High Lead Levels in 21Month Old.

Hello Mamas. I recently had my 21mos old daughter tested for lead and anemia. We weren't too concerned since her older sister hadn't had any problems and not too much has changed since she was tested. Unfortunately, I received a call yesterday from the pediatrician's office to inform me my youngest's levels were higher than they should be. Levels at 10blls is considered high and my daughter's are at 15bbls! I'm waiting for a call from Children's to schedule an appointment and I have to admit I'm majorly stressing. Has anyone else gone through this? What kind of testing should I expect? Did your child come through it ok?

We live in an older home. When we bought our home we had a home inspection and lead wasn't found. All of the dry wall had been replaced a couple years before we bought the house so it shouldn't be a problem. There has been that huge problem with lead being found in children's toys and while we've been vigiliant in keeping track of which they are, I know that nothing is 100% and will be checking the lists again. This daughter puts more in her mouth than the first because she doesn't use a paci like my first did. I may need to get rid of some of their plastic jewelry just to be sure that isn't the culprit. I've read that calcium, iron and vitamin C helps flush it out of the system. I'm not sure where the source is and am worried about both of my daughters' health!

What can I do next?

Have you had the soil in your yard tested? Lead can stay in the first 3 inches. Planting sunflowers is a way to absorb the lead (but don't eat the seeds, since they'll have the lead). Also contact a local lead-safe group. They have much more experience with this kind of issues and can find were the lead has been "hiding" in your house. In Springfield, this is the link: http://www.ci.springfield.oh.us/depts/hr/leadsafe.htm

One more thing, Mexican candy (the spicy kind) contains lead levels that could be harmful children (not enough for adults). So there might be other things you are consuming that could contain lead without knowing!

I had my twins tested at one year and then requested another test at 2 years becuase we live in an old house and had recently gutted our kitchen to build a new one. The lead levels for one of my twins came back high. I was suspicious of the results, thinking if someone was going to have high levles it would have been the other twin because he was the one who put everything in his mouth. I voiced my concerns to the dr's office and requested a second test. The second test was not a finger prick, it was a interveinous blood draw (horrible expereince for us becuase they couldn't get a vein in the one twin's arm). I was told this type of blood draw is more reliable becuase with a finger prick, it could pick up anything that was just "on the skin" and not necessarily in the blood. This test came back normal for both of them. Thankfully!

I too was very upset about the possibilty of high lead levels but with what I now know I would recommend that you have the second test done (maybe this is what Children's is going to do?)and go from there. I was sure I had done something horrible to my child all becuase I wanted a new kitchen but in the end it turned out okay for us. I hope you have a similar result.

Our 3 year old had the problem with the lead poison...and our house is up to date...but our house is built on a busy street where there's a lot of traffic, even though most of the play time is towards the back of the yard...the wind picks up the dirt and moves around all the toxins in the air, dirt...ect...and the dirt levels in our yard contains lead..because of the old cars from the older times...on top, could be pipes in your water supply. And if anything...the place where you had your child tested for lead, will test toys that contain paints. On top, they are saying now that childrens books may contain lead in the print. You can have anything checked if you suspect. If your girls play in the dirt wash their hands...always after play and do not allow them to eat anything off the ground!! Lead poisoning can cause a lot of problems later in life for them....for instance brain developement, kidneys, and can cause tumors and all sorts of internal problems. My sisters youngest son who is now 17years of age...has had lead poisoning and because they never understood it, he now has some mental developement problems and also he has kidney failure. He never had these problems until he turned 10. So Good Luck, & I will keep your children in prayer.

If you haven't moved and live in the same house then you know the answer, don't you?
We import 98% of the toys today from overseas. Mattel, Fisher Price, etc., all have massive manufacturing plants in China, etc., and guess where the lead problem is coming from in the toys?
Boycott Mattel and Fisher Price, we do. Bring the manufacturing of American owned company toys back to the US where the standards have to be met, put the US citizens back to work and watch the problems go away.

The county health dept. will usually come do a free screening in your home, you could have them test things that may not be regularly tested like bath tubs, blinds, toys, etc...
Also, is she in a daycare that the older wasn't? Attending play group in a new place? Church? Maybe somewhere you visit you didn't with the first.

it's usually windowsills, kitchen, outdoor, and bathroom paint. the state does free home inspections for lead paint here, you might check and see if that's something you can do. that's scary, i'm sorry you have to worry about this!!

yes. vitamin c. our kids LOVE emergen-C-- it's a fizzy powdered drink mix with other added vitamins... they have some flavors with added calcium too.
