Help! Sticky Spot on a Shirt

Hi, I need some advice on how to treat this problem on my white shirt. I took it out of laundry basket to put it in the washing machine, and noticed that it had an area that looked kind of dark. I touched it, and it was sticky - like I had a very sticky sticker on the shirt and stickiness stayed there after the sticker was removed and lint and other gunk got stuck on it to make it look darker. I tried pulling individual lint (or something, maybe it's just the sticky stuff that's darker looking) pieces but it didn't come off well.

How do you get rid of this kind of stickiness on the shirt? I thought if I throw it in the wash it'll just attract more lint and get worse. I don't want to give up on this favorite white shirt of mine.

Any advice would be helpful. Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for everyone's input! I went to Target and bought Goo Gone (only thing of this kind that they carried) and it worked like a miracle - melted the stickiness away! I didn't know that these kinds of cleaners specifically for stickiness and goo's existed - so thank you so much for responding! K's Mom, I read your post after getting Goo Gone. I did wonder if nail polish remover worked, even before posting here. Thank you for writingm now I know that it does.

Try a solvent like Goo Gone or something similar, it can be found in the cleaning/detergent aisle at the store. I unknowingly washed a shirt of my son's with a piece of chewed gum in the breast pocket (ewww!). It was a stained, sticky mess. I saturated in with Goo Gone, let it sit for quite a while, then scraped away. I treated the stain with oxy clean and now you would never know what had been there. Just be sure to wash the goo gone out with a little detergent before putting in the washing machine. Don't give up on that shirt just yet!

Try fingernail polish remover. It will break down the sticky and help remove it.Then scub with Dawn dishwashing liquid to stop it from staining. then wash in the washer.

Goof- off but I've never used it on anything white that I can remember. My sons had left their bus assignment stickers on their shirts for the whole 1st week of school & every shirt was saved.

Shaklee's Basic H cleaner would remove it without damaging the fabric.
