34 can insure herself and her child(ren) for $216/month at that same deductible or insure the entire household (self, spouse, children) for $276/month. We have found this to be a very comprehensive policy, and we're happy with it. The only downside is that maternity is not covered and you have to purchase it as a separate rider, which is very expensive (an additional $230/month for the $750 deductible.) Anyway, you might try BCBS of AR; it's the best policy we found!

I have sell Ameriplan. The cost is $59.95 per household. This is not insurance. It is a Discount Benefit Card. You get discounts as much as 80% off. Individual policies as low as $11.95. Works really great for people who have high deductables. Dental benefit card is $19.95 for your whole family which covers, dental, vision, chiropractic and perscription. No pre exhisting limitations. Company has been around for 14 years. Listed with the BBB. For example Dr. Visit is $40, teeth cleaned is $38, blood work could be as low as $48. worth checking out. Let me know if your interested.
Make it a great day!

My husband is self-employed and I am a SAHM with a six year old son. We have done business with Deann Jacobs for the past several years. She is an insurance BROKER, so she is not employed by any particular insurer, so she will not push one company over the other on you. We really like her because she keeps a watchful eye on her clients' policies and whenever she sees our premiums are set to increase and/or if she comes across a better policy with another insurance company, she always gives us a call. We had World Insurance through her for the past two years and were pleased, but our premiums were set to increase September 1st, so Deann called us and came out just last week. She showed us some other plans and we chose to sign on with Fidelity, which will be under $300 a month for the three of us and our rate will be locked in for 18 months, which is one of the best deals going right now. She also showed us another plan that was less expensive, but our pediatrician was not an affiliate, so we went with the more expensive option. At any rate, give Deann a call at ###-###-#### and she will come to you at your convenience. I am sure you will be very happy with her. Tell her the Brooks family sent you.

My husband and I are both self-employed and we went thru Midwest National to get our health insurance. It is thru PHCS and so far we have not had any problems. The plan is sort of ala carte so you choose the options you want and therefore pay accordingly. We are allowed to go see any doctor and any dentist, there is no in or out of network stuff. Child immunizations are free, I think it is until age 7. All visits are 'at cost' vs. an upcharge that most doctors charge you and your insurance company. This plan doesn't cover maternity either. What you can do in that case is go to your ob/gyn and tell them you don't have insurance and you want to prepay for maternity services. They'll give you a flat rate that you pay for and your done. You can also do the same thing with the hospital. From what we've been told by various sources is that the rates are actually cheaper than what we paid with insurance when we had it before I left corporate America.

When we were in between plans we went to the health department for my daughters immunizations. The doc wanted to charge us $300 for shots and we got them done at the HD for $20. It was the doc who actually told us about this and gave us the option.

I don't have an individual policy, but when I was looking into one, I spoke with this woman and she seemed very professional. I have no idea about pricing - so much of it depends on your needs!

Good luck!

Hi M.,
I see that someone else has already mentioned Deann Jacobs. She is the insurance broker that I used to find my insurance coverage. I also had a daughter in March of 2006 and I chose not to return to my previous job so I had to find coverage for the 2 of us. Deann was really great. She offered me many options. She came to my house and explained different plans. We settled on Unicare Fit for us because it covers all the immunizations for my daughter. It has a copay for each doctor visit and you only pay the deductible if you are admitted to the hospital. Mine has a $2,000 deductible and the premium is $145 a month for both my daughter and I. But she has lots of companies with lots of different plans to choose from. Her number is ###-###-####.
