Need a Good Nighttime Diaper

My 7 month old son has been waking in the morning all wet above his diaper. This has been happening on and off since he was born but the past week and a half it has been every night. I am putting the diaper on tight and pointing his pee wee down but he still ends up soaked at the top of his diaper (most times his diaper isn't even full and puffy). This morning I heard him crying and went to his crib and he was dry and his diaper wasn't peed in. I sat down to nurse him and within minutes I felt warm and sure enough, he peed right up his diaper. I think what's happening is since he doesn't pee all night, he has a heavy morning pee as soon as he wakes and the diaper can't soak it quick enough. I am using Pampers and I even bought the Pampers Baby Dry because it's supposed to be their nighttime diaper but that didn't do anything to help. He just moved into size 3 diapers (I moved him up since he was wetting through the smaller ones too). During the day, the Pampers work fine. I can't go buying all kinds of diapers to do a trial and error since they are expensive so I was hoping someone can steer me to a diaper (or solution) that has worked for their son with a similar problem. I need to find a solution soon because he gets so upset when he wakes and wants to nurse but I have to make him wait to change him into dry clothes. Luckily I use a waterproof pad in his crib so I don't have to change wet sheets. Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice. I got the Huggies Overnights in the next size up - a 4. At first he leaked through because his diaper wasn't tight enough around the waist - I guess because they are a bigger size (I overlapped the straps and make a 'pocket' by folding the top in), then the next night (well morning) he was dry but fell asleep right after I nursed him and I should have changed him, but I knew he would wake if I did (against my better judgement) and and hour and a half later the diapers just wouldn't hold and he was wet (that was a very heavy diaper). SO... early this morning after I nursed him at 2am, I changed him and he woke up nice and dry. So what did I learn? I overlapped the diaper flaps so they are nice and snug, tucked in the top to form a pocket and a diaper change if he wakes during the night is a must (esp. if he wakes to nurse). Oh and one mom suggested pulling the diaper up more in the front than the back so I did that too. If I see the diaper doublers at Babier r Us, I think I'll pick up a pack to have just in case. And thanks to the one mom for telling me to allow extra room when you use them in a diaper... good to know! Thanks everyone!

I had the same problems. Luvs worked the best for me even better than pamoers. They are cheaper, they bring more and work better. Maybe he needs a bigger size, remember dont go by the size on the box. My daughter is 23 lbs and wears a size 5 and according to the diaper box she should be a size 4.

I had to buy diapers that were too big for my son, and then move the tape up a little higher than the natural closing point just to allow more "room" in the upper front. It helped a lot, good luck!

Hi T.,
I had the same problem with my son. We use Huggies because the entire back of the waistband is elastic. At night, a friend told me toput his diaper on backwards. I thought they were crazy. Eventually, I tried it and we had dry mornings. Good Luck.

I used Huggies Overnites. They are wonderful and work well but are really expensive, especially if you are already buying regular diapers. I heard about something called Diaper doublers (here on Mamasource) and they are awesome. All they are is an insert that doubles up the absorbency of your diaper. They are 2.99 for a pack of 30.(that's .10 cents a piece)and you can buy them at babies 'r us or online too. Good Luck.

I had the same problem with my first son. I used the Huggies overnights. They work great. I think they only start in size 4 but they Huggies run small. You can also add a diaper doubler. They were made years ago and the only place I have ever found them is in some Pathmarks, (generic brand). Good Luck. The other thing you can do is, if he wakes up dry in the middle of the night, sit him on a potty chair and let him pee. (keep it dark and warm). Good Luck, K.

I second Huggies Overnights. those were the only ones that worked for us. Since he's only 7 months old, you may even want to consider changing him in the middle of the night...he probably wouldn't even wake up!

Hi T.,

I am a mom of 3 and know what you are talking about! We use Luv's and I think they work the best. Also, especially with my son, we started using a larger size at night so that it would hold more. Finally, we make sure (even if they are asleep) we change their diapers right before they go into the crib.

Good luck!

I don't have a boy so I don't know if this will help but I have found with both my girls that they both had more leaks with pampers and that pampers run smaller than other diapers. I've used Luvs for both my girls and rarely have any leaks but always have wet/messy leaks when I've used Pampers. I have a 7 1/2 yr old and 6 month old. The only other suggestion I can think of is using layered clothe diapers for bedtime because you can fold them to fit your son. Fold them down in front so it's thicker to absorb more pee and with plastic pants over them to hold it in... Hope this helps.

We've had success with Huggies Overnights once they start peeing through regular diapers at night. It's worked for my 2 daughters and 1 son. Sometimes they can be hard to find - especially in size 3, but they do make them. I've found them at Target.

I use Huggies Overnites with my son. It is the only diaper that would even come close to holding it all. Now they work perfectly on their own. He is now 13 months, but when he was younger, he even peed through them. So I had to also use something call "diaper doublers", which I could only find at Babies 'R Us. They are almost like a maxi pad that you slip inside the diaper (put it closer to the front than the back). This worked like a charm and eliminated the need to change him at night. Good luck!

I actually favor the Cruiser's line of Pampers. I think the way their "fabric" works is more immediately absorbant. Maybe you could have the next size on hand - 4 for night time and 3 during the day - he'll grow into the 4s, so you can re-coup that expense... My daughter had a similar problem for a while. Maybe also limit liquids before bed? Or amp up solids during the day? Maybe that is more of a question for your pediatrician. Either way, good luck!

Hi T.,
I had the same problem with my oldest when he was a baby. I never figured out why it happened and never found out a way to stop it. What I did do was to put rubber pants on him over his diaper at night (the kind you would put over a cloth diaper). At least then his clothes and bed didn't get all wet.

My son had the same problem! He is actually two now and we finally figured out a diaper that works for night time. We tried Huggies overnights and they finally worked. I buy them just to use at night time but still use Pampers Cruisers during the day. It is so nice not to have to change sheets so often and for the poor little guy not to wake up wet every morning. Hopefully they work for your little guy too.

try huggies and see if they work any better. do not buy a big package. another one that is supposed to be good is luvs. i would buy one of each and see if that works better. make sure not to give him too many liquids before he goes to sleep. he is holding in his pee from the night before so it seems that when he wakes that triggers his urination.

My son had the same problem, I did try other diapers and pampers cruisers worked best for us. The other thing that I did was fasten the diaper high at the top, not in the middle of the velco area. That did help along with the other things that you have tried. I also limited his evening drinking and gave him more to drink at lunch and snack and cut back at other times with the amount of juice or formula. Hope it helps.

Pampers Baby Dry has always worked great for my little boy. The trick is (a nurse in the hospital taught me this) you have to fold over the top of the diaper to make a little "pocket" on his belly before you fasten the tabs. You may have done this as a newborn while his belly button was healing. Anyhow, the pocket works as a pee catcher so it doesnt run out before the diaper can soak it up. This even worked once my little guy started sleeping on his stomach with his butt up in the air. Good luck!

Huggies Overnights have always worked for us! Now that my daughter is 2, if I know she drinks an extra amount before bed, I might even through a Pullup on over top of it. That's rare though, the Huggies have been great. They are a little on the expensive size, so we use the Target brand diapers during the day. (also great!) Good luck!

Funny, that the regular huggies during the day don't work for my son but the OVERNITES are perfect! He is a stomach sleeper and pee's a lot! So, I trust those and have been using them ever since he satrted leaking at 7 months old!

I know it was frustrating; I wish you luck.

Our son (now 5) had a similar problem with wetting through his diapers at night. Getting him into the next size worked along with using a product called Doublers. I can't remember the manufacturer (but was a yellow package), I'd try calling the big box stores, and also the pharmacies (I recall it being most often at Walgreens).

Before we knew about doublers, we tried maxi-pads. As he grew more we put him in "Goodnights."

On a seperate issue - I remember advice that if a kid could hold his urine, it can be a sign of potty awareness. Not sure if that is true, but could you sit him on the potty immediately after he wakes.

Hi T.,

I use Pampers Cruisers during the day for my 10 month old, basically because the diapers that I really prefer to use are too bulky for my active little guy. However, the bulkier ones work great for nighttime use. They are Nature Baby diapers that I purchase from Diapers.com. They're bio-degradable, dye/chemical free, and reasonably priced. You can find $10 off coupons for diapers.com all over the place (websites, magazines, etc.) Let me know if you'd like a coupon code and I'd be happy to find you one. I was using Nature Baby exclusively for several months, but like I said, they were just a bit too bulky for active day use in my opinion. The cruisers have been great during the day, I just battle internally with the whole landfill issue. I'm researching the switch to cloth - cheaper, better for Momma Earth, better for baby! It's just that the options are overwhelming.

I have heard from numerous people that putting a maxi pad along the top of the diaper does help. I have had the same problem periodically with my son, but moving up to the next size seemed to help me. If moving up a size doesn't work I think the maxi pad would be worth a try. I know it is so frustrating when everything is soaked in the morning. Good Luck

You can use the white cloud brand from walmart, they are one of the best but, that isn't your problem. It is operator error, lol, I have 3 boys and 2 younger brothers. When putting the diaper on a little boy, you fold down the flap at the top, fold it in and it keeps them from peeing up through....Believe me I didn't know about that either but it really works well! I hope this helps, have a great day! Katt

Hi T.,
My son had the same problem. The Diaper Doublers worked. I always thought they were exactly the same thing as a maxi pad minus the adhesive, and I thought the adhesive might actually help even more. I read the other moms comments too so it was funny to hear that suggested. I didn't find one diaper worked better than another when comparing brand names. The only off-brand name I like is Playtex from CVS. I find the others are truly sub-standard.

Good luck!

I agree with trying the Huggies Overnight diapers. I was just looking into them for my little guy, but he's too small yet. They start at size 3. I have used them with my other two when they were babies. I have also used Diaper Doublers. I only needed them for my first son though I think. They take up some room, so make sure the diaper is a little big.
Some people leave way too much diaper in the back of the baby and not enough in the front. That works great if you have a little guy with runny diapers that constantly smush out the back. Try to pull more diaper up in the front to bring it higher on his belly. It may help.
Hope you find a solution that works.

We use pampers in one size larger than he uses during the day and we add what's called a "diaper doubler." That has helped our little one stay dry. The one other thing you could try is a wool diaper cover. I use cloth diapers and if you use a really good wool diaper cover..it absorbs any "extra" urine that might leak out.
