Hiccups in the Womb..

So my baby has hiccups almost twice a day. I know it is a normal thing but does it mean that she will be more prone to have colic as a newborn? I'm just curious, I'd like to here other peoples opinions. Thanks! :)

What can I do next?

I've never heard of the hiccups-colic connection.

My son had the hiccups all the time in the womb, from early on too. (And when I say all the time, I mean ALL THE TIME. If he wasn't sleeping, he was hiccupping.) He has never had colic and he is the most carefree, easy going baby I have ever met!

No.
Both my kids hiccuped in the womb... a lot.
They both are NOT colicky nor anything else 'wrong.
But my daughter was a gassy infant...

My daughter had hiccups all the time when she was in the womb... and she had hiccups all the time after she was born! She was not a fussy baby at all, no colic, and I have always considered her my "easy" baby!

I have never heard of that connection. But I have heard if your baby hiccups a lot in the womb it means it will be born with a full head of hair. My baby hiccuped for hours everyday in the last trimester, had zero colic as an infant and was born with a full head of hair:)

Hi L.

Fetus hiccups are normal, but doctors are not completely sure what they are for. Most believe the hiccups stengthen the lungs. I have not hear that fetus hiccups are more likely to have colic.

LOTS of hiccups from my daughter, but no colic. I haven't heard of that connection, but it wasn't true for us.

Best wishes for an easy delivery and a healthy happy baby!!! :)

My DD didn't have colic issues. She had hiccups almost ALL the time... seriously. at least 3-4 times a day... We even got to "hear" them once at a doctors visit. :) She did have a few gas issues, but they went away when I stopped eating dairy.

I loved feeling those little hiccups. They made me giggle every time I felt them. Hiccups dont have any correlation to future digestive problems like colic or reflux so no need to worry.

Congratulations!

Well, my twins had plenty of hiccups inutero and were colicky, but I don't think there is necessarily a connection.

My baby had hiccups A LOT in the womb. When she was born she was a little tricky, but at 7 weeks she started sleeping through the night ( I mean WAY through the night... 11-13 hours). She still gets hiccups just about every day, usually just as she's falling asleep at night. She's no longer difficult at all and is about the furthest thing from a colicky baby any parent could hope for. Hope that makes you feel better!

Both my babies had hiccups & no colic.

In-fact hiccups helped get her brother & dad get attached to her very early ,as they both wanted to touch my tummy when she was hiccuping :-)

I think all babies have hiccups before they are born. I believe it has something to do with lung development.

i have had two neither had terrible colic. yes some but not a bunch. i think we all hiccup because we have too much air in our stomaches. when i tickle my little one and she laughs alot she gets the hiccups! so cute but then i try not to make her laugh so much :) i dont understand when ppl talk about how terrible colic was or is. my own hubby talks about how bad it was with my first. i dont recall that at all yeah they are uncomfotable but you burp them or shift there legs up and down and get the bubbles out and move on. it was like mins not hours???? congrats on your new hiccupy baby.

My son had lots of hiccups in the womb and then a few weeks of colic until I loaded up on probiotics (80 billion/day) and within 24 hours my breastfed baby stopped having colic. Maybe try boosting your "friendly flora" intake?

Both my kids had hiccups all the time in the womb! My first didnt have colic at all, but she was breastfeed for about 5 months. My son, had colic, but he wasnt able to breastfeed so I think the colic was from the formula, not the hiccups. I dont see how it would be related.

I have two kids, both hiccuped REGULARLY in the womb - as in twice a day would have been a quiet day for them. One was colicky for 14 miserable weeks, the other was as happy as a clam. - As another poster noted there is an old wives tale associating hiccups with hair, both my boys were really hairy at birth. :)

My son had hiccups at least twice a day in my last trimester, and he was the most easy-going, even-tempered baby. He was a joy, and only cried when he needed something. He did get the hiccups a lot though ; )

No... Our daughter had so many hiccups in the womb even while I was in labor! No Colic..

But she did tend to have hiccups as an infant.. The pedi nurse told me to expect it and she was right..

I also asked some other moms on facebook and none of them had this problem with hiccup babies in wombs ending up with colic..

Hello,

All 3 of my children had the hiccups in the womb, my oldest and youngest had them multiple times a day and still actually will get them if they laugh really hard. My middle child had them but not as frequently as the other two and she was the one that had colic. :) Guess it's all up to that baby and how he/she's temperment will be. :)

My daughter had hiccups almost every day and sometimes three times a day while I was pregnant with her. I have not heard of hiccups causing colic, but I have heard that hiccups in the womb help develop the lungs. My daughter was born 5 weeks early with no respiratory problems, and despite the fact that she wasn't THAT early, I always assumed that the hiccups played a part that. She did not have colic at all as a newborn either. So I would say the hiccups are very a normal, beneficial experience - not to mention really cool to feel and watch! Good luck with everything!

L.,
My son also had them. Hiccups are sometimes a sign of a sensory integration problem. I had previously worked as an early intervention specialist and the OT there specialized in SI issues. I asked her if this could be what was going on with my son. She said I was overreacting and if it was still going on when he turned one year old to bring him in for a eval. Sure enough it was. But someone not trained would probably never notice.
But on the other had he was the best baby ever, no colic and he rarely cried.

All of my kids hiccuped like mad...lol it made me sick to my stomach the movement was so much. For my kids at least even now at 5, 3 and newborn hiccups is a sign of growing. My kids get bad hiccups every time they go through a growth spurt. It's realy cool to see., they eat like mad, hiccup and then gain a few pounds. Funny...I don't think it is a sign of colic. and In my opinion Colic doesn't exhist, my son, my second was diagnosed with "Colic" until we found the right doctor who looked into things earlier and realized he has "silent reflux" and was truly in pain...Please if you have a baby that cries a lot really try to find out what is wrong. Don't just let a pediatrician say he/she has colic.

Hiccups in the womb (which both of my kids had loads) is a good sign: it means your little one is practicing breathing. And breathing and swallowing is a tough act to learn. The hiccups result from them not quite sinking their breathing and sucking (remember - they "practice breathe" amniotic fluid in the womb).
