when someone responds to my question how can I respond back?
that's what I thought but it doesn't show that you answered back
You either have to update your original question (usually writing "ETA" - edited to add - helps people see the new content) or write something in the "So What Happened" box.
You can also send a message privately by clicking on the user's name.
It won't show that you answered back. The respondents can come back and check your SWH box for answers or updates.

You can't answer back - like facebook or another site - GetRealParents.com
You CAN, however, complete you SWH (so what happened) OR you can ETA - edit to add - in your original question.
OR you can send the person a PM - private message - be careful though - not everyone here responds to a PM...
