How Do I Keep Him Dry at Night??

Hi Mom's

My son is 6 weeks old and every night or if he naps for longer then 1 hour in his crib he wakes up soaked. He has reflux so we use a sleep positioner that puts him on his side so sometimes he's on his back or on his side. I have tried pampers and huggies and he still wakes up soaked. Usually more so if he's on his side. I'm not sure what to do. The diapers are too small to double up. I try to point his "pee pee" down but that doesn't always help either. Thoughts??? I think if he could stay dry he'd sleep longer at night and that would be very welcome!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Mommies! I have size 2 huggies but prefer the size 1 swaddlers so as of last night, I put the swaddler diaper on him as normal but then doubled up and used the size 2 huggies over it. It seemed to do the trick. Last night was our first night that he wasn't soaked. I wish I could say that encouraged him to sleep through the night but not so much! Oh well, that will come in time. Thanks for all your responses!

Walmarts generic diapers is what I have used because they are the ones my son does not pee through! Sounds crazy that the more expensive does not work as well as the cheapies but it has been true with diapers for my son.

We use Huggies Overnights. I don't know how small they make them though. Or you can buy a bigger size diaper to put over the diaper that fits him. Otherwise just get used to changing a lot of diapers and sleepers....

It is hard to find a diaper that fits properly at that young age. Huggies overnight diapers are wonderful. They are in the purple package. I think the smallest they come in is size 3, but try those and see if they fit. My husband works for Kimberly-Clark-they make Huggies- so he knows a lot about diapers. The weight limits on the package are very broad and most parents should not go off of those weight limits to determine the size of the diaper. It is all based off of absorbency (increases as you go up in size) and torso height of your child. So, if you find the diapers aren't holding enough or he is leaking out of the top, then go up a size and see if that helps. Another option is "Diaper Doublers". They sell those at Jewel and Dominicks I know. It is a pad like thing that you put into your regular diaper and it is supposed to make the diaper hold twice as much. I haven't tried it, but I have heard they work well. Finally, maybe you should try Huggies Supreme diapers. Those diapers are shaped differently than the regular Huggies diapers. So, they may fit your child better. I know my kids can't use the Supreme's because they leak, but the regular Huggies are nice.

Have you tried Huggies overnight diapers? I found these worked well for my son. I agree with going up a size also.

Your best bet is trying to move him UP a size, at least at night or for naps. Sometimes they GO more than can be held in the smaller size diapers. With my boys it was not uncommon to have to move them up (at least at night) before they really OUTGREW them. especially in the early stages.

You DEFINITELY want to make sure he's "pointing down" or you will have that problem regardless of size and type of diaper. It will just come up and out over the diaper... but you should be able to tell the difference with that because the diaper wouldn't be soaked, as much as HE is... if that makes sense?

Good luck!

Maybe the diapers are too small. Are you still in newborn size? My daughter had to move to size 1's when she was less then 2 weeks old!

I always had luck with Huggies Supreme (not just regular huggies...those always leaked for my son). We used those for a while. Then we moved to Especially For Baby Supremes (Babies r us/toys r us brand). They are cheaper and work VERY well. My son rarely leaked and my daugher is using the same and she doesn't leak either.

Good Luck!

I would use a larger size diaper. If your one ones now, I'd moves up to twos. Lucky you that he is sleeping so well!

As a mother of three boys I agree with everyone who said go up a size. Whenever one of my boys would start to leak I would go up a size and the leaking would stop. Good Luck!

Diaper doublers work wonders. They have them at Babies r Us and Dominick carries their brand, which work just as well.

They look like a maxi pad that you put into the diaper. We use them every night and they are the best.

Good luck!

We put our son to bed with a size or two larger than what he wears.
We have been doing this for a long time and it works for us.
We use Pampers Cruisers. I have also tried Huggies Goodnights (I think that is what they are called) and they worked well also.

I know that Babies R Us used to carry a insert for the diapers. Looked liked a extra long maxi pad. You would put it into the diaper for extra protection. I never used them but a fried of mine did and she liked the way they worked.
Babies R Us didn't usually have them out so she always had to ask.

Good Luck!

this might sound nutty, but we found that the "premium" pampers helped. plus, if he's that young, is he just too tiny for the size 1's? are you using the newborn dipes? worst case scenario, he's probably just too little and once he gets a bit bigger he might not leak as much. are you changing him when he gets up in the night? I know all the sleep training advice says not to do it, but if you get good at doing it in the dark before you feed him, he can go back to sleep nursing or with his bottle.

Good luck!

my sister found that the walmart brand white cloud kept my nephew the dryest and she went up a size
the front 2 corners should be large enough to wrap around his sides so it overlaps with the back flaps

You might have to go to a bigger diaper, don't go by the sizes on the box as absolute, some kids just have bigger tanks. Also, I found certain diapers like huggies never worked well for my kids.We really like Jewel's brand, baby basics, better than papmpers or huggies, they are cheap and my daughter had a big tank and would pee through almost anything else. Also, they sell inserts for extra absorbancy, you could so these with a bigger diaper. If all else fails, try putting an unscented maxi pad in his diaper. YOu can also try the Ultimate sheet. you can get it at Baby's R us. It's a top snap sheet, so if he pees thru all you have to do is pull it off and the sheet underneath is still clean.

K.,

we had the same problem with my daughter when she was about that age. We put her down to sleep wearing diapers one number higher than her normal size and that took care of the problem instantly. Our choice was pumper dry. You just have to make sure to adjust it to cover the belly.

I hope my suggestion helps

Best

I'm not sure about the sizing, but try Pampers Baby Dry. We use those at night and our baby manages to make it through the night just fine! I'm sure every child is different, but we tried Huggies as well and had horrible luck with them (major major leakage).

Hi!
I had the same problem with my son, both the waking up wet and the reflux. I found that once I put him in Huggies Overnights (made just for nighttime) he stayed dry. I used them up until he was potty trained since I didn't want to ruin a good thing! I don't know how they work better than standard diapers, but they do. Now my daughter wears them too and they work just as well for girls as they do boys. They come in a purple package. Good luck!

We struggled with this as well. I still cannot figure out exactly what the problem was. He was waking up every 1 1/2 hours soaked as was the bedding. We tried everything and the only thing that seemed to make a difference was being very mindful of how the diaper was fitting around his legs. Sometimes the diaper would get folded under the elastic. We finally chalked it up to the fact that his urine stream was just too forceful to keep anything in the diaper. He did grow out of it eventually and now rarely leaks.

I had the same problem with my son when he was that age. We just kept trying lots of different brands of diapers - they're all shaped a bit differently. Pampers ended up working the best for us, although Target's generic brand worked ok too. Also, make sure that the front of the diaper is fully open and as flat against his stomach as possible. And make sure the diaper is as tight as you can get it.

I know how frustrating it is having to change sheets and clothes multiple times a day! Hang in there - the "wet" stage won't last too much longer and he'll get the sleep he needs.
