Does anyone have issues with their child or children having hot ears? My ten year-old-son's top part of the outer ears are occassionally bright red and hot to the touch. He can also feel the heat. He has this issue on and off for a few years and it occurs when he is well (not sick or running a fever). I have tried to research the issue on the internet to no avail. I have also asked his doctor and he has never heard of it. Any advice?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses! I plan on keeping a food journal to try and isolate the food/foods that are causing this. And if that does not work – I will have him tested for Lyme disease.

I've actually had this problem and have related it to an allergy. It hasn't happened in a while, but was frequently happening the day after I dyed my hair. I would see if you can find an association with the laundry soap or bath products that you use. Maybe he is sensitive to one of those things.

L.,
You have received very good points on what may be your son's problem. I was wondering if it could be stress related. When I was in school I remember having this same issue....then this same issue went away.

Good luck,
Elisa

This happens to me when I am under a lot of stress. It has not happened much since I quit my job to stay home with my kids, but it used to happen a lot when I was working. Good luck figuring out what is going on!

Everyone in my family has allergies. And, sometimes my ears get hot feeling and itchy. I'm betting that it has something to do with allergies. Perhaps a sensitivity to a food or airborne pollens, etc. Does he have any other symptoms to suggest that allergies are involved? Ask your doctor if this could be the case.

L., My dad and I have both always had this problem. It is allergy related. Sometimes airborne allergies and sometimes we don't even feel allergetic. Obviously, it's something we have been exposed to, however. This may be the only symptom he has. Over time, it may become more obvious. Try keeping a food journal and also include how he feels when his ears get hot and red. Before making an appointment with an allergist, I would try to figure out what is causing it. He can always be tested at an allergist for the common allergens (if you would rather take that route right away).

It might be an allergy to something or stress related. Try giving him benedryl and rubbing it with alchol, it's cooling. Good luck

Hi L.-

My son has food allergies and the doctor said that ears turning red shortly after eating certain foods can be a sign of a food allergy.

Good luck,
K.

Something maybe that his ear has come in contact with that he's allergic to or maybe a sunburn or maybe an otitis externa (infection in the outer part of the ear). My son's ears will do that as well sometimes. I attribute it to too much sun or an irritant on his pillow. Feather pillows tend to be very allergic. I'm anxious to read your other responses.

Hi L.,

I haven't ever encountered this problem before, but your post made me curious. I did some checking online and actually found a message board about "hot ears" and there are various posts. But I thought you might want to check it out as there is one post that says her "hot ears" were actually the result of lyme disease. Here is the link:

Wow, this is interesting. My oldest son, now 30, had this growing up (don't know if he still does). I read the posts both here and where someone left a link. High blood pressure makes the most sense to me to be the cause in his case. My son seemed to be the healthiest in all the family. When he did get sick he would just sleep all day and then be fine. He got well without much in the way of symptoms or any medicine. But he did get diagnosed with high blood pressure at age 4 when he was going through some anger. He's now on blood pressure medication because he was diagnosed at age 29 with hypertension. Hmmmm, interesting. I never even thought others were getting that symptom too!

Speaking of allergies, some of us in the family have them but he was never diagnosed with any, didn't appear to have any reactions but all my babies didn't do well with cow's milk.

Both my husband and son have this and it doesn't seem to be related to stress or allergies. They are both very hot-blooded and seem to feel warm all the time. I think it's just the way their bodies handle heat. There certainly isn't anything medically wrong. :)

My oldest son use to have this problem. He started around the age of 10 years old and is now 26. I ask the Dr. when he was young what would cause his ears to get so red, because he didn't seem sick. I never got an answer from the Dr. only that he didn't really know. Since both our sons started this around age 10, I wonder now if its hormone related, getting ready for puberty. My son also use to sweat excessively when he was playing outside, more than normal and then his ears would continue to be red and hot to the touch even after the rest of his body cooled off.
Like I said I never got an answer as to why, and as he got up in his teen years he stop having this problem. I wouldn't worry too much, hope you can find an answer. Goodluck!

I actually have this same problem and it usually occurs when I am getting excited about something or just really stressed out and it is kind of weird because I have noticed that my grandson has the same problem. He will always have this but there is nothing to it.

Sounds like he experiencing a side effect from a food or a fruit juice. Sometimes with a strawberry smoothie her face will become hot and flush. But, yet when she eats fresh strawberries she is fine. When he has the symptoms try to remember all the things he is eating or drinking, touching, or breathing.
