Recently our basement (where the litter boxes are) flooded, and our cats in protest decided to use my husband's leather chair as the litter box (!). We've been trying to get the smell out using soap and water, clorox wipes, Fantastic, and some stuff from the pet store allegedly designed to get smell out. I thought it was getting better, then last night, I guess because it's "marked" now, one of them pooped on it again!! ANy help getting the smell out and stopping them from going on it (the basement's back in business so shouldn't be a problem now)? My husband will be taking them to the pound unless I can get this fixed! Thanks for any help you can give!

I'm not sure what you tried from the pet store, but OUT is the best thing on the market. It's probably the enzyme cleaner that was mentioned. I had a cat that chose a particular corner and we shampooed the carpet and tried everything. This was the one thing that worked. You have to be sure to soak the spot with OUT though - as deeply as the urine went - in order to completely saturate it and get all the urine. For just keeping them off the chair, I've used two-sided tape, saran wrap, and other things that cats aren't fond of. Once they realize they don't like that spot anymore, they'll start to stay away.

Also, cats don't like to pee near where they eat. I tried placing a small bowl of cat food near the carpet spot and that seemed to help deter them as well.

One more thing . . . sometimes cats pee in bad places when they have UTIs or kidney disease. (I know you mentioned the flooding, though.) I thought one of our cats was having trouble adjusting to our new house, but found out later she was having kidney failure that caused her to go wherever and whenever she could. :(

I have a gallon jug of an enzyme that can be used if the cats or dog do the unthinkable. I got it because I had a daycare child get mad at my mother and pee in her chair! UGH.

This stuff is supposed to be like a good bacteria that eats the bad. If you live anywhere close enough, you'd be welcome to drop by and get some. It's kind of expensive. If you want to keep it on hand, you can get it from stores that sell professional cleaning supplies.

I'm not sure if you can get the smell out. I had a similar issue one time. A friend came from out of state and brought his new puppy with him. The puppy was adorable but not really house trained. He peed and pooped in the corner behind the TV. I cleaned it up with Resolve and Lysol spray and thought it was all gone. Then my cat who had never gone to the bathroom anywhere but his litter box began to use the corner frequently. I couldn't get him to stop peeing/pooping in the corner. I rented a steam cleaner and used it, but it didn't make any difference. I finally rearranged the living room and put a big potted plant in the corner. It stopped the cat from using the corner as a litter box, but I could never completely get rid of the smell. The urine had been absorbed into the floor boards and on humid days, it reeked. I suspect your chair cushions may have the same issue as my floor boards. that smell is like a beacon, calling to the cat. I don't know how attached you and your husband are to the chair, but it may be best just to replace it. Yes, you could cover it with a floor mat, but that won't get rid of the smell. It may be cheaper to have it recovered and new foam/cushions put in, but I seriously doubt it. I can't say for sure but I suspect if you can rid of the smell, the cats will stop using the chair as their bathroom. If replacing the chair isn't an option, call Stanley Carpet Cleaners and tell them your issue. Professional carpet cleaners deal with stuff like this all the time. Maybe they have and industrial strength deodorizer that will get rid of urine smell. I hope you can work it before your husband kills your cats. Good luck.

skunk insurance spray. You can find it online and it removes cat urine odors etc.

I'm not sure how to get the smell out, but to keep them off the chair I would put a plastic carpet protector upside down on the chair. They sell them at Lowe's or Home Depot. The cats will hate the feel of the "little nails" and won't get on the chair again.
