HELP!! My Daughter Is an Escape Artist!

My daughter learned how to unlock the doors and open them and wonder out. I put doorknob covers over the knobs, she puls them apart. So, I put chains up high on the doors. Well, she figured those out as well. There is nothing by the doors for her to climb on, but she will invariably find something - even if she has to dump out the trash can. I am scared to death that she will escape one day and I won't know it. It is a dangerous world and I need help with this. if any of you have been through this, what worked for you? I thought about those door chains with the locks, but they open from the inside the same way the regular ones do, so that won't work. Please...what has worked for you?

Thanks so much,

L.

**On the double bolts, I have though of that, but do not like the idea of not being able to get out of the house in an emergency without having to fumble with the keys. I have a friend who had a family member die in a fire that way. So, although, I appreciate the value of them, I am not comfortable with them because of the danger they can pose when the key is not in place in an emergency.

Do they make a lock that uses a combination on the inside rather than a key? That might work out really well. Thanks again.

What can I do next?

we put the slide locks on our doors they are kinda like the chains but just slide instead & we put them up so high that i have to stand on my tip toes, so even if my daughter stood on a chair she couldnt reach them. but if you cant put them high enough i would say get the deadbolts that use a key on the inside too.

They make the deadbolt locks that have to be unlocked with a key.

we have double bolts on our doors, that way they can only be unlocked with the key from inside and out. good luck.

We ended up putting duct tape around the plastic doorknob covers. It kept him from being able to open the doors, but it also had guests stumped and we had to "let" them out. I don't know if that will help or not. I was in your boat and tried everything. We had 4 different doors for him to escape from and it was a nightmare trying to figure out how to keep him in.

We bought an alarm at Harbor Freights for our back door. It sits at the very top and when the door opens it lets off quite a noise. It can be turned on and off, but it would be difficult for her-until she figures it out I guess-clever little stinker!

Good luck

We never had that issue. Our daughter is 13 now.

However, we've always had an alarm system which has the "babysitter" feature on it which beeps every time a window or door is opened or closed. We also have double bolts.

The alarm could possibly deter her? Sounds like she is a strong willed little girl out to explore her world. I know you must worry about the escaping. I would too.

Just my opinion. Good luck.

My solution to my daughter opening the door is the alarm. I have put alarm on all doors and it lets us know when any of the doors open and closes. I hope something works for you! I know how difficult it is to keep our kids safe...its a very dangerous world out there. Good luck!
