Hi moms!
I LOVE to take pictures and make digital photo books. I now have 2 kids. I used to have a folder for kid1 & now I have a folder for kid2 and a folder for kid1 & 2 combined since they are in pictures together. And now with Christmas, do I divide all the pictures up or just make 1 Christmas folder & keep making "event" folders instead of individual kid folders? Help, I wanna get organized and have a system for the New Year! What do you do?

I suggest Creative Memories software called Memory Manager. It lets you organize photos by putting them in multiple folders. You can still have a folder for each child and have photos with both of them together in each folder. Then you can make another folder for events like Christmas and put another copy in this folder. It's a life saver! You can go my consultant's site at http://www.mycmsite.com/sites/michellekipp if you're interested. J.

Lots of folders.
When you open mypics there is a folder for each year.
You open 2010 folder you will see a folder for each month.
Most months folders only have an array of pics. But if there is a special event in that month it may have a few folders too (Disneyland, zoo trip, wedding, etc)
I no longer have folders for each kid as there are so many of both. I find it easy to do my scrap booking with everything organized chronologically, not by topic.

I'm telling you what my husband did, cause I was at a loss too. With our first, we have a folder for him, and Month 1, 2, etc. Now with 2, we had to do it by year and month. We sometimes have it by event, but those are usually pics from others that we add to our folders.

I also have 2 kids and we love to take pictures. I just keep my pictures by how they are downloaded - which is the date they were taken - and group them by year. That is the easiest way for me to retrieve them later.

Digital photography wasn't arround when my kids were little. I organize by dates and events. For example we went to Cape Cod last October and we took pictures for Christmas. My folders would be labeled "2010-10 Cape Cod" and "2010-12 Christmas". I also think it would be a good idea to keep a folder for each child we just a few special pictures (these would be duplicates of the ones you have in other files).

i divide them into the months that they were taken in, and after 6 months, i create a year folder, then put them in there. if it is a special event like a trip or birthday or Christmas, it gets it's own folder put into the month that it occurred.then i back them up on an external hard drive and on discs. (i had a hard drive crash on me once and i dint have a back up, and then i had some one steal a tub of scrap booking supplies that just happened to have every single photo i had of my daughter under the age of 5 and my son under the age of 2, and and my full scrapbook, and the one that was half finished.)

I do mine in folders by year... but my grandma has a good system. She makes copies... so she will have a year folder, but then she also has a folder for each kid. Any picture that has that kid in it will be in that folder. If there are three kids in one picture, then a copy of that picture will be in each folder. It does take up quite a bit of space, but she has memory cards for each kid, so she is able to do it. That way, when she is looking for pictures it's easier for her to find what she wants. :) (she has a card for each of her kids... if they have kids (obviously my dad does...) then they are listed in their own folder within the folder... so my dad's folder has all of his pics in it, then extra folders that have pics of the grandkids...)

I just keep them in folders for each year, then divide that up into each date. If it's a big event like Xmas or a trip to the Zoo or Disneyland I will add that next to the date. I have 3 kids, I could never divide them into who's who!

I did the same as you at first, but once the second kid came along, it got too hard to keep them separate! I now organize my pictures by date. So I make folders for every 3 months, and put the pictures in there. That way, I don't have way too many pictures in each folder, but if I want to look at pictures from a certain event, I just have to know when it happened. Works perfectly for me.

I organize my pictures by year then month - so for 2010 I have the "2010" folder with 12 sub folders for each month. I name my pictures using a date format - for example a picture taken Christmas day would be named 122510-001 - the next picture would be 122510-002 and so on. Windows also allows you to tag a photo - highlight the photo you're working with, at the bottom of the window you should see a box that has that photo's information - there is a tag feature there. I tag the photo with the name of the person in the picture and if it was a special event or activity I tag that as well. For example we had cheerleading this summer, so I have pictures tagged with "Cay" and "Cheerleading" - this eliminates the need to keep duplicate pictures (at least for me) - I already have more than 70 gb of photos, keeping duplicates is not an option for me...
