I've never had a maid before, but will be using one for a few weeks/months while we sell our home. Do you tip, and how much? Thank you!!!!

What can I do next?

As a small housecleaning business owner myself, tips are not an expecation at all. I agree with the comment that was made about whether she works for an agency or if she works independently. There is definitely no need to tip the person if they work independently. The "thank you 's" I get are worth a million, though!

I also have someone come and clean my house and she set her pay as well. So we don't tip unless it is around the holidays.

exactly what she said- its a set rate and you tip during holidays or unexpected times just for the heck of it- but not so its expected.

I only tipped at Christmas but the maid was the owner, not a maid working for a business.

My friend who has a maid that comes thru a service only tips $5... which I think is kind of low.

I really think it depends if she's the owner or if it's a service. If it's a service you want to hand cash to the actual maid out of sight of the boss.

Maids thru a service are paid very low. Usually by the day and not by the house, at least that's how it was for mine who now owns her own service. She said under a boss she got $50/day and she might clean 2 or 3 houses. Usually one was her primary house to clean, but the boss would pick her up and take her to the other houses to help finish off. Doesn't seem fair.

hi, no you don't tip. my parents have been using maids for years and they don't tip. i don't tip. they make a killing an hour. my parents have offered meals if they are their during meal times. the few times i used a maid it wasn't during meal times but i offered snacks, non alcoholic drinks. food is a tip. everyone wants a tip and it's unneccesary.

When I was pregnant, my mother-in-law set me up with maid service. It was nice. I wanted to keep her, but we couldn't afford it. Anyway. My mom-in-law says to treat them like a resturant -- if you like the service 10-20%. If not, less. hope this helps.

I have had a housekeeper for several years. I really don't tip her except at Christmas- and I usually tip her at 100% to express my appreciation for her hard work. If she does something over and above-such as cleaning out my entire refrigerator or pantry, I give her more that time because this task isn't in her usual cleaning ritual. Enjoy!

Okay, maybe I am wrong, but our housekeeper is a lady that we hired, on her own, we pay her a set fee. The only time I give her extra is at Christmas. There are times/occasions were we give her other little extra gifts though. HTH

Hi,

HI, I have a small cleaning business - eventhough, i never expected a tip there was a couple of clients that gave a $5 tip at every cleaning and there was others that gave like $10-15 extra during the holidays. Tip is greatly appreaciated but i do not think is expected.
