Looking for Advice for Sick 3 1/2 Year Old Daughter

Hi Mamasource Moms!
I have a daughter who has been throwing up off/on since Sunday. She has a runny nose and the drainage (into her tummy) is making her sick. I am wondering if anyone has any great tips about what to feed her. Crackers have worked and then later she has gotten sick again on them. She kept soup down yesterday but threw up last night after a sugar free popsicle. She is at the point where she wants to eat but I am a bit lost where to go from here. Yes... I will also call the doctor for their advice. : )

What can I do next?

Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Very small amounts to start with. Chicken noodle soup or the broth is fine...depending on whether or not she can keep it down. Chicken with stars, etc. Gatorade, pedialyte, popcicles, saltines, and 7-up or Sprite. No water for now. Just pick and choose. Even dry cheerios will work, if she can handle them. When her appetite starts increasing...mashed potatoes with only salt and pepper for seasoning.

You can use the Gerber rice cereal and mix in the applesauce or bananas, if she still likes it. Just work it slowly into her system.

I think they call it the "BRAT" diet...Bread, Rice, Applesauce, & Toast. My son loved chicken noodle soup when he was sick when he had a stomach virus. You could then graduate to soup and possibly a grilled cheese. If she can't hold that "diet" down, I would suggest taking her to the doctor. Good luck, and I hope she feels better!!

When I was throwing up really bad the doc told me not to drink water b/c it will induce vomiting. He said drink the broth out of chicken noodle soup and then try gatorade if I could handle the soup. Then add in crakcers and toast and go from there. I hope your litte one is well soon. It sounds like the stomach virus my hubby and I had awhile back and it lasted about 2 weeks and our appitite wasnt back to noraml for almost a month so dont worry if she wont eat much for a good while or say her tummy is hurting/cramping b/c my sure was. Good Luck!

Maybe pedialyte just in case she is dehydrated from being sick... and the BRAT diet is good too.

My father works in emergency medicine and has always told me that if someone is throwing up the best thing to do is to not feed them for 24 hours... I know it's hard because they will get hungry but it allows time for the body to rid itself of whatever is causing the vomitting... he recommends getting Gatorade (any flavor but red) and give your child small sips every 15-20 minutes to keep them hydrated... the following day you should be able to put them on the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) and hopefully that will help. Another thought is to look at what is coming up and see if there's a lot of phlegm because if your child has a runny nose, chances are it's also dripping into her stomach... we have bad allergies in this house and that's the main cause for my kids throwing up if I didn't catch the runny nose quick enough... good luck!

If she's vomiting that much, it's likely a stomach virus. Concentrate on liquids first. After she vomits, wait 10 minutes and give her an ounce or two of liquid (pedialyte, gatorade). Wait 10 min. If she keeps it down, give her a couple more ounces. After she can keep down clear liquids for a couple hours, go to the BRAT diet. Avoid dairy and juice.

I was watching Oprah yesterday and the Dr that she has that comes and talks about the digestive system said chicken soup and rice. I never watch Oprah, and that sounds like such a cliche, but maybe it was just so I could pass this info on to you. :)

Also, my doctor has told me in the past to pick up Emetrol. This stuff works immediately on nausea. It's great and I am never without a bottle in the house.

Good luck!!!

I totally agree on the BRAT diet but my son's physician suggested sweet potatoes as well and also stated to wait 1 hr before you give her ANYTHING to drink(pedialyte, water) or eat.

Good Luck and does sound like a virus my younger son has been going through this for the past 2 weeks.
