My husband and I are invited to a wedding for a co-worker of mine in the next few weeks. She is getting married in Jamaica and is just having a reception like event after the wedding. It's just drinks and hour'derves. They are not serving dinner. We usually give $100 at weddings, but my husband feels that this is way too much to give since they arn't serving dinner and she's not family, however she's a pretty good friend. Do you guys think that $100 is too much?? If so what would you give? Just need some second opionions

What can I do next?

I dont really like to give money, I'm more of a gift person. The engravable wine glasses (with names and dates on them) usually go over very well, as do photo frames. If you just want to give money, I'm going to go with about $50.

The rule of thumb is cover your cost of the meal (in your case, hour'derves) and give a little more. Yes, it is a guessing game not knowing how much hour'derves are costing...just estimate. Figure it is costing approximately $25/person, which would total $50 for you and your husband. Give an extra $20-$25 on top of the $50. Since she is a good friend, you may want to give a little more or buy her something additional...Good Luck.

I would give at a minimum 50.00-75.00. that should be sufficient.

In my opinion, how much, or what you give a couple for their wedding, does not need to correspond with whether or not they serve you dinner at the reception. It is a gift to help them start their life together. When we give money, we tend to do so on the need of the couple. If it is a young couple with not a lot of money, we give them more. If it is an older, well off couple, we try to give them a meaningful gift.

I think your husband is right. If it's not a full reception, I would be inclined to give a little less-especially for a co-worker. I think you would be fine with giving $50 and we ALWAYS give at least $100.

I would give her $50 or maybe just a very nice set of wine glasses and/or a bottle of wine. Maybe make a nice little basket. Remember.....it's the thought that counts. :)

Something that I recieved for my wedding from our best friends was a frame that was engraved with our names and our wedding date on it. Then they gave us a check for $25 to have our wedding photo blown up to the size of the frame. This is what I would suggest doing for your friend. You can buy these frames at Things Remembered (in most malls).

My first reaction is to say give $50 and a nice bottle of wine (sparkling wine if the couple doesn't drink, or if you don't). You can also find out where your co-worker is registered and get her a gift off her registry. OR you can go to www.etsy.com and find a nice handmade gift. You can even request a custom-made item from some sellers (like maybe a really nice label to put on the wine bottle!).
Good luck.

I think $50 is good. for a friend. There is no wedding to go to and no dinner.
