Can anyone suggest a good product to heal scars? I recently had an external fixator removed from my leg, and now I have 20 large holes! They are healing well, but I'd like to minimize the scars if I can. TIA

What can I do next?

Mederma.

It's not that expensive - and a $12 tube should last a couple of months. I used it on my son's face after he lost a fight with a rose bush - he had one particularly nasty gash down his left cheek and my husband called him scarface for 6 months, and toward the end people wanted to know what he was talking about - there was no scar left.

My other son got two gashes in his chest from the staples on a friend's couch. As an experiment, I used mederma on one - he only has one scar (from the non mederma site). I feel guilty now, so I'm using mederma on that one.

Melaleuca oil is very healing - it heals from the inside out...renew lotion will help get rid of wrinkles too.

Good luck!!

I have a hysterectomy scar from 2001 and I used vitamin E oil faithfully and you can hardly tell there is a scar.

On June 23 I had a limpoma removed near my hipbone which will be visible with bikini and I am using the vitamin E oil faithfully. So far all looks great.

I am a believer in the Vitamin E oil. I got it from the pharmacist behind the counter, non RX.

good luck.

Vitamin E oil is inexpensive (Wal-Mart carries it -- just ask in the pharmacy where it is in the over the counter area).

If you want something else (a little more costly though), Maderma cream (also over the counter).

Maderma absolutely yes 100% in agreement. We had to use it on my son after a surgery, and it's the best! Also, some doctors fail to tell you that you need to keep it out of the sun for a year. It doesn't mean you have to hide out, but either cover up the scar area with a bandaid or clothing or use sunscreen constantly reapplying when out in the sun. Maderma now makes some with SPF in it.

I used Vitamin E oil too. However I also used Mederma and it is over the counter. Mederma is very expensive, however it will help heal the scar and make it look like the scar was never there. I've used it in several places and it is awesome. I've had 3 surgeries on my right arm and my Dr. recommended Mederma to me. The Vitamin E oil helped with the dryness and to help the skin be smooth. I've used Mederma in addtion to Vitamin E oil and using both of them has been great. My scars are less noticeable. I highly recommend both of them! Good luck

I "second" the vitamin E oil. However, my mom told me when she had surgery, the doctor told her specifically to check at CVS (I believe in the make-up section) for Vitamin E gel. It is even richer than the oil. It's been working well for her. Just thought I'd share . . .

My son had a cleft lip and Palate surgery and Our craniofacial surgeon recommended HIGH IU vitamin E oil and we used it for over a year (because of the severeness of the scar and scar tissue surrounding the gum and lip) and his scar is beautiful you hardly notice its there...

for proof, visit www.texascleftconnections.org (our supprt group for cleft issues) and see Preston's photos both before and after. so make sure if you do use vitamin E oil that you use the Highest IU you can find (that is the concentration of Pure Vitamin E oil verses other oils they add to mix it with)the higher IU the better. You can also alternate with the mederma if you want that way you get both product benifits.

Also as others have said it is very important to use SPF 35-50 on the scar ALL THE TIME for at least 1 year minimum, to prevent sun damage to the healing skin.

Hope that helps!
