Help! Food Poisoning

Ladies I ate a piece of fish on Saturday that had been in the fridge too long. It made me very sick. I am certain it was the fish because I fed it to one of my dogs as well. Poor dog has been sick right along with me. No one else in my household, including the other dog, ate the fish and none of them have been ill. Thinking I was over the worst, I ate almost normally yesterday. This was another mistake. I was up five or six times during the night visiting the bathroom. If any one has been through this they know how awful it makes you feel. I need to know what types of food to avoid so that I won’t set off my distressed system again. No need to mention fish, it will be a long time before I can eat a piece of cod again. If there are any foods that you ate that made you feel better I would so like to know. How long did you have to be on a special diet before you could eat normally without distress? Thanks for your help, I could really use it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I was much more careful for the next few days in choosing my food. Also I went for a treatment with my acupuncturist. She also gave me herbs. I am feeling much better now!

Try jello, that's easy on the system and the sugar will give you some energy. Gatorade type drinks help too. Cook some white rice in chicken broth or cream of chicken soup. Chicken digests easily, the rice will absorb any bacteria left in your system, and will help it pass through.

Hope you feel better soon!

Also a fan of the BRAT diet. Stay away from dairy, unless you enjoy the potty hang out. Watch out for other foods full of fiber for obvious reasons (juices too). I was told carrots help the potty trips decrease. Hope you feel better soon.

Avoid dairy for a few days, I have been in the same position (unfortunately a few times). Diary is very hard for your stomach to process at this time of agitation. Take it slow, small portions of rice and bread will help absorb the stomach acid. Best of luck. I am so sorry this happened to you.

Food poison lasts for 3 - 10 days, most often only three. I had it for all ten!

If you are able to eat at all, be sure it is bland and gradually work into your regular diet.

I wasn't able to hold anything down and had to go to the ER for an IV at the end of day three.

Good luck!

In no particular order:

- campbells chicken noodle soup...cook it and then strain out the noodles and chicken and just the broth...and then later, when you're feeling better) the whole soup. The nutrients just seem to soak into you.

- Toast with jam (gross...but the only thing I've ever found that tastes about the same going up or down)

- McDonalds. WITHOUT fries. No potato products. But their hamburgers are essentially pre-digested for you.

- Popsicles

- An IV drip, and a Compazine (Prochlorperazine) ear patch (anti-nausea)

The last one is my personal favorite. Don't wait until you are delirious before going to the hospital. And, make sure someone drives you.
