I just got a 4 month old puppy after having a dog for 14 years and the puppy is not potty trained yet. It appears that she keeps going potty on the same area of carpet where she has gone before. Does anyone know how to get the scent of her urine out of the carpet? I think that if she smells the scent she thinks it is ok to go potty there. Please help, it's been over 14 years since I have had to do this. I totally forgot how hard it is to train a puppy.
First, you need to train the puppy. Immediately first thing in the morning, take him outside to potty. Then within 10 minutes after eating and generally every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. You can also crate train him.
Whatever you use make sure it doesn't have ammonia in it. If you try different products and he still wets there, it may have soaked into the board underneath. That happened to us in another house. We had to
pull up the carpet, paint the board with Kilz and replace the pad. BIG pain but it worked. We have a 6 mth old pup. We are crate training this time but he has had a couple accidents. I use folex from Lowes. If you google how to crate train a puppy you will find lots of helpful info.
A pet enzyme cleaner, Nature's miracle is my favorite. It works wonders.
Try vinegar and water.
Sol-U-Mel will help with the scent and the stain. It won't house train the dog though.
I use Nature's Miracle too. Have you considered crate training? Wish I would have done that. My dog is 15 months now and STILL goes on the carpet sometimes.
only thing that worked for us is DEP (you can get it at Menards or HomeDepot). Works wonders and breaks it down. Even worked when my daughter peed on the brand new sofa!
Nature's Miracle. Ask at Pet Smart if they have one especially for dog urine. They do have one specifically for cat urine which I've used and it is amazing. Cat urine is particularly hard to get rid of and we had tried everything, including expensive, industrial cleaners. Nothing worked like Nature's Miracle. One thing to keep in mind: the enzymes work while wet, so some people suggest putting a piece of plastic wrap or plastic bag over the spot to keep it wet - and working - longer. Don't be in a hurry to get it dry. It kind of stinks until it is dry, but once dry, we've had 100% good results. Good luck!
Go buy a pet carpet cleaner. It will neutralize the scent and the dog shoudl stop peeing there.
If you try the other's ideas and they don't work.....I called out the carpet cleaning company thru home depot (Chem Dry). They have a special treatment for pet urine, which would even be replacing the pad if needed. I would try all the other solutions first and make sure the new puppy is potty trained before hiring someone though. Because it can be expensive. But it worked!!! It cost me about $100 for our dining room, which is where our dog (not puppy) chose to mark his spot in our new home. It smelled horrible. Good luck with the smell and the training.
We never had any luck with the enzyme cleaners. We did really like Zep odor control from either Home Depot or Menards. It was the only thing that worked for us. Our puppy was 6 months old and about 50 lbs when we were training him, so he made a big mess. Good luck!
